Chapter 214: Alone on an island (2)
Hours ticked by with no sign of Jordan's return. Nor was there any boat waiting to carry Tessa off the island, should she need to depart quickly. Growing anxious, she decided she couldn't simply wait around any longer.
Hefting her luggage, Tessa set off on her own in search of the resort's main office or lobby. She trekked across the abandoned grounds, passing placid koi ponds, neatly raked zen gardens, and several exquisite yet vacant villas.
'The owner does have good taste. So far all the villas I have passed by on the beach are breathtaking. Though I wonder where this rich woman the boat guy described is. She's not in any of the villas I have checked. In fact no one is here,' Tessa thought anxiously.
The longer she wandered about, the more unsettled Tessa became. This place shouldn't be so utterly empty...should it? Where had Jordan gone? And where was this owner he promised to introduce her to? Did he perhaps ditch her because she must have stressed him out? Or maybe he felt he wasn't paid enough for the job and decided to leave.
At last, after wandering around all dirty with her luggage and documents, Tessa spied a hulking figure up ahead - the first person she'd encountered on this trip so far. As she drew nearer, she realized it was a heavyset, brutal-looking man with cold, beady eyes.
"You..." The man looked her over appraisingly, not bothering to hide the lascivious nature of his stare. "You're not supposed to be here."
Tessa lifted her chin defiantly, refusing to be cowed. "I'm a guest, here for the resort. My...friend was supposed to get me checked in, but he seems to have disappeared."
Drake snorted condescendingly. "Is that so? Well then, you're in luck - the owner is available to see you right now about accommodations. Follow me." It wasn't a request.
Against her better judgment, Tessa fell into step behind the menacing stranger. He led her into an opulent condo featuring sleek modern decor, polished hardwood floors, and tasteful artworks lining the halls. This villa was by far the best out of all the ones she had checked. No wonder it was so far away from the other ones.
Visitors would surely feel cheated out if they saw this one compared to the offers they were given.
At the end of a corridor, the doors to a spacious office swung open.
"Ah, you must be our newly arrived guest!" A stunningly attractive woman rose with feline grace from a plush leather sofa. Despite her expensive tailored attire, she was being so humble and kind to Tessa.
"I'm Elena, the owner of this little island paradise." The woman flashed a dazzling smile. "Welcome! Please, allow me to give you a personal tour of our luxurious accommodations and amenities..."
Over the next hour, Elena regaled Tessa with all the lavish highlights her "exclusive five-star boutique resort" offered - private beachfront villas, world-class dining, indulgent spa services, leisure activities galore. She even magnanimously offered a "special discounted rate" for extending Tessa's stay.
For all her polished sophistication, there was something disquietingly familiar about Elena that Tessa couldn't quite put her finger on. Almost as if she'd encountered this woman before, but where...?
At long last, Elena bid Tessa farewell and her brusque male attendant escorted the young woman to one of the seaside villas that would serve as her quarters.
"Please, make yourself at home for as long as you desire, Miss Tessa," Elena had insisted with another gleaming smile. "We so rarely receive guests at this time of the year, it will be an absolute delight having you join us on the island."
With a warm smile of gratitude, Tessa took her leave to her room.
Down the corridor, Drake closed the door to Elena's office and turned to face his mistress.
"Well now, wasn't that an intriguing young lady?" The cold Drake chuckled darkly. "You want I should...take care of her before she causes any trouble?"
Elena arched one perfectly sculpted eyebrow. "Honestly Drake, must you resort to violence as a solution to every little problem?" She let out an indelicate snort.
"Miss Tessa seems nothing more than a mildly irritating, overly curious young woman, not any sort of legitimate threat."
Her expression grew more contemplative. "Though I cannot shake this nagging feeling that I know her from somewhere...that there is undoubtedly more to our guest than meets the eye."
Elena waved one perfectly manicured hand in dismissal. "No, there's no need for your...extreme measures just yet, Drake. For now, we will simply keep a close eye on Miss Tessa during her stay. If she begins overstepping her bounds and poking her pert little nose where it doesn't belong, then we may have to take...disciplinary action."
Drake cracked his knuckles meaningfully, a cruel grin splitting his brutish features. "You know I live for that kind of work, boss lady."
Elena favored him with a withering look. "Yes, well, do try to contain your barbaric impulses this time, hmm? I have a feeling permanently removing Miss Tessa may prove more trouble than it's worth."
Drake shamefully bowed his head in obedience. For now he was going to remained coiled in until Elena told him otherwise.
He however decided yo keep one little detail away from Elena and that was the fact that he had a quick snack in form of a sailor before bringing in their quaint little guest. No matter, that shouldn't be a thing Elena would be concerned about, he hoped.
Rising from her seat, Elena took a small sniff in the air and stared directly at Drake.
"Have you been doing any hunting recently? The stench of death hovers around you," she said burying her eyes into Drake's.
Drake was taken aback by her sensitivity and accuracy. What more was he expecting from Elena though?
"Don't answer that," Elena waved her hand. She simply did not care what her aide had been up to. Specifically the ones that didn't concern her.
"I'll be in Blake's quarters. Haven't checked on him in the last thirty minutes. Hopefully he wakes up soon and a little less inquisitive, I hope. Those villagers did the job I was gearing up for. Now you on the other hand, you haven't delivered the lady's head yet. Do you take me for granted, hmm?
Drake?!" Elena cat walked towards the brute Drake.
Despite him being bigger than Elena physically, he felt comparable to an ant beside her.
"The villagers have been on heavy guard recently my lord. Shall I ask that you allow me bide my time and hunt the woman down effectively?" Drake asked, head bowed.
"Hmmph... You have until the eclipse," Elena said, walking away. She had a patient in Blake who was still unconscious to check up on.
