Chapter 125: Forged in Battle
Chapter 125: Forged in Battle
With our gear packed, strategies reviewed, and a fresh set of high-end weapons, we gathered around the entryway to the Tokyo Metropolitan Dungeon the next day. Today was all about hitting new depths, testing both the team's mettle and their new equipment to the limit. There was an air of confidence mixed with anticipation—this was their first taste of lower-tier floors, where survival wasn't guaranteed.
We began our descent, with Asagao and Douman up front, leading the way through the initial upper layers. The team was more focused than I'd ever seen, each one moving with deliberate steps, even as Asagao, always the liveliest, kept the mood light.
"Nothing like a little dungeon stroll in the morning," she quipped, nudging Douman with a grin.
Tennouji rolled her eyes, but the slight smile showed she was loosening up too. Despite the challenge that awaited, there was an air of excitement. They'd all been waiting for this moment—the chance to test their skills and prove that they weren't just some average team scraping by in the dungeon world.
As we made our way through the first few floors, we encountered lower-level creatures, but their movements were already sharper, more coordinated than I'd seen from them before. Asagao darted forward with newfound agility, spear in hand, striking cleanly with every move. Her attacks were quick and fluid, a testament to the weeks of training we'd put in.
"You're faster than last time," Douman noted, impressed. "I might actually have to pick up the pace to keep up."
The chat was buzzing, keeping up with each team member's progress and commenting on every maneuver:
: Asagao out here like a pro!
: Douman better not fall behind!
: Did Asagao get faster, or am I imagining things?
: They're really in sync now. This isn't the same team from last week
We reached the lower floors, and the shift in atmosphere was palpable. The monsters here weren't the simple-minded goblins or trolls of the upper floors; these creatures were strategic, moving in packs and sensing our approach with an eerie accuracy. I could feel the team tensing, and I quickly reminded them to stay calm, to rely on each other.
"Tennouji, Douman, stay together," I instructed, gesturing for Asagao to take the left flank. "Remember, no one gets isolated."
They nodded, falling into formation. It was essential down here, where one wrong move could spell the end. I kept a close eye on everyone's movements, watching for signs of hesitation or doubt. But as I observed, I saw none. The training, the hours spent drilling formations, and the mental preparation were paying off.
A dark shape emerged from the shadows—a wyvern, flanked by a group of smaller, fast-moving creatures I'd encountered before: shadow lurkers. They were aggressive and used their agility to distract opponents, letting larger creatures swoop in for the kill.
"Shadow lurkers!" I called out, signaling Douman to raise his shield and Tennouji to take aim. "Focus on the small ones first; we'll get to the wyvern after."
Douman stood his ground, shield raised as the lurkers circled us, darting in and out of the shadows, testing our defenses. Tennouji's new short sword, crafted from the very bones of the wyvern we'd taken down, glinted in the dim dungeon light. With a swift motion, she slashed at a lurker that got too close, the creature vanishing in a puff of dark smoke.
Asagao leaped forward, her spear a blur of motion as she pinned another lurker to the ground. "One down!" she called out, the thrill of the fight clear in her voice.
The wyvern roared, sensing that its support was dwindling. Douman braced himself, preparing for the inevitable charge. The chat was already lighting up with comments, their excitement mirroring the tension in the dungeon.
: Douman better hold that shield!
: Asagao's on fire today!
: Tennouji's going in with that new blade!
: This team has come so far
The wyvern launched itself toward us, its wings spread wide as it barreled through the air. Just as it was about to reach Douman, he raised his shield, taking the brunt of the blow and skidding back several feet. Tennouji and Asagao took advantage of the momentary pause, flanking the wyvern and targeting its weaker joints.
"Now!" I shouted, giving them the signal. Tennouji and Asagao struck simultaneously, their weapons digging into the wyvern's scaly hide. It roared in fury, twisting to shake them off, but Douman held his ground, his shield firmly planted. The creature lashed out, its tail whipping dangerously close, but the team moved with precision, dodging each attack with practiced ease.
The fight was intense, every second a delicate balance between offense and defense. But slowly, we began to gain the upper hand. The wyvern's movements grew sluggish, its roars weaker. In one final coordinated move, Asagao drove her spear into its side while Tennouji delivered the finishing blow to its neck. With a shudder, the creature collapsed, defeated.
For a moment, there was silence. Then, the team let out a collective cheer, their faces lit up with exhilaration and relief. They had done it—they'd taken down a wyvern in the lower tiers without any assistance. They had grown into true dungeon explorers, capable and determined.
The chat was exploding, a cascade of excited comments and celebratory emojis:
: THEY DID IT!
: That was insane! I didn't think they'd actually take it down
: Asagao and Tennouji are a dream team!
: Douman held the line like a pro—respect
I couldn't help but smile as I looked at them, proud of how far they'd come. This was only the beginning, but they were ready for the challenges ahead. We had conquered the lower tiers today, but the path to the deeper levels awaited.
"Alright, team," I said, catching their attention as they caught their breath. "This was just the first step. Get ready, because next time, we're going even deeper."
They exchanged determined glances, their faces resolute. We turned to continue our journey, the weight of the dungeon before us, but with the strength and unity we'd built, I knew we were ready.
