Chi Shuyan shook her head as tears shimmered in her eyes. She looked fixedly at Chi Lingyan and complained, “No, that’s our home, I don’t want to let anyone else in.”
Chi Shuyan knew her father too well. If other adults were listening, they definitely would have scolded her for being inconsiderate. Although Chi Lingyan, who had transformed into a daughter slave, was somewhat helpless, he felt that his daughter’s territorial awareness was a tad too strong. But seeing Chi Shuyan on the verge of tears, he was immediately at a loss and consoled, “Okay, okay, no one else, there’s no need to cry.”
Chi Shuyan’s tears turned into laughter and she loosened up. She felt a bit sleepy and yawned. This body was really too weak, but she was still clutching Chi Lingyan as if she was afraid he would run away.
“Sleep if you’re sleepy.” Chi Lingyan lowered the pillow for Chi Shuyan and brushed her messy hair to the side of her face.
Chi Shuyan nodded and gave him her full attention, with the love and attachment of a child clearly visible in her eyes.
“Come on, Dad will be here with you. Close your eyes.” Chi Lingyan rested his right hand over Chi Shuyan’s eyes, both happy and distressed. He was happy that his daughter, who had always alienated and rejected him, was now clinging to him affectionately. But at the thought that his daughter suffered so much evil, he felt heartbroken. A glint of sharpness flashed in his eyes. This had better not be artificial, otherwise, he would never let go.
Chi Shuyan felt drowsy and drifted off to sleep again. When she woke up, there was nobody around her. Chi Shuyan scanned the room in panic. Could it be that seeing her father yesterday was all a dream? It wasn’t until she touched the white jade pendant around her neck that she calmed down a bit.
Without wearing her shoes, she got out of bed and pushed the door. Then, she walked towards the right side of the corridor.
“Damned bastards, I’m gonna f*ckin’ kill them! They dared to treat my daughter like this.” A furious voice echoed from a stairwell. Chi Lingyan had doubts about his daughter’s inexplicable fall into the reservoir. When he sent his subordinates to investigate and heard that it was a prank connived by several people, and also that his daughter was being bullied at school, he roared like an enraged lion.
“Go back to the army? What? Go back? What kind of bullying has my daughter gone through? I’m gonna f*ckin’ kill them!” Chi Lingyan, who was gripping the phone, sensed a presence out of the corner of his eye. He was about to scowl back, but when he saw at a glance that it was his daughter, he was instantly flabbergasted. He attempted to curb his murderous appearance and put on the kind and benevolent fatherly look, but unfortunately, the contrast between the two was too great that he couldn’t work out switching his expressions. Instead, it resulted in a distorted look.
“Sweetie, why didn’t you put on your shoes, you’ll catch a cold.” Chi Lingyan also knew that he was powerless to turn back the clock and was exposed, so he could only change the subject stiffly. He knew his daughter was afraid of him, so he never dared to lose his temper in front of her for fear of scaring her.
Watching her father’s face at this moment, Chi Shuyan only thought that her father was funny and cute. Why did she ever think he was scary before? Even though her father was tall, brave and fierce, he loved her unconditionally. He might have been mean to anyone, but never to her.
In the afternoon, the doctor came to check her again and ascertained that Chi Shuyan’s body was fine, so she could be discharged and sent home to recuperate.
In the car.
“Sweetie, I’ll take you to your Third Aunt’s house first. I still have some things to take care of.” Chi Lingyan informed her, “Your aunt stewed ginseng chicken soup for you, so you need to recuperate at home.”
Chi Shuyan raised her eyebrows and was about to refuse, but when she saw that Chi Lingyan left no room for arguments, she lowered her eyes and nodded: “Hmm.” It was a no brainer that what her Dad was going to deal with later had to be related to her. He was not at ease leaving her alone in a cold home and feared that no one would take care of her. Unbeknownst to him, he was delivering a sheep into the tiger’s den. Her Third Aunt was like prickly stubble.
They drove to Chi Guihua’s house. Chi Lingyan took his daughter and thanked Chi Guihua’s family for taking care of her.
“Fourth Uncle, Fourth Uncle, did you bring us presents?” Chi Guihua’s two younger children, her second son, Gao Yuanyang, and her third son, Gao Yuanxin, both greeted. Gao Lingxue also looked over and just crossed her hands over her chest, her expression somewhat cold and arrogant.
Chi Lingyan grinned broadly and generously gave three red envelopes to each of the three children.
“Look at you, you’re still giving red envelopes to the children. We’re all family and it’s only right for us to take care of Yan Yan,” said her aunt’s husband, Gao Han, but he made no move to stop his generosity.
“Look at this little skinny face, you’ve really suffered. I have specially made you ginseng chicken soup.” Chi Guihua feigned distress and attempted to take Chi Shuyan’s hand, but she dodged away. Chi Guihua’s face stiffened a bit and she gritted her teeth. This silly little girl, did she think she wouldn’t dare to do anything to her with her father present? But still, she forced a smile and faced Chi Lingyan. Her sharp eyes caught sight of something in his hand, and she quickly asked, “Brother, what are you carrying?”
“Softshell turtle, Sister. Please stew it for Yan Yan, she has been pale these past few days.”
“Gee, look at that turtle head, it must be some years. What a real treat.” Chi Guihua was surprised and delighted when she took it over. This kind of turtle was so expensive and she would never buy one. Her brother seemed to have a lot of money still left in his pockets. She calculated loudly in her heart, but kept her smile and said: “Don’t worry, Brother, I’ll stew this tonic for Yan Yan.”
Chi Guihua said so, but deep inside, she thought that giving this tonic to this damned Chi Shuyan was simply a waste. Better let her two young sons have it.
Chi Shuyan looked at Chi Guihua’s excitement and thought that her two sons would definitely end up eating the cooked turtle.
Chi Lingyan gave Chi Guihua an account of everything and left in a hurry.
“Go back to your room and don’t just go wandering off. Give me anymore trouble and I’ll break your legs.” As soon as Chi Lingyan left, Chi Guihua’s smile disappeared and she ordered somberly.
“Hey, Guihua, don’t talk to the child like that. Look, you’ve scared her.” Gao Han said, “Yan Yan, your aunt is only doing it for your own good. She’s been worried about you these days, so hurry back to your room and don’t run around.”
Chi Shuyan looked deeply at Chi Guihua and Gao Han, but didn’t speak. She turned around and went upstairs, pausing deliberately at a corner.
“This kid is so gloomy all day long—she’s really bad luck. Don’t show any hands in front of your brother these days and try to be as nice as you can. You have the final say when he’s gone. By the way, you proposed earlier to move to their house, did brother-in-law agree?”
“Don’t worry, I’ve already told him. Brother said he still needs to consider it. I will press harder to urge him. Just from the way he dotes on that worthless girl, I’ll make a serious case for his worthless daughter again, and he’ll certainly agree.” Chi Guihua grinned triumphantly.
“That’s good, their house is worth a lot now, if…” Gao Han deliberately drew close to Chi Guihua’s ear and whispered.
Chi Shuyan sneered. She still couldn’t figure out before how such a clumsy one played the villain while one played the good cop in a big drama. Now, it was very clear.
