Chapter 71-1
Trust
When Song Yuhang entered the room, the doctor had just left. She hurriedly ran to the bedside, trembling, to touch her pale face.
Lin Yan lay silently, her complexion as pale as paper. She had become even thinner, her neck excessively slender and fair, with faintly visible blue veins.
A gauze bandage was wrapped around her shoulder, and there was an intravenous needle inserted on the back of her hand. The electrodes on her chest were covered with stickers that monitored her basic vital signs.
If it weren’t for the mist rising from the oxygen mask and the numbers still flickering on the life monitor, she would almost have believed that this person was about to leave her.
Song Yuhang pressed her forehead against Lin Yan’s, kneeling on the ground, feeling her faint breath. The nasal acidity she could no longer restrain surged up once again.
She had always been someone who bled but didn’t shed tears, yet in front of Lin Yan, she exposed her weakness time and time again.
Song Yuhang wiped her face, wanting to leave, but she noticed a gentle tremor in Lin Yan’s eyelashes.
Song Yuhang was both nervous and joyful, not daring to take a breath. “Lin Yan, Lin Yan…”
She called softly, tightly gripping her hand. She didn’t expect her to wake up, but if her body reacted, would it also mean that she could sense everything she was doing and saying now?
Lin Yan felt like she had been trapped in a long dream, her body sinking in quicksand. She couldn’t break free no matter how hard she struggled.
It wasn’t until a familiar voice broke through the chaos, guiding her towards the light.
Lin Yan desperately held onto that thread of warmth and swam upstream.
Song Yuhang watched as she tightly grasped her fingers, on the verge of tears of joy.
“Lin Yan…” Once again, she pressed her forehead against hers, sighing as she called out her name.
Lin Yan slowly opened her eyes, realizing… it wasn’t a dream after all.
She blinked her eyes a few times, looking at the familiar face, and without warning, tears began to flow.
Song Yuhang couldn’t bear to see her cry. She felt that when she cried, even the toughest steel turned into something tender, and every fiber of her being ached.
“Don’t… don’t cry… What’s wrong… Lin Yan… Don’t cry… Don’t cry…” She fumbled to wipe away her tears, a bit impatient like a rascal.
Lin Yan wanted to smile, but could only manage a weak pout as she buried her head in Song Yuhang’s shoulder.
Song Yuhang turned to the side and embraced her tightly. “It’s okay… It’s okay… You’re awake, that’s all that matters… You’re awake, it’ll get better… It’ll get better.”
She gently patted her, sometimes with a pause in between. Her voice was soft as she kissed her forehead, and when she felt the warm tears fall into the hollow of her neck, her own eyes welled up.
She almost wanted to take her away immediately, never to be separated again.
Song Yuhang gritted her teeth, barely restraining the impulse surging up from the depths of her blood.
“What you went through fourteen years ago, I don’t mind letting you experience it again.”
But after the fleeting joy of their reunion, Lin Yan thought of Lin Youyuan’s words, and a chilling sensation ran through her entire body.
Trembling lips, she moved away from her embrace, struggling to raise her hand and push her shoulders, shaking her head, urging her to leave.
Song Yuhang shook her head as well, once again rushing forward to hold her tightly. “I won’t leave, I won’t leave. I’ve said it, you can hit me, scold me, I won’t leave. Only death can take me away from your side.”
Lin Yan became agitated, breathing heavily, and mist rose from the oxygen mask. Her eyes were red, filled with a fierce and cruel gaze.
She couldn’t speak, but she kept pushing her away, struggling. The fabric rubbed against the gauze on her shoulder, causing it to bleed again. The catheter on the back of her hand was pulled loose, slowly allowing blood to flow back.
In an instant, Song Yuhang’s eyes turned red, and she roared in a low voice, forcefully holding her down. “Don’t move!”
The gaze was both fierce and ruthless, as if it wanted to devour her.
Lin Yan was taken aback, not yet fully comprehending the situation. Before she could react, the tension on her face eased, and Song Yuhang lifted her oxygen mask.
Her pupils contracted, and her face slowly enlarged.
“Uh…”
If the last time in the abandoned hospital was consensual, then this time it was Song Yuhang unilaterally dominating and punishing her.
It was too aggressive and invasive.
Lin Yan was completely powerless to resist.
She was at a disadvantage.
She exerted all her strength and finally managed to find an opening, biting down fiercely.
Song Yuhang felt the pain but still didn’t let go of her, until she was almost unable to breathe. Only then did Song Yuhang release her head and step back.
Both of them were breathing heavily, especially Lin Yan. The corners of her eyes turned red, and her eyes were filled with watery shimmer. She wanted to kill her.
The pale face was now flushed, especially the lips, which were made alluring and dripping with beauty by her.
Song Yuhang was satisfied and used the back of her hand to wipe away the water stains from the corners of her lips, also taking the opportunity to clean up whatever was lingering there.
Lin Yan was filled with both shame and anger, but she held her breath and broke through her gritted teeth, uttering, “I… will… kill… you.”
Song Yuhang chuckled. She raised her hand, and Lin Yan instinctively closed her eyes and turned her head, her body tensed up.
“Why hide? It’s just covering yourself with a blanket.”
She tucked the blanket for her and lowered her hand that was receiving the transfusion.
“…” If she wasn’t currently powerless, with medical devices attached to her body, Lin Yan would have jumped up and punched this dog in the face.
“Are you angry?” Song Yuhang knew well the true essence of taking advantage and acting cute. She gently lifted her face, making her look at her.
Lin Yan held her breath and stubbornly refused to look at her.
Song Yuhang chuckled, her gaze once again falling on her lips, savoring the lingering sensation that the connection of their lips had brought her.
In that instant, it felt as if their souls were resonating.
The police officer’s eyes darkened slightly, knowing that she shouldn’t tease her like this. But unable to resist, she pressed her fingertips against her lips, caressing them gently.
“I heard it all.”
Lin Yan trembled all over. She wanted to slap away her hand, but she couldn’t forget her words. By the time she regained her senses, Song Yuhang had already pressed her hand down as well, firmly restraining her.
Lin Yan gnashed her teeth. “If you heard it, then why don’t you leave?”
“What will you do if I leave?” Song Yuhang sighed, watching her lips regain their color under her touch, very satisfied.
“When you were unconscious, I came every day. Someone, on the other hand, would cry even while sleeping.”
Lin Yan remembered the button she found in the palm of her hand, as well as the little things she discovered by her pillow later on.
Each time, she would have the butler secretly hide them.
Lin Yan’s heart warmed, but her words were still unforgiving. “It’s none of your damn business. Crying over cats, dogs, or whatever has nothing to do with you.”
“Oh, then why didn’t you delete my fingerprints? Did you intentionally leave them behind for me to trespass in your home, for secret rendezvous?”
She emphasized the second half of her sentence.
Lin Yan’s face instantly turned red. She opened her mouth and bit down, her teeth grinding against her bones, creating a strangely delightful sensation.
She wanted revenge, but Song Yuhang’s intentions were not as simple as that.
She constantly challenged her limits, not even sparing her when she was seriously ill.
The recent incident was almost causing her to lose control. Her once proud self-control was completely meaningless in front of Lin Yan.
Does she really understand what this means?
Lin Yan understands, of course she does. It’s intentional.
Song Yuhang’s lungs were about to explode with anger. Her Adam’s apple rolled up and down, and he muttered under his breath, “Fuck.”
She almost rudely took back the initiative.
Lin Yan’s eyes finally regained some brilliance, and a satisfied curve formed at the corner of her lips. She slightly raised her chin and looked at her.
Song Yuhang ground her teeth. “Just you wait. Once you’re better, you’re done for.”
“Who says someone will die for sure?”
Lin Yan refused to show weakness, and Song Yuhang couldn’t be bothered to argue with her. She poured a glass of warm water from the thermos on the bedside table to soothe her throat.
She gently shook the bed, making her more comfortable.
Song Yuhang held the cup for her, watching as she took small sips. Then she spoke, “Lin Yan, do you trust me?”
Lin Yan’s body tensed up, and she turned her face away, indicating that she didn’t want to drink anymore.
Song Yuhang placed the cup on the table and then returned to cradle her face in her hands.
Their eyes met, and in each other’s pupils, they saw reflections of themselves.
“My name is Song Yuhang, not Chen Chunan…” If it weren’t for the circumstances, she wouldn’t want to mention that name again, reopening the wound that had already scabbed over, causing it to bleed once more.
Lin Yan trembled her lips, avoiding eye contact, her eyes shimmering with tears.
Song Yuhang didn’t let go. She continued to cradle her face, urging her to look at her.
“I have the ability to protect myself. I don’t need you to be good to me. You just need to take care of yourself and recover as soon as possible. Leave the rest to me. I will take you out, I promise.”
They said it was for her recovery, but no one else was allowed near her. They confiscated her phone, cutting off all contact with the outside world. In reality, it was just a form of soft confinement.
Whenever she thought about it, Song Yuhang couldn’t muster any positive feelings towards him, despite being her supposed father.
Even though he was Lin Yan’s father.
Seeing Lin Yan’s silence, she forced a light smile and gently rubbed her face.
“You listen to me, don’t overthink it. Just focus on recovering. The day you can walk again will be the day I take you out.”
“I…” Lin Yan wasn’t worried about that. She was about to speak, but Song Yuhang cut her off.
“I know you’re worried about me. You’ve crossed paths with me before. Do you think a few small-time thugs can get close to me? I have the ability to protect myself, and I can protect you too. Besides, even though your father holds a high position and has connections in both politics and business, I am, after all, a cadre at the municipal public security bureau’s official level. He can’t find any faults with me openly, and in secret, he won’t even have the opportunity to lay a hand on me. On the contrary, what do businesspeople fear the most? Do you know?”
Police, urban management, public security, patrols, fire inspections… They would come for inspections every other day, causing endless annoyance.
Lin Yan gritted her teeth. “Have you become smarter? Weren’t you the most disdainful of dealing with these bureaucratic hassles before?”
Lin Yan, being herself, not only caught onto that point, but also keenly grasped another important point in her words.
“Why did you suddenly mention a half-level position?”
Song Yuhang was taken aback, and the smile on her face faded, but she concealed it well, not letting Lin Yan notice anything amiss.
It wasn’t the right time to tell her about Zhang Jinhai’s sacrifice. After all, it was Lin Yan who insisted they go first, and Song Yuhang was afraid she would feel guilty.
“Isn’t this a case solved, a meritorious achievement? The Technical Investigation Team received a third-class merit, and you’re included. You’re even recognized as an outstanding individual. I’ll bring you the medal later.”
“Forget it. I don’t want it.”
Behind each and every medal of merit were countless blood and tears, along with lives that could never be saved again.
Song Yuhang looked at her despondently and lowered the bed again, kissing her forehead. It was time for her to leave and get some rest.
Lin Yan’s fingers clung to her clothes.
Song Yuhang chuckled, rarely witnessing her display a bit of a feminine temperament. She leaned down slightly and tenderly stayed with her for a while.
“Alright, it’s time for you to sleep.”
Lin Yan bit her lip tightly. “You…”
“I will come again, and I will be careful about my safety.”
Song Yuhang knew what she wanted to say and took the initiative to calm her emotions, tucking her in.
“Give me your hand.”
Song Yuhang didn’t understand her intentions but obediently extended her hand.
Lin Yan glanced around. She didn’t know if this room was equipped with surveillance cameras or listening devices. Therefore, she chose the most secure method.
With each stroke, she wrote a series of numbers in the palm of her hand.
Lin Yan closed her hand, enclosing it. “Have you remembered it?”
Song Yuhang nodded and held her hand with her other hand, giving her a reassuring squeeze.
“Don’t worry.”
“If you encounter danger or need help, go find him. He will assist you.”
Song Yuhang knew that this person was not the Butler Lin, not Lin Ge, not anyone from the Lin family. Instead, he was her trusted confidant.
What Lin Yan handed over was unconditional trust.
A warm current surged in Song Yuhang’s chest, and she embraced the person in her arms once again. She really couldn’t bear to leave her even for a single second. She kissed her cheek and nuzzled against her.
The fluffy hair draped over her face and neck, resembling a certain large canid animalwolf.
Lin Yan chuckled and pushed her away voluntarily. “Go quickly.”
Reluctantly, Song Yuhang stood up. “See you tomorrow.”
Lin Yan nodded. “Yes, see you tomorrow.”
