Lin Nuan was in the middle of having her breakfast when her phone rang. It was Miss Xia.
She put her cup of milk back on the table, wiped her mouth with her napkin, and answered the call. “Hi, Miss Xia.”
“Mama!” It was Tuan Tuan’s babyish voice on the other end of the line.
Shocked, Lin Nuan did a double take at her phone. It was indeed Miss Xia’s number.
“Tuan Tuan?”
At that moment, Miss Xia took over the phone. “The child is now at my office. Come pick him up.”
There was no time for further questions. Lin Nuan hung up, wore her shoes hurriedly, and rushed out of the house.
The chauffeur, who was cleaning the car in the patio, saw Lin Nuan coming out of the house. He smiled and asked, “Madam, do you need the car? Sir wanted me to wait for you here, and I am at your service.”
Tuan Tuan was at the broadcast building, Bai Xiaonian would be occupied at that hour, and Miss Xia would be just as busy. Lin Nuan was in a hurry and thus didn’t decline the offer. She nodded and thanked him for the trouble before getting into the car and requesting the chauffeur send her to the broadcast building.
When Lin Nuan got out of the car, Tuan Tuan was already waiting at the entrance of the building. Fu Huai’an was there as well and behind him was the black Bentley.
Tuan Tuan was carrying a backpack with a cartoon car design. He looked up at Fu Huai’an without a word, his fair and chubby face tensed. He rubbed his sore and swollen eyes with his pudgy hands, and his eyes were as red as that of a rabbit.
Fu Huai’an wore a dark blue leather suit. The vested three-piece suit was exquisite and hung well on his tall and slender frame, giving him an air of sophisticated elegance.
His shirt collar was unbuttoned, his side profile was prominent, and he stood by the car with his hands crossed. He lowered his head, his penetrating gaze on little Tuan Tuan who was standing in front of him. He spoke in a lowered voice, not in an admonishing manner but he was awe-inspiring and thus naturally intimidating.
The good-looking father and son pair attracted passersby, who couldn’t help but took a second look. They felt sorry for Tuan Tuan as his father looked too solemn.
Lin Nuan alighted from the car, still holding her phone, unsure if she should go over.
Knowing that Tuan Tuan was the baby who had gone through life and death with her and that he was Sister Xiangsi’s son, Lin Nuan’s feelings towards Tuan Tuan had evolved from the initial sympathy and heartache to something different.
She wanted to go over to hug Tuan Tuan, but the unhappy memory of the previous day’s incident with Fu Huai’an deterred her from going.
Fu Huai’an said something and Tuan Tuan nodded. Fu Huai’an opened the rear door of the car and held Tuan Tuan’s little hand.
A teary-eyed Tuan Tuan turned back to look at the building and immediately caught sight of Lin Nuan standing in the distance.
Tuan Tuan’s teary red eyes lit up, and he shouted “Mama”. He freed himself from Fu Huai’an’s grasp and ran towards Lin Nuan.
Fu Huai’an heard him and turned his head, his piercing gaze looking towards Lin Nuan’s direction.
Their eyes met. Lin Nuan recalled Fu Huai’an’s aloof manner towards her the day before, and once again, she could feel a slight pain in her palms.
The broadcast building’s door separated Lin Nuan and Tuan Tuan, and he was sprinting towards her. It was the morning peak hour, and many cars were turning into the building.
She subconsciously ran towards Tuan Tuan, afraid that he might be hit by a passing car.
The small boy sped towards Lin Nuan and looked at her with big black, teary eyes. He called “Mama” again and reached out his arms, wanting her to carry him.
The night before, Tuan Tuan had a nightmare. He dreamt that Mama had abandoned him and Papa. He woke up crying and wanted to look for Mama. Papa wasn’t around, and so he had sneaked out by himself to find Mama.
