Chapter 86: Too Strong
In the murky river, as the mutated crocodile was sent flying, the armored beast swiftly chased after it and pounced. Its massive left claw swung down with force.
Bang!
Under the attack, the crocodile's head plunged straight into the riverbed, up to half of its body sinking into the mud. It started thrashing wildly, its colossal body unleashing astonishing power.
The entire riverbed turned turbid, splashes of water swirling about violently.
Normally, a crocodile could hold its breath underwater for an hour or two. After undergoing mutation, this crocodile's ability to hold its breath had become even longer.
But a few minutes later, with a crisp snap, the crocodile’s frenzied struggles abruptly ceased.
Watching the crocodile, its neck now snapped, the armored beast let out a breath of air bubbles, a trace of regret in its eyes.
At first, upon seeing this crocodile that had looked so similar to itself, it had contemplated whether to recruit it as a subordinate. Having a bodyguard following it around seemed like a good idea.
Who would have thought this guy would be so foolish.
The armored beast grabbed onto the mutated crocodile's body with both claws, sinking its teeth into it as its eyes started to leak tears...
Hmm!
...Only for them to suddenly light up. This crocodile actually tasted nice, with a more chewy texture than the meat of those mutated fish.
"Ah Chu, Ah Chu..." Seeing Chen Chu suddenly lost in thought, Xia Youhui called out twice.
"What's wrong...?" Chen Chu snapped back to reality.
Xia Youhui gave him a strange look, then said, "I was thinking, should we split up this afternoon? It might be more efficient."
"That works." Chen Chu nodded. He had originally teamed up with Xia Youhui to watch his back. With his sharp perception and his cultivation at the Third Heavenly Realm, the Blood Cultists they encountered couldn't even escape.
"I feel like we need to hurry this afternoon. After this wave of ambushes, those Blood Cultists might hide deeper and won't be as easy to catch." Chen Chu reminded Xia Youhui.
"I was thinking the same."
After finishing their meal, the two quickly returned to the Law Enforcement Bureau; some of the folks there hadn't even had lunch yet. After reviewing the files, Chen Chu quickly pinpointed a suspicious location.
At two o'clock in the afternoon, Chen Chu arrived alone at an old community in the southern part of the city. Just as he approached, Chen Chu's keen sense of smell caught a faint scent of blood in the air, his gaze turning towards a nearby building.
As his physique grew stronger, even without relying on the Insightful Eye, his hearing, vision, and sense of smell had become increasingly super-human.
Chen Chu’s footsteps were heavy as he ascended the dim staircase. When he passed the third floor, someone opened up their door, intending to leave. As soon as they saw Chen Chu, clad in black and red armor and carrying a saber on his back, quickly shut the door again.
Chen Chu ignored these civilians as he continued to slowly ascend, following the faint scent of blood in the air.
Finally, his footsteps halted outside the door of apartment 603 on the sixth floor.
Knock, knock, knock!
Chen Chu lightly tapped on the door.
"Who is it?" came a man's voice from inside.
In a deep voice, Chen Chu said, "Delivery."
Boom!
Before the man could respond, Chen Chu directly slammed his shoulder against the metal door. Under the terrifying force, the door frame and surrounding parts of the wall were all sent flying.
Amid the smoke and dust, Chen Chu gazed coldly at the panicked figure in the living room, a handsome man with a pale complexion wearing glasses.
Behind the corner of the sofa next to the man, he could partially see a pale, lifeless hand.
"What... what do you want?" Seeing Chen Chu crash through the wall, the man looked terrified.
Chen Chu coldly said, "Stop with the pretense. I can smell the blood on you even with my eyes closed."
Exposed, the man’s expression changed as he lamented, "Why... why won't you let me go? I just want to live, I just want to live a good life!"
As he spoke, the man's crimson vitality, at the peak of the First Heavenly Realm, erupted, and he grabbed the coffee table, throwing it towards Chen Chu, before turning and rushing towards the window.
Boom!
The coffee table burst in pieces mid-air, and Chen Chu appeared behind the man in an instant, a domineering slash descending.
Splat!
The man was instantly split into halves, thudding to the ground with a loud bang. The hot blood gushed out, quickly staining the floor red and forming a gruesome and brutal scene.
"1 contribution point earned." Chen Chu’s tone was casual as he flicked his wrist, shaking off the blood on his blade. He then took out his phone and called the law enforcement team to come clean up the mess.
Unfortunately, on Chen Chu’s next mission, the Blood Cultists who had committed a murder three days ago had dealt with the aftermath cleanly, leaving no traces.
It was already past five in the afternoon when he returned to the hotel after his busy day. Most of his classmates had returned as well, many of them wearing smiles and obviously having made good gains.
Not everyone had been able to track down the Blood Cultists’ trail however. And after today, the remaining cultists would likely be even more cautious. The longer they walked free, the more people they would kill to refine, and the stronger they would get.
According to Xia Youhui's estimation, each person they killed would be equivalent to at least half a month of hard training at school. Their strength could skyrocket in no time. Even with the time it took to refine a victim’s essence, it was an incredibly easy and quick way to advance. It was no wonder why this had caused a bloodbath decades ago.
After dinner, Chen Chu went to the basement logistics department. After killing both a First and Second Heavenly Realm cultist today, he now had 4 contribution points, just enough to make an exchange.
Behind the counter this time was another person. Seeing Chen Chu, he greeted enthusiastically, "Hello, may I help you exchange for something?"
"One Level 1 Life Crystal," Chen Chu replied.
"Alright, please wait a moment."
In the elevator, Chen Chu reached into his pocket, grasping the Life Crystal as he issued a mental command: Convert into attribute points.
"You have converted one Level 1 Life Crystal and gained 4 attribute points."
Looking at the attribute page showing 23 points, a smile spread across Chen Chu's face. This would be enough for him to enhance the Insightful Blade to the third stage. With that, he would be able to transform his true power into sharp saber qi, and his combat power would once again soar.
Returning to his hotel room, Chen Chu heard Xia Youhui calling out to him from the sofa. "Chen Chu, you're back just in time. Luo Fei was just talking about you in the group."
"Did she need me for something?" Chen Chu asked, puzzled.
"No, she was just asking why you haven't been active in the group chat these past two days."
“I was busy training," Chen Chu replied, bemused.
With his recent breakthrough to the Third Heavenly Realm, his enthusiasm for training had soared. He had also had to spend energy controlling the armored beast and directing its hunting, filling his schedule to the brim.
After today’s cultist hunt, he hadn’t cultivated at all. He had been absent-minded even as he fed the armored beast.
"I knew it." Xia Youhui shook his head.
With that reminder, however, Chen Chu also opened the chat group and popped in a message.
Chen Chu: By the way, Lin Xue, has An Fuqing broken through to the Third Heavenly Realm?
Lin Xue: Huh, Chen Chu, how did you know she broke through?
Chen Chu hesitated for a moment.
Chen Chu: ...I just guessed.
Luo Fei: Today, An Fuqing encountered a rebel cultivator at the Third Heavenly Realm. Even though she was at the Second Realm, she crushed him.
Luo Fei: We returned to base, and not even half a day later, she had already broken through to the Third Heavenly Realm. Isn't that amazing?
Chen Chu: That's amazing! She truly deserves to be the top genius of Nantian.
His tone completely hid the fact that he had already broken through to the Third Heavenly Realm long ago.
Xia Youhui: Her talent has always been ridiculous. It's completely expected for her to suddenly break through to the Third Heavenly Realm.
Xia Youhui: Especially after coming here and experiencing so many battles. She's not lacking in resources either.
Xia Youhui couldn't help but feel envious. He also wanted to break through like An Fuqing did, as easily as drinking water.
