“Police?!”

Pei Zhenghui looked on in shock as the police introduced themselves again.

He was in disbelief once he heard their reason for being here.

“How could that be? My wife might be fierce, but there’s no way she’d capable of murdering someone. You must’ve gotten it wrongly!”

He and Pei Shishi were in disbelief.

However, compared to his daughter’s feigned expression, his was a lot more natural.

“Yes. How could my mother be capable of something like that? You must’ve mistaken her for someone else.”

She nodded heavily, adding to her father’s claim.

“Sir, miss, we’ll get to the bottom of this, so please don’t worry. If your family truly didn’t attempt to murder the victim, we’d be wronging her.”

Even though the police’s professional reply left him in discontent, he still gave in eventually.

He turned to his daughter.

“Where’s your mother? Ask her to come down now,” he said coldly, frowning at his daughter.

“It’s so late now; she must’ve gone to bed already.” Pei Shishi subconsciously lied.

The housekeeper pursed her lips tightly when she heard her words.

She clearly saw her madam walk upstairs with bloodied hands earlier; how could she be asleep in such a short time?

Could her... madam truly attempt to kill someone just like what the police were saying?

As the housekeeper thought of this, she shuddered but did not speak of what she had seen.

“Asleep? Xiao He, go upstairs and call your madam down!”

The Pei patriarch knitted his brows tightly together and asked the housekeeper to summon his wife downstairs.

Alas, this housekeeper had already been scared silly; how could she still dare to go upstairs?!

Her head was filled with thoughts of how her madam had tried to kill someone. What would she do if she got killed going up?

Hence, when she heard her master’s order, she only shuddered and did not even attempt to head upstairs.

“Are you deaf? I asked you to go upstairs and get your madam!”

When the housekeeper did not heed his order, the man’s mood soured.

At this moment, everybody’s attention was on the housekeeper.

The way she was shivering, with her head hanging low, as if afraid of something, raised the suspicions of the police.

Similarly, her reaction also rang alarm bells in Pei Shishi’s heart.

Why is our housekeeper so nervous and scared? She’s usually quite obedient. Why would she behave this way before the police today?

Could it be because...

At this thought, her expression turned ugly.

“Dad, I’ll go up and get mom.”

She took a deep breath to calm herself down so that the two police officers present would not catch any hint of things.

“It’s fine; you go.”

Her father waved, annoyed as he took a glance at her ankle.

She was about to go up when her mother unexpectedly appeared before everyone’s eyes.

“What’s with the commotion? Did something happen?”

Wearing her comfy sleep robe, her mother yawned as she stood by the second-floor railings.

Looking at the figure on the second floor, the two police officers exchanged looks.

“Mom, did we wake you up?” asked her daughter in mock concern.

“Yes. We must improve this house’s soundproofing; it’s quite terrible.”

As she spoke, she descended the stairs.

“These two are?”

After she got to the living room, she looked at the two police officers in civilian clothes in surprise.

“Ah, mom, they’re the police. They said that they’re here for you.”

Her daughter blinked as she walked closer to her.

Liu Yan’s eyes widened in shock when she heard her words.

“Here for me?”

“Yes. Madam, you’re a suspect in madam Zhang Manhua’s case, so we’re bringing you to the station now.”

“No offense.”

With that, they fastened the cold handcuffs on her hands.

She froze as the handcuffs were put on her wrists.

Hints of panic flashed across her face, despite her daughter’s advice from earlier.

“Let go of my mother! Take me if you want to take somebody!”

When she heard the clicking of handcuffs on her mother’s wrists, Pei Shishi suddenly ran in front of her mother, unwilling to let the police take the latter with them.

“Sorry, missy, we’re just doing our job.”

After the two police officers apologized, they pushed her to the side apathetically.

They then nodded at Pei Zhenghui before they took the woman who had remained silent since she was handcuffed with them.

As she watched the police leave, Pei Shishi lifted her head and glared at her father furiously.

“Dad, why don’t you have any reaction? The police have taken mom!”

Hearing her daughter’s accusations, the man did not even flinch. He glanced plainly at her and walked upstairs.

As such, there was only her and the housekeeper left in the living room.

“M-Miss... ar-are you okay?” The housekeeper murmured in a trembling voice when she saw the anger on her face.

“Tell me; did you see anything?!”

She scrutinized the housekeeper standing before her with wide eyes.

“Ah!” The housekeeper shook her head hurriedly; her face was pale. “Nothing, nothing! I didn’t hear or see anything!”

“Since you didn’t hear anything, you’d better not have heard anything in the future as well, or else, don’t blame me.”

With that, she walked up the stairs with a cold expression.

Knock, knock, knock!

She gently knocked on the door of the study. Moments later, her father’s voice came from inside.

“Come in.”
