Chapter 107 Madelline Wants to Jump

Nicholas sneered, “Hah! You don’t know? You even have the nerve to claim ignorance.” He continued. “I thought we came to an understanding the last few days, Nancy. We decided to do our best with this marriage and continue our lives harmoniously. I told you I wouldn’t ask for a divorce or marry Madelline, so why won’t you let her go? Why must you resort to such a vicious

and heinous act?”

His words pierced Nancy’s heart like a dagger. She was utterly innocent, clueless about what she was accused of. What had she done wrong? Try as she might, she couldn’t find her voice to respond. It was a cruel irony.

Nancy had thought he returned to see her when she awoke from her nap, and she had eagerly rushed to him, full of joy. Instead, he had greeted her with accusations, taunts, and coldness. She forced a smile, her heart chilling, and asked, “Why do you describe me as heinous and vicious? What have I done, Nicholas?”

“What have I done?” Nicholas chuckled and said sarcastically, “After everything that happened, are you still asking me what you did?” He glanced at the bed before sneering, “My, my. You had such a relaxing time. After making all the arrangements, all you had to do was sit and wait for things to blow up. You even had the leisure to take an afternoon nap.” He added, “It’s getting harder and harder for me to understand you, Nancy.” He tossed his phone onto the bed. “Take a look. See for yourself the wonderful thing that you’ve done.”

She picked up the phone and saw Twitter inundated with photos of Madelline’s life abroad. She was in shock and disbelief, thinking, How is this possible? I’ve torn these photos to shreds. Mom and Dad had even promised to respect my decision. They wouldn’t have posted these pictures online. Who did it? Who set me up?

Twitter was ablaze with news about Madelline’s private life, and the photos were everywhere. Nancy frantically looked at Nicholas, wanting to explain. “Ni-”

However, he cut her off with a cold, unforgiving tone. “Are you trying to claim that you had nothing to do with it? That you’re innocent?”

“It truly wasn’t me. She vehemently shook her head.

He clenched his jaw, staring her down. “You were at the house at noon. Dad gave you those photos, and they were uploaded this afternoon. Do you honestly expect me to believe you had no involvement, Nancy?”

It finally dawned on her that this was the reason for his anger. So, she retorted, “You’ve already conducted an investigation and decided it’s my fault, haven’t you?” She added, “You rushed home just to interrogate me, didn’t you?” Her voice trembled. She wished to explain, but he didn’t allow

her the chance.

“Nancy, you’ve played tricks before, and I overlooked them as they were minor. But this time,

you’ve disappointed me. Have you considered the harm you’ve caused Madelline? Even if marry her. I want her to find happiness,”

Nancy shot back. “How thoughtful of you. Are you, an ex-boyfriend, now responsible for finding her a good husband?”

“Nancy Nicholas spat out her name with growing anger. He stated, “The situation has escalated. Everyone’s attacking her online, hurling insults and criticism. Do you have any idea how harsh the comments are?”

Nancy may not have known what netizens said about Madelline, but she knew his reproaches pierced her heart.

Had he only cared about Madelline’s feelings? Her pain? Her suffering? Had he never considered Nancy’s pain and suffering? The answer was painfully clear.

For the past two days, Nancy had believed she was living a dream, everything feeling unreal and idyllic. Now, her dream was shattered, and she had to wake up. She calmly looked at the man. Why are you so angry, Nicholas? There’s a straightforward solution. If you divorce me and wed Madelline, everything will be resolved.”

She suggested, “You can explain that your vicious and cruel wife paid the media to slander the innocent and kind-hearted woman. If you both appear hand-in-hand to clarify matters, I guarantee no one will attack her anymore. I bet those slandering her now would bless both of you. She concluded, “See, Nicholas? I even thought of the perfect solution for you. Not only will you be free of a vicious and heinous woman like me, but you can also marry your beloved first love. You get to kill two birds with one stone! How great is that?”

With that, Nancy decided not to waste any more words and turned to leave. However, Nicholas refused to let her go. “Let me go!” she growled.

“Is this your way of dealing with the problem, Nancy?” Nicholas asked as he stared at her. He couldn’t resist a taunt. “You’ve been saying you don’t want a divorce, but aren’t you the one who secretly yearns for it, eager to run into another man’s arms?”

Her chuckle carried resignation. “You’re right. I didn’t want to admit it, but now that you’ve figured it out, I might as well confess. Do you think I should spend my life pining for you, Mr.

Sallow?”

At that moment, his phone interrupted their conversation.

Alice’s voice resounded from the other end, her tone frantic. “Nicholas, something terrible has happened! Madelline is missing!”

“Why didn’t you watch her closely? How could she disappear?”

“A bunch of people stormed into the hospital to berate Madelline. They said some horrible things. Madelline seemed unfazed and consoled me at the time, so I thought she didn’t take it to

heart. But, when I came out to get some water for her, she disappeared!” Alice was so distressed that she was nearly in tears.

“Search the hospital. I’ll be right there.” Nicholas ended the call and prepared to leave.

“Nick…”

Just then, Nancy called out to him. He turned around and saw her standing by the window. She had opened it, and a gust of wind swept in.

“What is it?” He frowned.

She gazed out the window, contemplating the two-story drop below, and then fixed her the man. “What if I were to fall from here? Who would you save, her or me?”

Nicholas stared at her sternly, cautioning, “Let’s not make such jokes.”

Her laughter was uneasy as she responded, “I’m not joking. I’m dead serious,”

Nicholas’ frown deepened just as another call came in.

It was Alice again, her voice laced with panic. “I found her, Nicholas! Madelline’s sitting on the edge of the hospital’s rooftop. It’s so dangerous! Hurry over! I’m so scared!” She added, “I’m begging you, Nicholas! Hurry up and save Madelline! You’re the only one who can save her.”
