Chapter 509 - Fandel
The capital city of Fandel was unlike anything she had ever seen before. The streets were filled with many demi humans walking back and forth, shopping and dining at their leisure. Unlike the other places where demi humans were in low numbers, here it seemed humans were the minority. But this was not the only shocker, the place could really be called out of this world with its tall buildings that you had to crane your neck just to see the tops of. And in the sky, high above, were flying ships with strange white sails that acted as wings steadily flapping every so often as they flew effortlessly through the air.
The city itself seemed to be the most advanced one Kana had seen thus far. And to her side, Bell was also looking on in awe. The city also seemed fairly safe as there were guards posted at basically every street corner and also patrols that wandered the streets. Normally in situations like this, it was due to an overbearing ruler who wanted to control their people by fear and force. But from the looks of the passersby's faces, they showed no fear of the guards. Some even greeted them joyously and even offered them some free goods.
Each building was made of brick and mortar and seemed sturdy and solid. And in front of these buildings were small stands that sold all kinds of goods, from small items for everyday use to food of all kinds.
"Mama, this city is very…" Bell was at a loss for words since she had never seen such a place like this before.
"It does seem amazing, but we should still be careful. There is no telling just what we will run into. While it seems safe on the outside, it may have its own dark spots as well. " Kana looked at the back alleys and for some reason felt a shiver run up her spine. She felt like she had once been in such a place struggling to survive. Why this was so, she did not know, but from the feeling deep within her, she wanted to stay clear of such places if she could.
"Mmm… I will be careful. We should find an inn and look for information. You wanted to find out about my thirst issue, right?" Bell asked.
"Yeah. You have been getting hungrier faster to the point that now you need blood twice a month. If this keeps going on, you will end up needing blood every day." Kana sighed. She did not want Bell to turn into some blood crazed monster.
"Mmm…" Bell nodded her head. She was a little scared of this fact. Right now, she was fine because it was only two days a month, but if it continued to where she needed it every day, her mama would not be able to keep giving her blood like she was.
The two walked around for a while, looking for an inn. After a while of searching, Kana finally asked a street stall owner where she could find one who happily pointed her in the right direction.
The inn itself seemed to be top notch. Kana was worried the little bit of money she had on her would not be enough to rent a room, but luckily this was not so. While the place looked fancy, the prices were unexpectedly very cheap. Kana went to the room with Bell and settled her in before saying: "I will go ask around about vampires. For now, stay here. Do not open the door for anyone. Only I will have the key. If someone enters and it is not me, just kill them and run away, got it?"
"Mmm… I will kill them if they are not you." Bell nodded her head. This had been their rule of thumb since they started this journey when they stayed at inns. Kana did not trust anyone. She always seemed to fear the worst and always went with killing before asking questions method. Her fears were not uncalled for because they have had their inn door broken into before and people trying to sneak in, in the middle of the night.
Two years' worth of travel had taught the two many things. That there were many good people in the world, but at the same time, there were many bad. As the two were both pretty and young, many with not so kind thoughts wanted to take advantage of their youth to commit unspeakable deeds. Sadly for those who tried, they all ended up dead.
After leaving the room and making sure the door was locked, Kana went down to the lobby and to the receptionist desk to ask for directions to a library if there was one. Luckily in this large city, they did have what was called the grand library. It was about an hour's walk away, but this was the place Kana wanted to begin her search. Instead of asking around about vampires, she hoped to get proper answers from a book rather than word of mouth. This is why she headed to the library first.
The library was a three story building with more open surroundings around the building compared to the tall highrises that surrounded it. It seemed to be a place that was held in high esteem within the city. Kana made her way up the long staircase that had at least thirty steps in total and stood before the grand doors that seemed tall enough for even a giant to fit through. She walked up and pushed the door open, and entered the building.
What befell her eyes were rows upon rows of shelves, each one packed with books. Even the counter to the side had books stacked on top of each other. But surprisingly, for such a grand place, there did not seem to be many visitors. Kana wondered if maybe it was an off time for them. Whatever the case may be Kana walked over to the counter to find a young girl with cat ears sitting or more snuggled up into a pile of books sound asleep… Seeing this cat girl made tears well up in Kana's eyes…
