Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Lilia Egoven
The next day, Lake had awoken from his bed after hearing his doorbell ring, completely unaware that he had become famous overnight.
After groggily getting up, Lake lazily stretched as he tried to familiarize himself with his body. After going through synchronization, Lake felt that his body had become unfamiliar but at the same time, it felt completely natural.
At that moment the doorbell rang another time.
Lake felt a little annoyed that someone was knocking on his front door this early in the morning.
Walking up to the front door, Lake heard the doorbell ring another time, causing him to speak in a slightly annoyed tone as he opened the door.
"Can you please stop ringing the doorbell-"
However, before Lake could finish speaking, he suddenly felt someone wrap their arms around him as he felt a soft sensation pressed against his chest. This soft sensation felt extremely familiar to him causing him to look down at the slender figure below.
The person that was currently pressing her chest against Lake was a pretty woman who looked to be in her early 20s. She had long black hair and wore a simple black office lady outfit that helped to showcase her explosive figure. Her fair arms wrapped around Lake as her two mounds pressed against his chest.
Normally Lake would have been extremely elated if a beauty were to jump into his arms first thing in the morning. However, after Lake saw the face that was currently rubbing against his chest, all of his wishful thinking disappeared.
"What are you doing here, sis?"
Hearing Lake's words, the woman separated herself from Lake before frowning deeply with folded arms.
"What's this? Your one and only big sis came all the way from another city to visit her pitiful little brother who lives all alone in this cramped and run down apartment complex and this is the response she receives?"
Seeing that she was getting angry, Lake sighed as he spoke in both a sarcastic and fawning tone, "Welcome back, sis! Your oh so dear little brother missed you dearly, and is deeply touched to see you take the time out of your extremely busy schedule to visit me."
Hearing Lake's reply, the woman rolled her eyes as she walked into the house like it was her own.
This woman was Lilia Egoven, Lake's older sister.
Seeing her casual behavior, Lake shook his head before closing the door and followed her inside.
Lilia had sat down on Lake's bed as she looked around the small room.
"This place certainly brings back memories."
"You've only been gone six months, yet you talk like you haven't visited in years." Lake said as he took a seat on the only chair in the room.
"Hmph, I see you've gotten ruder during these last six months."
Lake shrugged in response to her words.
At this point Lilia looked over at Lake as if she had noticed something.
"You got a haircut?" She said in a slightly surprised voice.
"Hmm? Oh, I got it cut a few weeks ago."
"That's surprising. Last I remember you were horrible at cutting your hair. Didn't you decide to grow it out instead?"
"Yeah I did, but a friend said it annoyed her, so she took me to get it cut." Lake said casually, however, Lilia was quick to note the details as she smiled mischievously.
"She? This friend of yours must be really close to be willing to go out of her way to drag you to get a haircut."
Hearing her words, Lake knew that he had messed up. Seeing the way she was smiling at him, Lake knew she wouldn't let up anytime soon. For now he decided to change the topic.
"I guess. What about you? How's work?"
Noticing his attempt, Lilia smirked but decided to play along for now.
"It's going well. I recently got promoted, that's why I was allowed to come back and visit so soon."
"You got promoted, congratulations!" Lake was slightly surprised to hear of her promotion but it was within expectation as every time she came back in the past, she had been promoted.
From what Lake knows, his sister worked in the logistics department of the Golden Phoenix Guild. From research Lake did a long time ago he knew that Golden Phoenix was an impressive guild that ranked in the top twenty in the country.
"What about you? If I remember correctly, your exams were yesterday. I didn't get the chance to check the results last night as I was still on the plane coming here."
"It was alright. I managed to pass the exam. I'll start attending the academy in three months from now."
Hearing Lake's words, Lilia let out a sigh filled with mixed emotions. On one side, she was happy that her brother had managed to pass the exam as it meant he had a guaranteed future as a hunter. However, it was because of this that she was also filled with worry. She worked in a guild and interacted with hunters every now and then, and she knew how dangerous the job could be.
When she had first heard that Lake wanted to be a hunter a year ago, she was heavily against the idea of it as she didn't want to see her brother do such a dangerous job. However, she knew that this was Lake's decision and didn't want to get in his way.
Looking at Lake, Lilia smiled as she spoke, "Mom would definitely be proud of you."
Hearing her words, Lake shook a little as old memories came flooding in. The "mom" Lilia was referring to wasn't actually their real mother.
From what Lake knew, his parents had abandoned him when he was born and he had been taken in by a small orphanage. The director there was kind and had treated everyone like her children, that's why most of the children of the orphanage, along with Lilia and Lake called her "mom".
Back when Lake was in the orphanage, Lake and Lilia were very close to the orphanage director and were probably the closest to her among all the children. However, the good times didn't last long.
By the time Lake turned twelve, Lilia was already an adult and had left the orphanage to find work. Lake was still in the orphanage and had spent the next few months with the company of the director and the other children.
However, one day the orphanage was mysteriously closed down for unknown reasons and the director had also vanished. Lake had still remembered playing with the director the day before it happened so he found it all to be strange.
At the time Lake's mind was filled with various questions.
What happened? Why had the director suddenly disappeared? What was going to happen to him and the rest of the children?
After a while Lake found out that the children in the orphanage were going to be moved to another location. At the time Lake felt extremely sad as the other children were either crying or had their heads lowered in depression.
Lake was like them as he kept his head lowered as thoughts of abandonment filled his mind.
It was then that Lilia had returned to the orphanage. She had directly taken in Lake and became his legal guardian.
Lake didn't quite understand what was going on and could only ask Lilia what was happening.
"Where did mom go? Did she abandon us?" Back then, those were the only things he could think of.
At the time Lilia didn't respond as she just stared at Lake with a sad expression.
It wasn't until three years later when Lake had turned fifteen that Lilia had taken him to a grave. It was here where Lake had found out what had happened back then as he stared at the director's name that he could never forget carved into the tombstone.
Remembering that incident, Lake let out a sigh as he released a small smile.
"I'm sure she would."
Feeling that the atmosphere had gotten a little awkward, Lilia coughed as she changed the direction back to something she was curious about.
"So, this friend of yours, what's her name?"
Hearing her question, Lake almost fell off his chair.
When he was about to start speaking to hopefully get out of this situation, he heard his phone that was located next to his sister rang.
Before Lake could react, he saw his sister grab his phone as she quickly answered the call.
"Hello, Lake are you there?" From the phone a feminine voice could be heard.
Although the phone wasn't on speaker, Lake could still hear the voice coming from it with his enhanced hearing from his physique, especially since the room was so small.
It was because of this, that Lake knew he was finished. When the person on the other end of the phone spoke, Lake immediately recognized the voice to be Evelyn's.
