Chapter 140: Generous mistress
Chapter 140: Generous mistress
Drake's response was immediate, tinged with a sense of urgency born of his unwavering devotion to his mistress. "My lady, though I sought the blood of the village chief, I was unable to secure it. However, I have procured that of his son, whose lineage ensures its royal quality."
Elena's gaze remained steady, her features a mask of composure as she considered his words. "Very well, Drake," she conceded with a nod, her voice a calm echo in the night. "See to it that such oversights are not repeated in the future."
Elena regarded Drake with a mixture of curiosity and slight irritation. "Drake, you mentioned you had something to discuss. What is it?" she inquired, her tone expectant.
Drake straightened his posture, steeling himself before addressing his mistress. "My lady, It's still on the subject of our food. I must express my concerns regarding my recent efforts to procure blood from the villagers," he began, his voice measured yet tinged with urgency.
Elena raised a delicate eyebrow, prompting him to continue.
"It's becoming increasingly difficult to obtain blood without drawing unwanted attention," Drake explained, his tone betraying a hint of frustration. "The villagers have become more vigilant, posting guards at their entrances and maintaining constant vigilance throughout the night. My stealthy measures are proving less effective."
Elena's expression remained impassive as she listened to his grievances. "Excuses, Drake," she remarked coolly. "As vampires, we are far superior to mere mortals. I expect more ingenuity and resourcefulness from you."
Drake's gaze faltered slightly at her rebuke, but he quickly composed himself. "Forgive me, my lady," he said, his voice tinged with remorse. "But I fear direct confrontation may be our only option. The villagers now move in groups during the day, making it nearly impossible to single out isolated individuals."
Elena shook her head in disappointment, her disappointment palpable. "Drake, you're starting to give me reasons to handle this matter myself," she declared, her tone firm.
Drake's heart sank at her words, realizing he had disappointed his mistress. "My lady, please," he implored, his voice tinged with desperation. "I will prove myself useful. You have my word."
"Anything else? And please do well to not table your incompetence to me," Elena said, not even looking at Drake.
Drake hesitated for a moment, his loyalty to Elena warring with his growing unease. With a respectful bow, he dared to voice his concerns, his words measured and respectful.
"My lady," he began, his tone deferential yet tinged with a hint of apprehension, "I fear that our guest may be proving more... unpredictable than anticipated. His actions of late suggest a growing sense of independence, one that may pose a threat to our carefully laid plans."
Elena regarded him with a cool detachment, her gaze penetrating as she absorbed his words. Though her expression remained composed, there was a flicker of concern in her emerald eyes, a recognition of the gravity of Drake's observations.
"Indeed, Drake," she acknowledged with a nod, her voice carrying a note of solemnity. "The situation with our guest requires careful handling. We cannot afford to underestimate his potential to disrupt our designs."
They both stood in the moonlight for a minute. Then Elena regarded Drake with a keen gaze, her emerald eyes betraying a hint of suspicion as she posed her question. "Drake, did you happen to observe where our guest ventured off to this evening?"
Drake hesitated for a moment, knowing full well the implications of his response. "My lady," he began, his tone respectful yet tinged with regret, "I must confess that I did indeed monitor his movements from afar. It appears that despite your warnings, he chose to stroll toward the forest once again."
Elena's brow furrowed in a subtle display of frustration, though her demeanor remained composed. "The forest?" she echoed, her voice betraying a hint of concern. "That is most troubling. I had hoped he would heed my instructions and refrain from wandering into places he ought not to go."
Drake nodded in solemn agreement, his gaze unwavering as he met Elena's eyes. "Indeed, my lady," he conceded, his tone laced with a sense of urgency. "It seems our guest may be more... independent-minded than we initially assumed. We must tread carefully in our dealings with him."
Elena absorbed his words with a thoughtful nod, her mind already formulating a plan of action. "Continue to monitor his movements closely," she instructed, her voice firm and resolute. "We cannot afford to let him unravel our carefully laid plans."
Drake nodded in understanding, his resolve bolstered by his mistress's command. "As you wish, my lady," he vowed, his loyalty unwavering as he prepared to carry out her orders. Elena with a flick of her hand dismissed Drake from her presence.
However, as she watched Drake turned and walked away, something crossed her mind. Just as he reached the threshold, her voice stopped him in his tracks.
"Drake," she called out, her tone softer this time, yet commanding.
Drake spun around, his expression a mix of surprise and anticipation. "Yes, my lady?" he responded, hurrying back to her side.
Elena regarded him with a knowing look, her emerald eyes alight with a spark of intuition. "I have a feeling that Blake may have stumbled upon something of interest in the forest," she began, her voice low but laced with certainty.
Drake's interest was piqued as he listened intently to her words.
"He mentioned meeting a woman during his previous excursion," Elena continued, her gaze penetrating. "I want you to find her."
A flicker of excitement crossed Drake's features at the prospect of a new task. "And what would you have me do once I find her, my lady?" he inquired, eager for further instructions.
Elena's lips curved into a sly smile as she leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. " I do believe this woman must be one of the locals and not of class. The chief's daughters won't wander about on their own engaging in idle gossips. You know what? You may have the woman to yourself if you wish," she murmured, a hint of mischief dancing in her eyes.
Drake's pulse quickened at her words, a surge of anticipation coursing through him. "You are far too kind, my lord," Drake said and much his appeal, Elena smiled at his adulation.
"Consider it done, my lady," he replied with a nod, a newfound determination in his demeanor.
With a satisfied nod, Elena watched as Drake swiftly departed, a plan already forming in her mind. She knew that whatever secrets the mysterious woman held could prove invaluable to her own ambitions.
