Chapter 271: Hunger pull - Blood is on the menu

As the sharp crack of a gunshot pierced the air, Blake's senses went into overdrive. Before he could fully comprehend what was happening, a searing pain exploded across his cheek, accompanied by a powerful impact that sent him reeling backward.

The force of the blow was staggering, knocking him off balance as he stumbled backward. Heat radiated from the wound on his cheek, the intense pain searing through his senses. For a moment, everything seemed to blur as his vision swam with disorientation.

His hand instinctively flew to his face, fingers coming away slick with blood. The acrid scent of gunpowder filled the air, mingling with the metallic tang of blood. Blake's heart pounded in his chest, adrenaline coursing through his veins as he struggled to maintain his bearings.

The lady, still lying on the ground, gasped in horror as she witnessed her would-be rescuer fall under the onslaught of gunfire. Her heart raced with fear as she realized just how dangerous her situation had become. These men were clearly not to be trifled with.

Meanwhile, the man with the gun rushed to aid his fallen comrade, pulling him roughly to his feet.

The man with the gun quickly pulled his partner to his feet, urgency in his movements as he glanced back at Blake on the ground. "We need to go, now!" he urged, his voice urgent and tense.

His partner, still dazed from the earlier altercation, stumbled forward, confusion evident on his face. "What the hell happened?" he demanded, his voice tinged with panic.

"I handled it," the man with the gun replied tersely, his gaze flickering back to Blake's prone form. His eyes widened in shock as he took in the sight of Blake on the ground, blood trickling from a wound on his cheek.

"You shot him?!" his partner exclaimed, horror etched on his features as he stared at Blake.

"I had to neutralize him," the man with the gun insisted, his voice defensive. "We can't afford to take any chances. Now, we need to leave before the police show up."

The two men continued to argue, their voices growing more frantic as they debated the wisdom of their actions. But ultimately, they knew they had to flee before their situation escalated further. With one last glance at Blake's still form, they turned and hurried away into the night, leaving behind a trail of chaos and uncertainty.

The young lady glanced around, her heart racing as she realized the men were now gone. Relief washed over her, mingled with fear and confusion as she surveyed the aftermath of the encounter.

She hurriedly gathered the torn pieces of her clothing, trying to cover herself as best as she could. Her fingers fumbled with the fabric, but she managed to piece together some semblance of modesty.

Next, she reached for her bag, which the men had dropped in their haste to flee. But as she rummaged through its contents, her heart sank. Her phone was missing, likely taken by the assailants during the attack.

Feeling a pang of frustration and helplessness, she touched her face gingerly, wincing as she felt the tender skin. Blood trickled down her cheek, a painful reminder of the violence she had endured.

She glanced in the direction where the mysterious man had fallen, torn between the instinct to flee and the desire to seek help. Uncertainty gnawed at her, but she knew she couldn't stay here alone.

With a shaky breath, she made her decision. Steeling herself, she began to move cautiously toward the fallen figure, hoping against hope that he was still alive.

The young lady cautiously approached Blake's fallen form, nudging him gently with her foot. To her surprise, he groaned in response, causing her to jump back in shock.

As Blake slowly rose to his feet, rubbing his face and head, he muttered, "Gunshots are freaking loud!"

The young lady continued to back away, her eyes wide with disbelief. Wasn't this man just shot dead in the face? How was he up and moving?

Blake noticed her apprehension and turned his attention towards her, taking a step forward. However, he observed her backing away, her expression a mix of fear and confusion.

A smile tugged at Blake's lips as he realized her reaction mirrored what his might have been in a normal situation.

Back when he was just an ordinary human, he would have reacted the same way upon encountering someone seemingly impossible to kill.Hell, he had reacted that way the night Reggie fought the men at the casino back when he didn't know there were far superior beings like vampires living amongst humans.

Now, as a newly transformed vampire, he understood the vast difference between normal and abnormal, between mortality and immortality.

Blake approached the stunned young lady cautiously, concern etched on his face. "Are you okay?" he asked gently.

The young lady remained speechless, her eyes still wide with shock.

"Hey, I'm Blake," he continued, offering a reassuring smile. "Do you need help finding your way out of here? Those men could still be lurking around."

Still, the young lady remained silent, her expression distant and overwhelmed.

Deciding not to disturb her further, Blake nodded understandingly and began to back away slowly, keeping a vigilant eye on her. Once he felt he was at a safe distance, he turned away, his mind shifting to other concerns.

"Now, where did my new friends go?" he muttered to himself with a cruel smirk, sniffing the air to pinpoint their scent. "Bingo." With that, he leaped effortlessly to the wall, ready to pursue his targets.

****************

From his vantage point atop a nearby building, Blake observed the two men as they hurriedly made their way down the street. Their movements were cautious, as if they were trying to avoid drawing any attention to themselves. Blake's keen senses easily tracked their every move, his speed allowing him to keep pace effortlessly.

As the men rounded a corner and disappeared from view, Blake crouched on the rooftop, his eyes fixed on their destination. They seemed to be heading towards a nearby house, their steps quickening with every passing moment.

With a calculating gaze, Blake surveyed the area, ensuring that no one else was in sight. Satisfied that the coast was clear, he followed suit, leaping effortlessly from rooftop to rooftop until he was perched above the house where the men had entered.

The second reason he had left the lady earlier on was because she was bleeding and somehow, the scent...it was pulling him.

The scent of blood lingered in the air, drawing Blake's attention like a moth to a flame. But it wasn't just any blood that captivated him—it was the scent of the man he had kicked, the one who had drawn first blood against him. That scent called to him with an irresistible pull, driving him forward with a primal hunger that he couldn't ignore.
