“The New Age was given this name because it signaled the change to a new age!” Gilian sat down, and Dark auras surrounded both of them. This could prevent the dragon eggs from detecting them. She continued saying, “Humans have limited lifespans, but they always felt that they can remain in their prime for eternity, and hence they named their reign as The New Age. However, what they don’t understand is this: eternity never existed for anyone. Perhaps after a thousand, ten thousand, or hundred thousands of years, the human civilization will come to an end!

“There will always be a group of beings who will live to see the change of the different reigns. These group of beings will either be forgotten or survive through times with their natural or supernatural powers. In fact, they may even become the crux of the new reigns and manipulate the whole world to change according to their wishes. These beings will then be known as the Heroes!

“The New Age created by the human beings which we see now is an oddity among all the various reigns. How can the weak humans ever become the true rulers of these beautiful lands? If one studied the history, one can see plainly that all those who ruled previously were either the Dragons, Elements, or Devils, and all of them had one thing in common—they are powerful races!

“The reason why humans managed to become the rulers of this new reign was due to the appearance of a mysterious race when the world was about to erupt in the flames of war—the Gods! They claimed to be the pioneers and the creators of this world!

“There were only 12 Gods around. They were enshrouded in Holy Light, and though they gave off amiable vibes, no one could resist their words or rebel against their orders. One of them held double swords in his hands, and fend off the formidable combined attacks from the Devils and Dragons single-handedly! He hence won the respect of all, and he made all the races sign a contract... Ah!”

The back of Gilian’s head suddenly exploded, and dark-red blood spurted out!

Lin Jie’s pupils constricted—this was a system punishment! If one wanted to use more fancy terms, this situation could be described as a heavenly oracle or sign... In Lin Jie’s previous life, he had been familiar with all kinds of hidden histories, but those had been mostly about stuff like the Holy Church’s devious schemes to conquer the lands, the conflicts between the Holy Church and the Empire, etc... Yet Gilian now was rattling off generously and revealing all the hidden, restricted secrets of The New Age’s beginnings—it was already considered lucky that she wasn’t deleted straight off from the game immediately!

In Lin Jie’s previous life, players could often discover large amounts of abandoned ancient sites once they reached higher levels. The creatures inside those places were unaffected by the passing of times, and they were terrifyingly powerful—it seemed like all these had to do with the mysterious Gods!

“Gilian, that God who wielded both swords, do you know how he looked like? Are there any obvious descriptors—even if it was just some parts about his body? Or maybe about his weapons? Quick, tell me!” asked Lin Jie excitedly.

‘There are 12 Gods, and there are 12 Heritage items! This can’t be a coincidence—there must be some links between them!’

Gilian regained consciousness after a while. She blinked and asked in a puzzled manner, “Human, what queer things are you talking about?”

Lin Jie was taken aback by her reaction, but realization dawned upon him the next moment—she was being brainwashed by the system!

“Do you still remember that you are telling me some secrets?”

“Of course,” Gilian’s expression turned serious as she commented.

“What I am going to tell you now is the Secret legends of the Guild of Light and the Dark Shrine!”

Lin Jie’s heart flopped. It seemed like her memory of the beginnings of The New Age was being erased—what a pity! After all, it wasn’t easy to know the game’s history settings and creation myths. These were definitely much more interesting than the official history records which just sang praises about the Guild of Light all the time!

‘What a pity...’

“No one knew how the name of ‘The New Age’ came to be. It has always been known as The New Age since the world was being formed! The lands in our world were divided into three parts: the eastern lands which were being ruled by the Guild of Light. On these lands, there are plentiful resources, and the environment is great. They are ruled by human beings and Elves.

“Meanwhile, the Tribe of Darkness ruled over the north-western deserts. There, the environments are harsh, and there were many political conflicts among the Tribe of Darkness, including the Undead Kingdom which was enshrouded in darkness all day long and the City of War which was ruled by the Orcs!”

“The third part of the lands are the mysterious Domain of Planes. They connect various planes together, and our Heroes often visit these regions to train or catch creatures from the foreign countries.” (Domain of Planes refers to the place which could lead to the maps created by the foreign countries’ version of the game. There will be different types of lands, maps, and climates produced with every different version of the game across the numerous countries in the real world.)

“It seemed logical that the Guild of Light and the Tribe of Darkness will always be at war with each other—if you really want to coin a reason for this, you may say this is because they are always fighting to get the most resources for themselves. The leadership of human beings within the Guild of Light is always highly praised for because of two facts: Firstly, the power of the Holy Church and Imperial Soldiers...” Gilian raised up two fingers slowly, “Secondly, the antagonistic characters are always very sensible. They won’t kill people rashly, and every time they will be automatically defeated by those from the Guild of Light.”

Lin Jie rolled his eyes at this, “=_=!”

“No ruling class can sustain their reign just by maintaining peace within their kingdom. When it is too calm and non-happening, some ‘crisis’ will need to be made up to remind the people not to take everything they have now for granted. During those times of ‘crisis,’ the rulers will then appear as their people’s saviors, and hence once again secure their people’s loyalty. The Guild of Light naturally had employed this tactic before too, and their required ‘calamities,’ ‘disasters’ and ‘crisis’ comes from us—the Dark Shrine!

“I am sure you people from the alternate realms can feel the hostility the Holy Church has for the Dark and the Shadows. Just look at those abandoned Plague Cauldrons, Carrion Pools, Bloody Altars that were buried deep down—no Spellcasters or Dark Priests will dare to study those things openly, or else they will be punished severely. All this is because of the belief that the Dark is evil, the Dark can only bring fear and calamities—and hence, the Dark must always be expelled by the Light!

“However, not many people know that when Spellcasters or Dark Priests achieved some progression in their studies, they will be recruited by the Dark Shrine. They are employed to study about plagues and natural disasters. These Undead Spellcasters will be under the order of the Holy Church, and they will be sent to places which have the most negative comments towards the Holy Church! Following which, ‘disasters’ will befall on those places, and there will yet be another planned show of Paladins and Priests fighting to protect the people living in those regions!”

Until here, Lin Jie couldn’t swallow his doubts anymore and interrupted, “Wait, but in a lot of wars, the Guild of Light had suffered heavy losses, correct? I would believe what you said about the Holy Church putting on an act if they hadn’t suffered those losses!”

He snorted and said, “The Holy Light skills which Paladins and Priests own do afflict double damage to you guys from the Dark Shrine, don’t they? Have you ever seen people really dying just for the sake of putting on an act? Just consider the War of Modification which occurred 30 years ago. The 30,000 Paladins sent out by the Holy Church to get rid of the Dark Shrine’s followers who were experimenting with modifying the Undead, they were all killed in the end, weren’t they? Are you telling me now that all this is just for the sake of putting on acts?”

Gilian said calmly, “I am the Grand Commander of the Dark Shrine’s Spider Army which was involved in the War of Modification 30 years ago. Do you doubt my words about my own experience?”

Lin Jie was stumped... What a humiliating slap he suffered on his face!

“The reason for that war was because a massive explosion occurred in the Dark Shrine while carrying out the experiments on the Undead. Many of our comrades passed away in that explosion, and hence, a lot of positions need to be filled up again—even if those positions were being occupied by Revived Undead, which lost all thinking skills. Meanwhile, that batch of Paladins was the strongest army the Guild of Light had ever seen—they were unbeatable by all and worst, they swore their loyalties more towards their captain rather than the Grand Judge, Tyrrell! As such, they needed to be killed for their own sakes—and of course, we were also very willing to welcome this batch of quality Experiment Monsters.”

Lin Jie fumed. “What? Just because this team was strong, and threatened those in authority, they needed to die?”

Gilian nodded matter-of-factly. “Yes.”

Lin Jie: “...”

“Power needs to be concentrated within the ruling class, and hence, it was necessary to use certain methods to achieve this. For the rulers of a kingdom, this is a strict rule that cannot be unheeded by anyone.” Noticing Lin Jie’s unbelievable expression, Gilian smiled as she continued calmly, “I dare to say this, because... I am the Third Princess of the beginning rulers of the Guild of Light, Lady Archangel Anne! I had requested to my father, the king, to build my own free kingdom. What I did not expect was that someone attempted to assassin me the next day. I was being sent to the Holy Church to cure my wounds, but while they were helping to treat my wounds, they smeared Shadow Poison onto my injuries!”

Lin Jie was shocked. “!!!! You are Lady Anne? Didn’t you die in the battle against the Dark Shrine?”

“Yes, I—or Lady Anne—am indeed dead,” continued Gilian. “I lost all of my memories and was transformed into a Dark Elf. Eventually, I became a Lady Priestess of the Dark Shrine and changed to the name of Gilian. Every day, I had to cure those hateful enemies of mine who once tried to harm me... It was not until a few hundreds of years had passed before the seal on my memories finally faded away. However, by then, I was unable to turn back—and thus, I decided to take part in the Modified experiments, and became the Spider Queen!”

Lin Jie’s eyes gleamed. “So, the reason why you want to get the Demonic Dragon Crown... Is it because you wanted revenge?”

Gilian’s eyes had a faraway look in them. She said softly as if speaking to herself, “No, this can’t be considered as revenge, this is... just taking back what is rightfully mine.”
