Chapter 10: Request (3)

After looking around the supermarket for a while, Luke found a bag in which he could carry on his waist. It would be perfect for carrying some sweets to restore energy fast and potions. That being said, the drop rate of those was relatively low…

“Luke, can I ask you a favor?” Rina asked.

“Is it related to the goals your guys have in this world?” Luke asked.

“More or less… I have a friend of mine who is apparently having a hard time in the residential area, can you help them?” Rina asked.

“A friend of yours? Another elf?” Luke frowned.

“Yes, I told you that I wasn’t the only one of my species who came to this world,” Rina replied.

“Same here,” Shalia added.

“What… and here I was thinking that I was kind of special…” Luke said and then sighed.

“You can see both of us, so you are special… in a sense,” Rina frowned slightly. “You don’t have strong beliefs about anything.”

Luke facepalmed. That wasn’t special… It was him just trying to avoid getting himself involved in troublesome matters. In any case, helping individuals that might enact change in the world might come in handy for Luke, and since it was one that was being helped by an elf, it was probably someone extremely naive or idealistic, so Luke was confident that such an individual wouldn’t cause trouble for him.

“You are to think Whatever you want, but at least try to pretend that you aren’t going to help just because it might be convenient for you,” Rina said, looking a bit displeased.

“It is better to be helped by someone who clearly wants something than someone who apparently doesn’t,” Shalia said.

A few minutes of rest granted Luke the chance to recover all his energy. While the bones were hurting a little, the pain was bearable. Besides, Luke had to use that chance to get stronger while troublesome monsters don’t appear too often.

“All right, lead the way,” Luke said.

It would be better if Luke had a real weapon like a sword or a lance, but Stinger could work even with a kitchen knife. Luke just had to position himself well… he confirmed that when he left the supermarket and then found a zombie leaving a certain shop that sold hats. He ran toward the creature, and the zombie moved toward him. Still, then when the creature raised its arms to prepare the attack, Luke activated Stinger and then suddenly appeared with his knife piercing the throat of the zombie. Since he positioned himself well, the attack pierced the monster’s neck, and the inclined knife cut the skin easily until it reached the brain. This time, Luke pulled the knife before blood could splash on him. Thanks to his increased strength, he did it easily.

“Your aim is really good… strangely good,” Rina said. “Weapon Augmentation relies on your precision as well, and you never missed until now.”

“It must be thanks to the countless hours playing FPS games,” Luke shrugged.

Luke began to run toward North while looking to the sides. Strangely enough, his body was pretty light, and while he was using some stamina to keep that pace, the consumption was laughable. It was quite weird given that he had zero athletic abilities… Luke was so bad at soccer that even younger kids were picked before when he played in middle school.

“Say… how many of you came to this world?” Luke asked.

“A few thousand,” Rina said.

“Same here,” Shalia said. “Why do you ask?”

“I was just wondering… is this the first time your species has done this? Help another species?” Luke asked. “Does your help actually make a lot of difference?”

“Ouch… I will apply some cold water in the burned area,” Shalia said.

“It sometimes does, it sometimes doesn’t,” Rina replied. “Most of the time, things work well in the beginning, but after a while, the members of the species begin to change. Their ego began to affect their decision making and thus caused fights and early deaths of promising individuals.”

“We also lose our influence if our partners begin to change their mind,” Shalia added. “If they get tired or regret their actions, then our powers don’t help them as much as before.”

“Well, in your case, things will be a bit different,” Rina said.

Luke nodded. He knew that if he changed his mind about something, he still would obtain the help of one of them. Regardless, it was quite weird that such a thing would happen… actually, it wasn’t. He could imagine idealistic people changing upon experiencing a situation like that. Still, for a cold and egotistical person to change as well… Luke couldn’t even imagine what had to happen for such a change to occur.

Luke stopped thinking about things like that because the smoke was getting too thick, and the visibility was getting worse pretty fast. Weirdly enough, the smell of smoke wasn’t that strong…

“it isn’t just smoke…” Luke furrowed his eyebrows as he slowed down.

“You are right, there is a lot of magic in this area… it is a mix of smoke and magical mist,” Shalia said.

“It is quickly spreading across town… some troublesome species must have spawned,” Rina said.

Although Luke had slowed down. He heard gunshots pretty close from him. He immediately crouched down to avoid trouble… in that mist, anyone could be mistaken for a zombie, after all. Luke began to move almost while crawling on the ground, but he soon had to get up when he heard some grunts approaching. Five zombies suddenly appeared ten meters away from him.

“Just my luck…,” Luke said while he grabbed an extra knife to fight.
