Chapter 109 Something Different About Nancy

“Nicholas….” Madelline grabbed Nicholas’ hand with a pitiful expression. “Are you leaving already?”

“Since you’re fine, it’s improper for me to stay. It’s even more improper for me to stay overnight. I told you. I’m married, and you’re not. It won’t be good for either one of us if I stay here. Alice can accompany you.”

“Call me if you need something.”

As soon as Madelline heard that, she burst into tears. “You believe those photos, don’t you, Nicholas?”

“You think I’m a sl’t who goes around seducing men, don’t you?”

“Sob… It’s not true. Those photos are all fake, Nicholas. No matter where I am, you’re the only one I love.”

Madelline cried her heart out, but Nicholas only felt irritated..

He couldn’t wait to leave. He was worried about Nancy.

He shoved Madelline’s hand away and said curtly. “It doesn’t matter if they’re real or fake. I’ll help you suppress the news.”

“What did you say? It’s not important?” Madelline stared at Nicholas in disbelief.

Why wouldn’t a woman’s reputation be important to a man?

Don’t all men want a woman with a clean reputation?

He said it’s not important.

Does this mean he really doesn’t want me anymore?

“You don’t want me anymore, right, Nicholas?” Madelline looked up at him as tears streamed down her cheeks.

“I have a wife,” Nicholas declared solemnly.

“A wife?” Madelline scoffed. “How is she your wife? She’s just a pawn. Why are you willing to be with her instead of me? How am I not as good as her, Nicholas?”

“You’re great, but she’s my wife. I have to be responsible toward her.”

Nicholas abruptly remembered what Jacob had said to him.

“She’s just a young woman. She’ll be a divorcee without a job. Her mother died years ago, and she doesn’t have a single relative. Can you imagine what her life would be like if I divorced her? How

can she bear what others would say about her?”

It was true. Nicholas couldn’t imagine what it would be like.

“It’s getting late. You should get some rest.”

Nicholas left the hospital without hesitation.

As soon as he got into the car, he called the people back at the house and asked about Nancy.

They said she was fine. Everything was normal.

Nicholas was relieved.

However, when he got back and saw Nancy, he realized how abnormal the so-called normal was.

When he arrived, Nancy was having her dinner.

The dining table was filled with her favorite food.

Nicholas was hungry. After washing his hands, he sat at the table to have his dinner. Nancy sat on the left, and he sat on the right.

It was a large dining table, and the rift between them only made the table seem even bigger.

From the moment Nicholas stepped foot into the house till he took his seat at the table, Nancy didn’t even look at him.

She kept her head lowered. Her gaze was cool as she quietly ate from her plate.

She barely touched the other food on the table.

Even though there was a feast of mains and sides on the table, Nancy only took a few bites from the serving plates in front of her. She didn’t touch any of the other food. She didn’t even stretch her arm beyond her seat.

When she noticed that Nicholas had sat at the dining table, she started eating more quickly.

After seeing that she mainly ate the vegetables, Nicholas picked up a prawn and placed it on her plate. “You should eat more. You’re too skinny.”

“I don’t feel like eating prawns today.”

Nancy’s voice was crisp and distant. She continued scarfing down her food.

She didn’t even want to look at him.

What was the point of seeing his face? Nothing would change. It would only make her heart ache

even more.

“Have some fish then.”

Nicholas passed a fish filet to Nancy.

“Thank you,” she said impassively.

Nicholas continued to pile more food onto Nancy’s plate.

Nancy accepted it all without objection.

“I’m done. Take your time.”

Nancy set her cutlery down and went upstairs.

It was only then that Nicholas realized all the food he served her was piled neatly on the side of the plate. She didn’t take a single bite out of them.

“How much did she eat?” Nicholas summoned Peggy and asked.

Peggy sighed and reported, “Just half a bowl of salad. She barely touched the other sides too. She usually likes the clam chowder I make, but she didn’t drink any of it today.”

“I see. You can get back to work now.”

Nicholas filled a bowl with clam chowder and brought it upstairs.

When he arrived on the second floor, Nancy was gathering her pajamas and getting ready to take

a shower.

She jumped in fright when he first entered, but she soon composed herself again.

“Did you want something?” Nancy asked coolly.

“Peggy said you didn’t eat much for dinner. You like her clam chowder, right? I brought some up. Have it while it’s still warm.”

Nicholas was just as gentlemanly as ever, but his pleasantness felt like a mockery to Nancy.

“No need. I ate enough.”

“If you don’t feel like having clam chowder, I’ll tell them to make some other soup do you feel like having?”

Upon hearing that, Nancy strode over.

for

you. What

She took the clam chowder from him. The temperature was just right, so she drank straight from the bowl.

Soon, she finished everything.

Then, she eyed Nicholas coolly “Satished?”

Nicholas didn’t speak.

As he stared at her, an indescribable feeling emerged within him.

After what happened today, he sensed that Nancy had changed. She became more polite and distant with him..

In fact, it seemed like she didn’t need him as much anymore.

This feeling flustered him.

“I wasn’t trying to force you, Nicholas explained as he held the empty bowl.

However, as soon as he finished speaking. Nancy covered her mouth and rushed to the bathroom.

She threw up the contents in her stomach, but to avoid letting Nicholas notice anything, she locked the bathroom door and turned on all the taps to hide the sound of her retching.

Even though she felt incredibly sick, she didn’t want to use this to gain his pity or concern.

That would only make her seem more pitiful to herself.

Pathetic, even.

Once she stopped vomiting, she washed her face.

As she stared at her reflection, the hollowness in her eyes and iciness in her expression gave her the urge to cry,

She covered her mouth, but she couldn’t hold back anymore. She began to sob.

Still, she dared not make any sound. She merely cried in silence.

I was wrong. I was so wrong.

I shouldn’t have expected anything from Nicholas. I shouldn’t have been hopeful about this marriage.

I’m sorry, Grandpa. I really wanted to fulfill your dying wish and get along with him, but I can’t hold on any longer.

It’s too tiring. I’m exhausted.
