Chapter 142: 300 Contribution Points, Renowned Far and Wide (II)
It was past three in the afternoon when Chen Chu and Luo Fei returned from their missions. Standing at the counter, they looked at the flickering map on the large screen with disbelief.
"Yes, sir," the female staff behind the counter responded politely. "The Changbai Mountain Range adjacent to this area is over two hundred kilometers long, with a depth of one hundred kilometers. Out of the identified traces, there had been twenty-one level 3 mutated beasts.
"In the past two days, you've killed nine of them, and the remaining twelve had been slain by other students. This area has been thoroughly cleaned up. However, these are only the level 3 mutated beasts that had been identified around the mountain range. There are still some traces of undiscovered mutated beasts deep within the mountains.
"We need to wait for the intelligence department to continue their investigation. Once we receive more information, we'll organize them into missions for distribution. If you can't wait, you can venture deeper into the mountains yourselves. The logistics department will offer 20 contribution points for each level 3 mutated beast trace not yet discovered."
The vast Changbai Mountain Range stretched for thousands of kilometers, reaching three to four hundred kilometers at its widest. Peaks and cliffs were scattered throughout, and even the authorities couldn't monitor the entire area.
As the staff finished speaking, Li Chen nearby couldn't help but comment, "Chen Chu, are you guys trying to be freaks? You've killed nearly ten level 3 mutated beasts in less than two days. I remember seeing so many level 3 missions just yesterday, and now they're all gone this morning. It turns out you've slaughtered them all."
Li Chen was also a Third Heavenly Realm student from Nantian. He had encountered Chen Chu briefly when they had been boarding the planes to Kyrola, going to Kurutoor City while Chen Chu had gone to Leisteru.
Today, luck hadn't been on his side; he had been a step late that morning, and had only been able to take a level 2 mission as a result.
Chen Chu chuckled. "Can't help it. It's your fault for being slow. But I didn't kill all of them, just half."
Does that even make a difference? Li Chen was speechless.
With that jest, Chen Chu glanced at the level 2 missions.
Searching aimlessly deep in the mountains for level 3 mutated beasts would be too much of a hassle. Between the time and effort to actually find one, and then having to carry the beast back, it could take three or four days for a single kill, back and forth.
In such circumstances, it was naturally more cost-effective to choose the level 2 mutated beasts whose locations had already been pinpointed nearby. They could wait for the level 3 missions to refresh before taking on more.
Fortunately, most of the other students weren't very efficient, so there were still plenty of level 2 missions available.
Speaking of which, a newly refreshed group mission caught Chen Chu's eye...
In a grove of wild peach trees standing ten to twenty meters tall resided a group of gray monkeys with huge claws, ranging from two to four meters in height.
It was a sunny afternoon and some of these Gray Claw Monkeys were basking in the sun on the ground, while others were frolicking and playing on the branches.
Their large numbers made them the overlords of this area; all of the local fruits and ordinary creatures were on their menu, and other mutated beasts tended to stay out of their way.
But today...
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Shockwaves ripped through the air, as two four-meter-tall level 2 monkeys and five level 1 monkeys had their heads and chests blown open into huge bloody holes, instantly killing them.
Squeak! Squeak! Squeak! Squeak!
The sudden turn of events caused chaos among the group, and the remaining monkeys started to flee deeper into the forest with terrified screams.
Boom!
With a howling wind, Chen Chu burst into the peach grove. He pressed a foot against a thick tree trunk, and the bark exploded as he kicked off of it, sending himself more than ten meters into the air. As he passed by the neck of a monkey trying to flee into the trees, he slashed out with his saber, before falling like a cannonball.
Bang!
The soil under Chen Chu's feet exploded.
He swung back, and a black sword light instantly flew toward a three-meter-tall monkey that had been rushing at him with blood-red eyes, cutting it in half.
Immediately after, Chen Chu leaped forward and pounced on another monkey, ten meters up in a nearby tree.
The monkey tried to defend itself from the incoming punch, but that only resulted in its arms being crushed, its chest collapsing with a bang, and it smashing into the peach tree behind.
Under Chen Chu's terrifying speed, the three gray monkeys that had fled into the woods were slaughtered in the blink of an eye.
But when he walked out carrying the three corpses and piled them up in the clearing outside the forest, the two paused for a moment.
Luo Fei hesitated. "Should we tie them up?"
Chen Chu paused. "...No need, just tie their tails together and we can pull them directly."
"Alright..."
Soon, a small train of corpses thirty meters long could be seen being dragged through the forest. As it passed through, all other creatures retreated from the intimidating scene.
As dusk settled, and the truck laden with gray monkey corpses rumbled back into town, many students who had already returned found themselves somewhat surprised.
"They managed to wipe out that Gray Claw Monkey group so quickly. They're really strong."
These mutated beasts had been considered troublesome ever since their discovery. Even groups of students at the Second Heavenly Realm hadn't dared to confront them, and individual Third Heavenly Realm students had found them somewhat dangerous.
None of them had expected that mission to be completed within half a day of its release.
With a total of three level 3, three level 2, and seven level 1 mutated beasts, today's haul netted the two 86 points, which was slightly less than yesterday.
After splitting, Chen Chu received 57 points, bringing his total amount to 199. The rapid growth rate left him somewhat excited.
However, while he had been busy in battle, the other students hadn't been idle, either.
After all, there were over a hundred students in Baishan Town alone at the Second Heavenly Realm, not to mention those in the late stages of the First Heavenly Realm. Missions were being completed at an astonishing rate.
As a result, Chen Chu's gains plummeted over the next few days.
Even when he and Luo Fei stopped teaming up, it still took them nearly five days of frantic searching for level 1 missions to accumulate the remaining 100 points. After a week, almost all the level 1 mutated beasts in the mountain outskirts had been wiped out.
One evening, Chen Chu stood on the dormitory balcony after dinner, playing with a level 2 Life Crystal he had obtained today.
"I wonder if I should change places after going back tomorrow?"
By now, his contribution points had accumulated to 302, just enough to exchange for the high-level Dragon Elephant Tyrant Body art. The plan was to return to school tomorrow to switch to cultivating that art.
At the same time, he was considering whether to move to another town. He had killed nearly half of the known mutated beasts in this mountain range, including most of those at level 3.
However, such overwhelming dominance was quickly proving to be boring. If he hadn't needed the contribution points so badly, he would have ventured into the depths of the mountains to seek out some powerful mutated beasts to battle.
No wonder Lin Xue and the others hadn't been very interested in this purge. Compared to the low-level ones here, the powerful mutated beasts over on the battlefield offered more challenge.
Moving to a different town also might not make much difference.
Someone must have spread the message to the school's group, saying that he had wiped out half of the level 3 mutated beasts in Baishan Town within two days, which made the rest of the students there nervous. Those at the Third Heavenly Realm had been especially alarmed, even taking on missions to kill the remaining few level 3 mutated beasts in the mountains overnight.
Many students had also been actively taking on tasks one by one, with many forming teams to continuously hunt down the remaining level 2 mutated beasts. It seemed as though they were worried he might swoop in and snatch the kills away.
If Luo Fei hadn't mentioned this to him, Chen Chu would have genuinely considered rushing over to claim a few level 3 missions on the third day.
"Are these guys really that desperate?"
Chen Chu couldn't help but shake his head at the thought. Then, his mind echoed with a familiar phrase. Convert to attribute points.
"You have converted one Level 2 Life Crystal, gaining 13 attribute points."
"13 points this time." Chen Chu noted with a slight pause.
Other students who had slain mutated beasts had also acquired some level 1 Life Crystals, promptly putting them to use upon their return. Compared to level 3 and 4, the level 1 Life Crystals were much more common.
After looking at the 25 attribute points that the page now boasted, Chen Chu gazed up at the night sky, whispering with anticipation, "Dragon Elephant Tyrant Body."
Chen Chu had been eagerly anticipating this high-level art, lauded by both Pang Long and Liu Feixu. He had diligently amassed 300 contribution points over many days to obtain it.
More than half a month ago, Pang Long had subtly hinted to Chen Chu that his performance in Kyrola could help him earn the Dragon Elephant Tyrant Body without the need for contribution points. However, doing so would have potentially resulted in missed opportunities, seemingly linked to certain information he had submitted.
In the end, Chen Chu had decided to accumulate his points independently.
After all, for someone like him, who far surpassed the Third Heavenly Realm in strength, this large purge mission was a convenient and easy source of contribution points. There was no need to abandon certainty for the sake of uncertainty.
"I wonder what Old Pang and the others are up to, being so secretive," Chen Chu mused, shaking his head.
