Chapter 1461: Hong Qiang left the prison.
Hong Qiang lowered his head and pursed his lips as he kneaded his hands on the table helplessly. He appeared uneasy as he said, “It isn’t that I don’t wanna tell you who paid me to make a fake confession; I just truly don’t have an idea on who the person is.”
Pei Ge looked at the man; he did not appear to be lying.
“So you don’t know that person as well?”
“Yes. I’m sorry; I did all these for my daughter.” He covered his face as tears wetted his eyes.
“This isn’t your mistake. If I were in your shoes, I’d likely do the same thing.” As a mother, she understood how important his child was to him. For instance, Ji Chi visiting her at the hospital could make her feel better the whole day, while Ran Ran coming down with a flu could make her feel gloomy for days.
“I’ve let you down.”
“You haven’t. You did it for your child, after all. Even if you didn’t do it, they would still get someone else to do it.”
“‘They’?” The man lifted his head, hesitation flashing across his eyes. “You know the one behind it?”
“I don’t know; I just have a guess.” She shook her head.
Pei Ge did not stay long there. Once seated in the car, the man seated next to her gave a look. Ji Ziming could not help asking, “Did he tell you who your attacker was?”
“He doesn’t know the person’s identity.”
“He didn’t see the person?”
“No.” She turned to look outside the window as she sighed. The window was slightly open, and the breeze made a mess of her hair. Likewise, her mind was a mess right now.
“Not only is the person’s face unknown, even the gender and age can’t be determined from the voice. There’s no way to begin the investigation.” Her feather-like lashes lowered helplessly. The breeze brought her no sense of comfort.
“What if I tell you that I’ve found some leads?” Ji Ziming looked at the road ahead as the chilliness in his eyes intensified. He had long known that Hong Qiang was unreliable. Since that guy could take the blame for knocking down someone for his daughter, it meant that he could set up a backup plan for her.
This was another thing a father could do for his daughter.
Pei Ge’s lashes flew up just like the fluttering of butterfly wings. She turned around to look at the man in anticipation. “You have leads? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Your mind was set on that guy, just like a drowning man clutching on the last straw. If I were to tell you then, you might not listen to me.”
“You’re so horrible!” She chided him. The happiness in her eyes could not be concealed. “Tell me quickly what you found out!”
“I can’t tell you now. Wait till the result of the investigation comes out; I’ll tell you then, naturally.” The man narrowed his eyes as he looked at the red light in front. Suddenly, he recalled having made all the traffic lights in the entire city turn red for a minute in order to bring this woman, who had been run down by a car, to the hospital without delay. Alas, she did not know of it. This woman should only know that he would always be by her side.
Seeing the look in his eyes, Pei Ge became relieved. It was her mistake to treat that guy in prison as her last straw, while it was his mistake not to tell her anything when he saw her busying herself with this matter.
There were numerous kinds of rewards. As for punishment...
He he! A cunning look flashed across her eyes, which failed to escape the cold gaze of the man, who was driving.
When they arrived at the hospital, the director and Madam Ji were sitting at the nurse station outside the VVIP ward. When he saw Ji Ziming returning with Pei Ge in tow, he quickly approached him. “Sir, your mother wanted to—”
“I know.” The man’s cold eyes moved. His mother’s presence made his icy aura intensify. The hand he used to hold his woman’s hand tightened as a result.
Madam Ji walked toward her son, and when she saw the couple holding hands tightly, she had the urge to separate them.
“Son, something happened to the company; do you know?” She pretended to be nervous.
He frowned. “What’s the matter?”
Although he had not been to the company these past few days, there was nothing he did not know about it. Therefore, he did not know where his mother got such news.
“The contract you signed with the Dongfang family last month showed a problem. The family’s representative gave me a call today; he didn’t inform you through the company on the account of my face.”
Ji Ziming quickly recalled the Dongfangs signing an agreement with him last month.
That representative was called Dongfang Wenlin, a sixty-two-year-old uncle who was still full of vigor. He had a daughter who was studying in France. This daughter was not just a great beauty but also quite brainy.
She was such a rare gem that the elders in her family wanted her to be matched with Ji Ziming whom they were bent on making into a son-in-law. Unfortunately for them, the man rejected their offer at the expense of both families’ collaboration. In the end, the lady herself brought alive the collaboration again, letting it push through.
“Do you not believe me?” His mother interrupted his thoughts. She was upset over his sceptical look.
“Ziming, return to the company. I’m almost fully recovered.” Pei Ge returned to her senses and realized that she was not in her wheelchair, nor did she have bandage around her leg, as she appeared before the man’s mother today. Thankfully, the latter did not notice this as the older woman’s goal was to make her son leave the hospital with her. It did not matter where he went, as long as it was away from this young lady.
“What about you?” The man understood at once that this was just his mother’s scheme to separate him from his beloved. He gazed at his woman with a rare, endearing look in his cold eyes. “Can you manage on your own here?”
“What are you afraid of? There are doctors and nurses here; I’ll be fine.” The woman gave him a do-not-worry-and-just-go smile. “The company’s matters are more important. It’s not too late for you to come over after you’re done with work. I won’t run away.”
Her last remark set off alarm bells in his heart, and the chilliness he exuded made his mother feel slightly terrified.
“Alright.” He nodded his head.
The older woman was elated that her son agreed to leave with her. This went rather well. On the way here, she thought of various ways to convince her son into leaving with her. She did not expect herself to succeed in making him go back to their house and have a good chat with Qu Jingwan on her first try.
The mother-son pair left. Just as Pei Ge moved to nap in her VVIP ward, a call came from the hospital director.
“Ma’am, Niu Niu’s father is back.”
“I understand.”
