Nicholas’ kiss was scorching.

Nancy felt as if she were being consumed by it.

All she knew was that she couldn’t bear to be apart from Nicholas. She didn’t want to be separated from the man who held her so tightly.

“I won’t be gone for long. I promised I’ll be back as soon as I finish work. It won’t take long. We’ll go for hot pot once I’m back.”

“And my favorite desserts too. You’ll have to go on the merry-go-round and Ferris wheel with me as well.” The more Nancy spoke, the harder she cried.

He lowered his head to lovingly kiss away her tears.

“Okay,” Nicholas nodded affectionately. “Whatever you say, Nancy. Once I’m back, I’ll be by your side. We’ll do whatever you want.”

“Remember your promise. Don’t break it.”

Tears continued to roll down her cheeks as she truly didn’t want to see him leave.

Her reluctance burned brighter than the sun.

However, little did they know that some promises would forever remain unfulfilled.

If only she had known what was going to happen next, she would have preferred to die rather than let Nicholas leave.

If only he had known the future, he surely would have stayed by her side and never left.

But what-ifs didn’t exist in real life.

No one could turn back time.

There were no exceptions.

With a wave, she reluctantly stepped out of the car.

Soon, Nicholas and the car disappeared into the stream of speeding vehicles.

Nicholas waved back at her too.

However, they soon lost sight of each other as the car accelerated.

Nancy stubbornly continued waving in the direction of the car.

Even though she knew he couldn’t see her, she still wanted to bid him a proper farewell.

The car drove farther and farther away until she could barely see it. Nevertheless, she stood there and waved until there was nothing left to see. Only then did she enter the restaurant.

Linda was already waiting for her inside.

Linda waved her over immediately. “Over here, Nancy! I’m here.”

The soup and food had arrived, with some vegetables boiling in the pot. Linda even prepared the sauce Nancy liked.

Nancy’s heart warmed at the sight.

“Thank you, Linda.”

“It’s nothing. Come, sit and eat.”

When Linda noticed Nancy’s listlessness and lack of interest in the food, she couldn’t help but ask, “Is he gone?”

Nancy snapped her head up and exclaimed, “How did you know?”

“He called me a few hours ago. He said he had to go on a business trip soon, so he asked me to have dinner and go shopping with you. He told me to focus on you because he’ll be paying for everything. Do I even need to wonder when you look so down and distracted? He must have already left.”

Nancy nodded glumly. “He left right after dropping me off.”

“Silly girl, if you didn’t want him to go, why didn’t you ask him to stay? You could have used this as an opportunity to test his love for you. Maybe he would have stayed if you spoke up.”

Nancy rested her chin on her hand as she continued to brood.

After a few long minutes, she replied, “I don’t want to hold him back. He’s like an eagle. If I truly love him, I can’t bear to see him trapped in a cage. I don’t want him to think I’m someone who throws tantrums either.”

“You’re too considerate, Nancy. Sometimes, you have to be a little selfish. A few arguments are fine. Just be cute and see how he reacts.”

Linda’s words made sense to Nancy.

But she was afraid.

“I’m a coward, Linda. I’m afraid that if I ask him to stay, he won’t stay. Wouldn’t that mean I don’t mean much to him? I’d rather he go on a business trip. It would feel better. I’m such a failure.”

Linda didn’t know what to say to comfort her.

That was because Nancy didn’t know how much Nicholas loved her. She was afraid because she didn’t know how important she was to him.

In that case, Linda was even more,clueless.

“Let’s forget about this and focus on our food. The trip might not be so bad, after all,” Linda said.

“How so?”

“While you two have been married for years, things are different now. This time, you’ve just gotten together and are in your honeymoon phase. You’re more prone to impulsive moments of passion. This trip will test your love for each other. Plus, they say absence makes the heart grow fonder. When he returns, he’ll be filled with even more pent-up passion. You might not be able to handle it.”

As Linda spoke, her face turned red too.

Maybe it was out of embarrassment, or maybe it was just from the heat of the pot.

Either way, her cheeks were adorned with a beautiful pink flush.

Linda was surprised. “But you’re married, right? I thought…”

Nancy shook her head. “We were married before. This time, I want it to be different. I want to take it slow,”

“Okay. Either way, after this period of separation, he’ll definitely be burning with passion for you. So don’t be sad, Nancy. Besides, it’s not like he’s never coming back. Look on the bright side. You

have a feast of your favorite food in front of you that we have to eat soon.”

“Okay.”

Nancy nodded and joined Linda in savoring the feast before them.

The spices were strong and flavorful, but Nancy couldn’t shake the bad feeling she had about the whole situation. It felt like something significant and unacceptable would happen to Nicholas during his trip.

She shook her head and forced herself to ignore it.

After all, all she could do was hope for the best.

All she could do was pray that he would return to her side soon.
