Chapter 1527: Who is the one spreading rumors?

“Auntie, I spoke casually, so don’t take it seriously, or else if Pei Ge finds out about it, she’ll definitely come ask me for payback.”

“Payback. What payback? What payback does she want? If there is even payback, it should be me looking for her.”

Madam Ji raised an eyebrow as she spoke coldly. “If I really confirm this, I won’t let her stay in the house anymore.”

“Please calm down a bit, auntie. She’s part of this family now no matter what. You can’t do that now.”

She ignored the worry apparent in Qu Jingwan’s eyes. Her voice turned even colder as she pulled the latter into the elevator. The moment the doors closed, her gaze turned more distant. “Hurry and give Ziming a call. Ask him to bring Pei Ge back now.”

“Those two are outside right now; they won’t make it back this fast.” Qu Jingwan did not expect the older woman to rush confirming Pei Ge’s pregnancy. It was progressing faster than what she had planned.

“Give my son a call now. I can’t wait any longer. I will beat anyone who says that Pei Ge’s pregnancy is fake; I’ll make their mouths shut forever.”

When the elevator doors opened again, she had still not managed to convince Madam Ji to give up the thought. It was, hence, also hard for the latter to calm down and accompany Ji Chi.

“Yes, yes, yes. Auntie, I will give him a call now. Don’t be anxious.” She helped the older woman into the VIP ward and then stood outside it with her phone in hand. She blankly stared at the man’s name on her phone. Ever since that hotel incident, she had not had the courage to speak to him.

“Hurry and call my son. I will have him investigate who is spouting the rumors behind our backs. If there really is someone, I will definitely rip this person’s mouth apart.”

Qu Jingwan trembled. It seemed that a new problem was brewing before the old one could be solved.

Under the older woman’s rushing, she finally dialed the man’s number. The call rang for a long time before it was answered, and the man’s chilly voice sounded. “What?”

He spoke curtly with a cold furrow in his glabella, standing by the floor-to-ceiling and looking at the pedestrians, who were as small as ants, on the street below.

“Ziming, your mom asked me to—”

“Jingwan, pass me the phone.” Madam Ji reached out and snatched the phone from her. She then spoke in a loud, agitated voice. “Son, do you know that there is someone talking behind our backs? They said that Pei Ge isn’t pregnant. That’s not true, right?”

The man’s eyes deepened. Since it was Qu Jingwan who called her, this incident must have something to do with her.

“Who did you hear it from?”

“I don’t know who’s talking behind our backs, too. Hurry and go investigate. Also, bring Pei Ge home. I want to bring her to the doctors for a checkup, or else I won’t feel safe. How dared someone spread rumors behind our backs? If those gossip reporters find out about this, where will we put our face? My grandchild isn’t even born yet has to go through such suffering.”

Qu Jingwan stood at the side, watching the older woman getting worried and afraid, feeling an exhilarating joy. She was one step away from ripping apart Pei Ge’s mask, from making her lose Madam Ji’s trust again, and from making her leave the family forever.

What if she has children with Ji Ziming? There’s nothing that I can’t get if I want it.

“Son? Are you still there?” Madam Ji did not hear a reply from the other end. No other sound could be heard in this place other than her voice, making the area seem even quieter.

“I’m still here. I will have someone investigate it. Is there another issue on your side? If there isn’t, I will go to the meeting now.” Ji Ziming turned around and spotted Pei Ge sitting on the sofa. The warm sunlight showered her in a golden hue, as though bathed in an angel’s radiance.

His lips curled up, but the darkness in his eyes was a stark contrast to this scene. “I’ll hang up if there isn’t anything else.”

“I said bring Pei Ge home; I will accompany her for a checkup.” Madam Ji repeated this but only heard the busy tone from the phone as a reply. She realized that her son had hung up on her.

“That son of mine, he dared hang up on me.” She held the phone away from her ear. As she returned it to Qu Jingwan, her gaze was full of complaint. “Is this considered as forgetting one’s mother after having a wife?”

“How could that be? Isn’t he going to a meeting? He’s busy, so where will he find the time to bring Pei Ge home?”

Qu Jingwan had heard the subtle refusal of the man during the phone call, and her smile deepened.

Everything was progressing according to her plan.

“He’s busy, but he could’ve let someone send Pei Ge home.”

“She’s pregnant now, so how could he feel safe having someone else send her home? He may not feel reassured even if it’s you.”

“You are right. Then, I’ll just wait for his news. Anyway, I want to bring Pei Ge personally for a prenatal checkup.”

“Okay, auntie. Let’s go inside. Baby should wake up anytime now.”

The older woman pushed the door open. She had only taken a step into the door when she turned to look at her, saying, “Go make a call and tell my son to hurry back.”

“Okay, auntie; I will.” She nodded and waited for the older woman to enter before giving Old Lady Qu a call.

The moment the call connected, her grandmother’s hoarse voice was heard. “What is it? Is Ji Ziming’s mother starting to believe that Pei Ge’s pregnancy is fake?”

“Grandma, I haven’t told her yet about that woman having her period right now. She told me to call Ji Ziming earlier. Do you think he’ll suspect that I’m the one behind it?”

“He doesn’t suspect. He believes you are the one who said it.”

Her face lost all color instantly as she widened her eyes to look at Madam Ji talking to Ji Chi through the window panes. She quickly covered the mouthpiece with her hand and continued. “Then, what should I do now that he’s suspicious of me? How do I explain it to him?”

“Explain what? This is the truth. You are merely speaking the truth. Plus, Pei Ge is the one lying to his mother, so what does it have to do with you? You only need to do what you must and work hard to attain the position of that family’s mistress. Don’t care about anything else. I will prepare everything else that you need.”
