Chapter 182
I wonder if he got the wrong script— he’s supposed to be a boy from a rural area, not an overbearing president!
The days in autumn were short, but the cloudy and rainy days made it extraordinarily dark.
Lin Lan asked Maisui to light a lamp.
Erwang, “It’s still pretty early, we can light the lamp later.”
Maisui laughed at him, “Aren’t you a thrifty one?” He seemed to resemble the eldest sister-in-law a lot— not daring to use a lot of oil when it came to cooking, worried about wasting resources because he was afraid that their happy lifestyle would end. Actually, he seemed to be a bit more of a worrywart than the eldest sister-in-law.
“Shouldn’t we have to live our lives carefully? Otherwise, we are definitely going to regret it when the time comes. By then, it would be too late to be thrifty.”
!! According to the original plot, Erwang was supposed to be a slick player that only knew how to spend money and enjoy the luxuries of life. How the heck did I raise him to become this proper?
Or am I just overthinking things?
“Erwang, it’s okay. If you light the lamp up for one person, that would indeed be a waste. But because we have so many people with us now, there’s no harm in lighting the lamp.”
Erwang heard what Lin Lan said and very reluctantly handed the matches in his pocket to Maisui. Since Erwang would usually roast and eat whatever he caught, such as fish or bugs, he would always take the matchbox at home and use it on his excursions.
Soon, it was approaching dinnertime. They were no longer fed minimally by Old Lady Han anymore. Not only did Lin Lan allow her children to eat their fill till satisfaction, she also insisted that they ate nutritious foods as it was crucial towards their growth.
Zhang Caihong gave her a large pumpkin before. With dark green skin but a long and thick body, the vegetable weighed a full ten pounds.
Lin Lan had Erwang bring the water to a boil as she cut the pumpkin into long and thin pieces. Then, she stirred a spoon of flour with water to make some finely chopped gnocchi. She heated the pan and added a few drops of oil before throwing a small handful of chopped green onions in the pan. When the fragrance was emitted, she poured the sliced pumpkin in and fried it before adding some water. She tossed the gnocchi into the pot when the water boiled and placed the pancakes onto the grates for heating.
There were pickled vegetables accompanied by a serving of farmhouse sauce and also some shrimp skins. With such a lavish meal, the children ate fervently.
After working a bit when they finished their dinner, Lin Lan heard the radio announcers inform that it was already 9 o’ clock at night. Hence, she ushered the children to wash up and turn in.
It was still raining outside and amidst the pitch-black darkness, it was impossible to even see one’s five fingers in front of the eyes. On such days, children would go to bed without receiving any form of beatings since it was already too dark for their liking to venture outside past their bedtime. In addition, the food had been distributed and even the patrolling of the village was reverted to normal.
Since there were no grains to watch, the limited patrol personnel had to be dispatched to the surrounding fields to keep an eye on the corn, peanuts and sweet potatoes. Hence, the patrol guards were deemed to be not needed in the village.
…
Amidst the darkness, several figures sneaked into the village.
“Liu Chunhe, have you done the research properly?”
“Brother Zhao, don’t worry. I have told you many times that their family lives at the brigade. It’s pretty quiet there.”
