Chapter 1535: You only know how to make me happy.
Seeing the white prawn meat in her father’s hands, Ran Ran drooled and pulled at her soft hair as her eyes darted about. It was as though she would keep doing this if he did not give her any.
“Can. Everything I’m peeling right now is for you.” Ji Ziming did not look at Qu Jingwan even once despite her sitting right beside him and his mother.
“Really? Thanks, daddy!” The girl sat between her parents and hurriedly moved the plate from his to her front. Excitedly, she picked up the juicy prawn with her fork and sang praises about it while chewing the meat in her tiny mouth.
“The prawns cooked by Auntie Zhang are truly tasty. Daddy, can I still eat these tomorrow?” She blinked at her father with anticipation.
Ji Ziming’s deep eyes were affable. “Of course, you can; remember to tell Auntie Zhang about this.”
Qu Jingwan’s smile froze when she saw the man acting as a deeply affectionate father. She gripped the chopsticks even tighter as though afraid that someone would steal them.
“Lass, come try this cooking today.” Madam Ji picked up some vegetables and placed them in her bowl but noticed that the lady’s eyes were fixated on her son. She looked at him so endearingly, seemingly having not seen him for a long time.
“Jingwan, Jingwan.” She prodded her several times, and when she saw her son being unresponsive toward the lady, her head could not help but ache. She should not have interfered in such a relationship matter. When her husband went to the U.S., he asked her to come with him, but she could not leave their grandson alone at home, so she rejected it.
“Huh, auntie? I’m sorry; I was just—”
“I understand; come and let’s eat.”
She defused the lady’s embarrassment, while her son remained indifferent and unsmiling throughout their dinner.
The dinner was finished after much difficulty. As Pei Ge brought the kids upstairs to rest, the man was held back by his mother in the living room. The pair sat on the sofa face to face; one was cold and detached, while the other anxious.
“What do you want Jingwan to do? Your fiancée is treating you nicely every day, yet you’re like that to her.”
“You’re the one who made her my fiancée before; I didn’t agree to it.”
“The whole city knows now that the Qus’ eldest mistress is our family heir’s fiancée. Everyone, including those guests and celebrities invited, is looking forward to your wedding, and this is how you—”
“Pei Ge is the only woman I love, and you’re also aware of that. If you insist on pushing Qu Jingwan to me, I’m afraid that I can’t fulfill your wish.”
“You only know about Pei Ge. I didn’t even castigate her for what she did this time, yet you’re using her to pressure me.”
She became more enraged as she spoke and had the urge to break open her son’s brain to see what he was thinking in there; what made him so smitten with that woman? She wanted to see what Pei Ge had put in his brain, such that his son would join hands with the woman in carrying out such an elaborate setup and keeping her, his mother, in the dark.
Ji Ziming could not bear to stay in the living room anymore and stood up in desolation as he told his mother, “If you insist on doing things your way, I’ll insist on my way of doing things. I’m a father and husband.”
“You’re my son as well!”
“They need me more.”
He turned around and headed to the staircase, knocking into Qu Jingwan, who was coming down. Bumping into the man’s strong chest, she fell onto the ground and looked up right into his cold eyes. She opened her mouth but did not say anything.
Only when she saw the man enter his room did she stand up to walk slowly toward the sofa. “Auntie, did you quarrel with Ziming? I just saw him not looking very happy.”
“It isn’t a quarrel between us but a generation gap. If he’s upset, I’m upset as well.” Madam Ji shot a glance at where her son had disappeared to not too long ago before continuing to speak. “I raised a son and didn’t require him to do anything much since young. Now, he’s not even giving me an out.”
“Did you quarrel with him because of me?” Qu Jingwan appeared nervous; the worry on her face calmed the older woman slightly.
“No matter what my son does in the future, don’t leave him, alright?”
There seemed to be a glint of anticipation in the older woman’s eyes as she waited for her affirmation.
She was stunned. Fearful that the first thing the man would do was kick her out of the house, she did not expect his mother to say something like this to her. This placed her in high spirits.
Qu Jingwan nodded and moved her red lips as she spoke with determination. “Auntie, please be at ease that I won’t leave him. I’ll always be by his side. Perhaps, he can’t forget about Pei Ge now, but it’s alright; after all, she gave birth to three, lovely children for him. I won’t force him to marry me, either. I just want to stay by his side quietly, and whenever he needs me, I’ll appear, but when he doesn’t, I’ll hide. As long as he’s happy, it doesn’t matter what happens to me.”
Listening to her utter a seeming promise, Madam Ji’s guilt toward her intensified.
“You’re truly kind. I’ll visit your mother and grandmother once I’m free to see how they raised you into such an outstanding lady that even I can’t find fault with.”
She lowered her head and smiled. “As much as mom and grandma taught me well, it can’t compare to the experience I gained from living with you.”
“You really know how to make me happy as if your mouth is coated in sugar.”
The older woman was delighted to be praised by her. The latter’s words simply meant that she was determined not to leave her son no matter what happened in the future as her love for him was so deep.
No matters should be rushed.
When the man returned to his room, he sensed that something was off. He quickly showered and knocked on Pei Ge’s door. She was inside packing up the toys and study materials for her daughter’s use the next day. She had recently decided to hire a teacher for the three kids.
“Open the door!” His deep, charismatic voice was heard from outside the door.
She put down the books and clothes in hand and walked to open the door. The moment the man saw that the three children were not present, he immediately embraced her slim waist and carried her into their room.
