Chapter 104: The Sky Below, The Sea Above
Chapter 104: The Sky Below, The Sea Above
"Ha?"
: Huh?
: ???
: What the hell is this?
: ????????
: What's going on?
: This makes no sense.
As I descended the stairs from the 59th to the 60th floor of the Nagoya Dungeon, the water suddenly vanished. Completely baffled, I turned around to see that, as if the world had flipped upside down, the water surface was now rippling above me, defying gravity.
I've explored countless dungeons, but I've never experienced anything like this. My mind went blank. The comment section is filled with question marks, and I'm pretty sure everyone watching stopped thinking at the same time.
"...What the heck is going on here?"
: I seriously have no idea.
: This is the first time I've seen Kisaragi-kun this confused.
: Well, yeah, if the water's floating above you…
: Is there no gravity?
"There is gravity… Tenko?"
'...There's no water pressure, and air is present. It seems we've left the ocean behind.'
"No, that's not what I meant."
It doesn't look like staying on the stairs will answer any questions, so I guess I'll keep moving forward. Even though we've exited the water, it's still dark around here, and I don't like it.
Proceeding cautiously down the stairs, I eventually reached what appeared to be a door at the entrance to the 60th floor. A door in a dungeon? I've never seen anything like this before. But I won't know anything unless I open it, so here goes.
"...It's so bright."
: What's going on?
: Is this a tropical island or something?
: So this is the 60th floor?
: What happened to the water?
: Look closer, it's still there.
When I opened the door, the blazing sun was shining down on me. Having just come from the pitch-black depths of the sea, my eyes couldn't handle the sudden brightness, and I had to shut them. It might take a few minutes for my eyes to adjust.
As I tried to get used to the light, I could hear the sound of gentle waves in the distance. Slowly, I opened my eyes, looking up to see a shining sun... and the ocean floating upside down in the sky.
"What the heck is up with this ridiculous dungeon?"
: I have no idea.
: The ocean is... floating above you?
: What even is this?
: I can't process this information.
: I can only laugh at this point.
: I've stopped thinking.
: Time to leave this to the theorists.
: Are there even theorists watching this stream?
No matter how many times I blinked, the sea floating above me didn't disappear. It wasn't like a mirage or something faintly visible; it was definitely there, solid, but no water droplets were falling. The sound of the waves was coming from above, which means... maybe there's a beach somewhere up there... in the sky.
And even though there's a massive body of water hanging over me, there's also a sun shining directly above. The sunlight is somehow penetrating the water, but it's lighting up this entire place… though I doubt that's a real sun, considering this is a dungeon.
"So you're telling me I have to walk through this empty space?"
: No, isn't it just that the ocean floor dried up or something?
: Look at all the limp seaweed, lol.
: Why is the seabed at your feet, but the ocean is overhead?
: This dungeon has so many mysteries.
: I knew the Nagoya Dungeon was weird, but this is on another level. I didn't expect it to be this insane.
: Come on, laugh, viewers! No one's seen a dungeon like this before.
Yeah, I bet no one has ever seen anything like this. Sure, there have been some crazy dungeons before, but I've never seen one this absurdly otherworldly.
"But you know, I think dungeons are supposed to be confusing and nonsensical like this… oh, I'm talking about in games."
: Really?
: In roguelikes, it's not that strange.
: Some games do have weird dungeons, though.
: Recently, dungeon crawling has just been regular underground stuff.
: Is there a game with a setting this bizarre?
: Someone should make a game based on this Nagoya Dungeon.
: Any game developers watching, please make this happen.
"Yeah, a game where you make real dungeons even more fun could be interesting. If you need help with location research, just hit me up."
What games or novels need is just enough realism to keep things exciting. If you try to make everything too realistic, it gets boring. I think a game just needs a little bit of realism—just enough to keep you excited.
These days, game companies focus on making even magic feel realistic and theoretical, but who needs that? I'd be happy with some over-the-top magic like summoning meteors.
"Hm?"
I heard the sound of water being stirred above me and looked up… only to see a multi-headed monster diving out of the sea above, heading straight for me.
Before I could react, Sagojo and Kichijin leaped upward to intercept it.
: Is that a Leviathan?
: Why do people always call any giant sea snake a Leviathan?
: There's that game where you explore the sea and fight Leviathans.
: That game wasn't even made by a Japanese developer, though.
: It's funny how we're all freaking out about the environment, but no one's surprised by the monster.
"Tenko, you don't need to hold the camera anymore."
'Understood.'
Tenko let go of the camera, and it floated above my shoulder as usual, freeing her hands. Now she could focus on dealing with that snake.
There are five heads visible. If there were eight, I could've called it Yamata no Orochi, and if there were nine, it'd be a Hydra, but with just five... well, it's not really worth giving it a fancy name.
Sagojo and Kichijin each took on one head, while Tenko used water magic to attack another. That leaves me with the remaining two.
"I'm out of the water now, so I can finally use magic properly… alright!"
: Electricity crackling.
: You really like lightning magic, don't you?
What can I say? As a guy, shooting lightning is just cool. Between fire, wind, lightning, and ice, guys are more likely to be drawn to lightning or ice. At least, that's how I grew up.
When I fired lightning at the two heads coming toward me, they thrashed about in shock before crashing to the ground. The heads the shikigami were fighting were also slammed into the ground alongside them.
'It's fully descended now.'
The multi-headed snake that had lunged out of the sea above us had a thick body that split into five heads midway down. Judging by the way it came straight for us, this thing might be the boss of this floor.
Since there's no information about this dungeon, I'm figuring everything out as I go.

: That boss looks weak.
: It at least looks intimidating, though.
: But it got knocked down in the first attack.
: A boss that gets instantly wrecked isn't exactly strong, huh?
: Kisaragi-kun seems stronger than the boss itself.
Well, I guess I'll just keep testing it out.
