Chapter 473: Until death
Out of a sudden, enormous energy currents were released from John’s body, making him shine in a golden light as he took a deep breath.
His eyes had turned golden as well as his hair, only for the spatial affinity intertwined mana to rupture his skin.
“To think that I’m still unable to control my spatial attributed constitution…”
Looking at his hand, Cheng saw a golden hue enveloping it as John smiled lightly.
His entire skin was torn apart by the turbulent spatial affinity, and he could only shake his head before his attention diverted back to Cheng, who nodded at him, with the same irresolute expression.
What only Cheng and John’s late wife knew was that John had acquired a spatial attributed constitution within a dungeon they had conquered when they were still in the basic dimensions.
It was something unheard of at that time because the Primordial dimensions were labeled as extremely dangerous.
However, instead of considering it a blessing, the spatial attributed constitution was something John thought of as an inconvenience he couldn’t handle.
Only after sealing it as much as possible was he barely able to cope with the leaking energies.
Over time, John was able to unlock one seal after another but never was it possible for him to release everything at once because his body as a vessel was way too weak to cope with the torment energies ravaging inside his body.
Yet, in the end, this was something John couldn’t control so he had no choice but to release all seals, in the face of the only man he didn’t want to fight by all means.
‘Just what happened to you? Why are you attacking us after we’ve known each other for more than 200 years?! What made you attack us despite the reluctance I can clearly perceive from you?!?!’
Rage ignited within John, and he released everything within him, drenching him in blood and his skin perforated only a few seconds later.
At that moment, hundreds of spatial portals manifested in the surrounding, enclosing John and Cheng like a dome.
Ignoring this, Cheng charged towards John without hesitation, his eyes still ice-cold, ready to kill if it was necessary.
His reluctance had completely dispersed, giving him the ability to fight full-heartedly, which was the best protection he could give his family.
Suddenly, when he was a few meters away, Cheng noticed how he was losing his balance as he saw two spatial portals appear on the ground exactly below his feet.
The two spatial portals had their respective counterparts appearing right next to John, who was about to slash at them with his broadsword.
He didn’t hesitate at all and it was only when Cheng pierced through the spatial portals that had targeted his feet that he could barely deflect the heavy broadsword’s slash.
In the end, the deflect was not perfect, and Chen could only feel a painful sting in his right foot as he forced himself out of the spatial portal, using the longswords in his hand to push himself from the ground.
Half of his right foot had been cut off which Cheng noticed with a grim expression.
Despite the painful ache in his foot, he simply ignored it as he thought that it was the best for him to encounter John because his spatial constitution was something he was unable to cope with, even after releasing every single trait.
However, now that he understood what John was trying to do, Cheng was more careful about the moves he did as he observed his surroundings with more vigilance.
John was by all means not omnipotent and the amount of energy he released took a huge toll on his body and mind.
As such, despite having released his most powerful form, Cheng was likely to win as long as he was stalling.
Nevertheless, stalling was exactly what he was not supposed to do, because he immediately felt his chest heating up. Frustrated, he could only grit his teeth and push ahead.
Yet, the moment he wanted to slash at John, he had disappeared from the spot.
Instead, there were only a dozen spatial portals that appeared around Cheng, who slashed at all of them by swirling around.
After he completed one round, the spatial portals simply dispersed, leaving only one behind and he saw something emerge through it.
However, instead of John, it was just a wooden log which Cheng instinctively pierced.
In that second, another spatial portal manifested through which John emerged, slashing at Cheng’s back.
Using his fast speed and reflexes, Cheng let go of the longsword that had pierced into the extremely heavy log of wood before he jumped forward, rolling on the ground while sensing a gust of wind brushing past his neck.
John’s broadsword missed him by a hair’s breadth, only to give Cheng the quarter of a second’s time he needed to pierce his longsword into John’s calf.
At least, that was what Cheng had expected.
Never could he have imagined that John was able to be quick enough to manifest a small spatial portal on the surface of his calves, preventing him from being injured severely.
Yet, even worse for Cheng was that the spatial portal’s counterpart appeared right behind him.
As such, he pierced himself, forcing Cheng to retract his weapon at a rapid pace, only to back off once again.
Fighting against John was more painful than he had expected, and he had initially hoped that his friends could just kill him with one attack.
However, that had only been his hope, and Cheng decided to accept the pain as his punishment for betraying his closest friends.
This was the only thing he could do as the large number of spatial portals around him appeared once again.
Yet, instead of swinging around his weapon needlessly, Cheng was fully concentrated and braced for an attack but nothing happened.
When the spatial portals disappeared once again, he noticed that John stood right in front of him, slashing out with his broadsword.
Cheng slashed out with his weapon too, only to realise too late that he had jumped right into his friends’ trap.
Suddenly, John disappeared using instant transportation, as everything that was happening behind him was revealed.
A ginormous-looking manifestation of a dragon enveloped a seemingly ordinary arrow that shot out of one of the numerous spatial portals.
John had waited for the last moment to disappear from Cheng’s sight, giving him the shortest duration to react.
He had completed his task as a bait perfectly, but there was not a trace of joy on his face as he witnessed how his best friend was devoured by Gaby’s attack which she had prepared the entire time he and Cheng had fought each other.
It had already been too late when Cheng realised that Gaby had prepared her strongest attack to kill him, while John had only been the bait, trapping Cheng.
Seeing the several meter long hues of a dragon around the arrow that was about to pierce through the left side of his chest, Cheng’s guilt and regret dispersed as he smiled lightly,
“Thank you!”
Only a moment later, the arrow pierced Cheng’s chest, while the dragon manifestation seemed to devour humanity’s traitor, whole and alive.
