Chapter 694 Four Pillars: Partial Success
Seeing as Vaughn had not become discouraged by the sudden failure of what he had termed his final experiment, it went without saying that Valyr followed the man wherever he went.
With that, he watched the man go through all of the documents that had piled up throughout the experiment, staring at a few of them before scribbling some notes on a new piece of paper.
After that, Vaughn read through the notes he had written before proceeding to test the ideas on those notes, utilizing the myriad number of instruments within the place to concoct yet another one of those test tubes.
For quite some time, Valyr watched Vaughn go through all of the things that would've been normally been skipped by the memories with rapt attention.
However, as he noticed that the memory continued running even though the man was doing something mundane, the young man began to have doubts.
'Wait… would I be forced to watch through all of these experiments in detail?' thought Valyr to himself, feeling a hint of dread just from the idea alone.
In the end, he decided to watch everything without missing a single detail, not caring anymore if he had to sit through a ton of mundane stuff for hours on end.
Then again, it did not take long for the answer to his previous problem to appear before him, with the memory skipping forward after the second attempt at the final experiment had been finished.
Though Vaughn had made more progress in transforming the primitive humanoid in something more human-like, the sample eventually disintegrated as well, exploding into chunks of flesh and meat.
And so, Valyr witnessed all of the attempts Vaughn made in order to transform the primitive humanoid into a human, all of which were still under the final experiment he had mentioned.
Compared to the previous memories he had gone through so far, Valyr felt that this part of the memory was the longest so far, considering how it recorded a majority of what had transpired in Vaughn's experiments.
Nevertheless, that also meant that he learned a lot regarding the characteristics of primitive humanoids due to how they were the main subjects of the experiment.
Of course, there were times where Vaughn had attempted to use his concoctions on the aberrations, allowing the young man to learn more about them as well.
But just as how most of the primitive humanoids had ended up after drinking the concoctions, all of the aberrations Vaughn tested on also disintegrated with time, with most of them turning into a puddle of putrid flesh.
However, if Valyr had to think of one more thing that he learned the most from witnessing this lengthy memory…
It would be Vaughn's nature.
From how he methodically went over every single step he did in the transformation process, to writing out even the barest difference in between experiments on paper, Valyr now had an idea as to why Vaughn had become the last leader of humanity.
If not for his tenacity and his unyielding resolve, then it would be the fact that he did not hesitate to traverse the unknown to achieve his goals.
In fact, it was at the very moment he had taken on a different approach on transforming the primitive humanoids did progress continue to appear again.
Then, building on top of what he had discovered, each succeeding attempt allowing him to get closer and closer to what seemed to be the success he was hoping for.
Watching how frequent Vaughn experimented his concoctions on the primitive humanoids with holes in their hearts, Valyr wryly smiled.
'Well, I guess that answers where most of the primitive humanoids of that type went.'
…
"Aria, what attempt are we on at the moment?"
"This would be the 314th attempt on turning the final experiment's status to Success, Master."
"Got it." Reading through the many notes and addenda he had written down to get to his current point, Vaughn briefly stared off into the distance before picking up the test tubes containing the culmination of his attempts so far.
"Let's hope this attempt is the one that turns out successful, Aria."
Making sure that he had picked up the nine test tubes containing the fluids he had carefully concocted, it was only then did Vaughn head to where the primitive humanoids were stored, taking in a deep breath in the process.
"May the heavens finally show me mercy this time around." Letting out a long and drawn-out sigh as he looked at the table before him, Vaughn commanded his assistant to bring a sample over.
In response, a series of robotic arms came down from the ceiling and retrieved one of the few remaining primitive humanoids stored in the large glass tubes.
Seeing that he could only afford to attempt the experiment a few more times before having to create primitive humanoids again, Vaughn let out a wry chuckle as he gazed at the primitive humanoid before him.
'I really hope the heavens are on my side.'
Calming his slightly tense nerves with a simple breathing exercise, Vaughn started yet another attempt on the primitive humanoid, utilizing the first two test tubes to wake the primitive humanoid up.
Of course, having gone through hundreds of attempts at this point, it did not take long for the robotic arms to restrain the primitive humanoid before it can move about, allowing the man to continue dumping the contents of the test tubes into the primitive humanoid's mouth.
The third test tube…
The fourth test tube…
With each test tube he emptied out, the primitive humanoid's state gradually turned more and more human, causing a faint trace of excitement to appear on Vaughn's face.
However, rather than let his emotions get the better of him, Vaughn instead refocused his attention towards the attempt, knowing that even a single misstep would cause his efforts so far to turn into nothing.
And so, he proceeded to empty more test tubes.
The seventh test tube…
The eighth test tube…
By the time only the ninth and final test tube remained, the primitive humanoid on the table had already lost the hole that covered a great portion of its chest.
On top of that, it stared at Vaughn with an expectant gaze that contained traces of intelligence, making it seem as if the being had already become the being the man wanted it to become in the first place.
Though, as far as Vaughn knew, only after emptying out the final test tube would the being be considered a true success.
Glug… glug…
Slowly tipping the test tube over the being's mouth, Vaughn stepped back as he watched the fluid's properties take effect on the being.
Rumble…
Hearing the rumble faintly resound from the being's body once more, the man kept his eyes peeled, not wanting to miss even a single detail of what was going on.
Then, after seeing that the being's body was still intact, only then did Vaughn become ecstatic.
"Finally…! It's a success!"
"Grraaaaahhhhh!!!"
However, just as the man was about to celebrate the fact that his experiment had eventually become successful, the being on the table began to thrash about.
"Aaaaagrrraaaggghhh!!!"
Screaming itself hoarse as the being flailed its body on the table with no regard, Vaughn watched the scene unfold with wide eyes, wondering in slight confusion as to what was going on.
Then again, it did not take long for reality to set in, staring at the scene before him with a look of understanding as he wryly smiled.
"Well, I've done all I could." Vaughn let out a faint sigh, sending out a series of commands to his assistant soon after.
"At least it's a step in the right direction."
"…"
"Aria, set the final experiment's status to Partial Success."
"…"
"Understood, Master."
