Chapter 84: Anger (4)
Luke thought that the zombies would have thinned out more than a little bit upon arriving at their next destination. Still, the pile of bones and corpses created by the Red Fangs wasn’t that big… while they could use Body Slam and Flamethrower against the fat and nimble zombies, they could only do so much with 50 of them.
“We should take one of them at a time in order not to be attacked by the zombies and the Red Fangs at the same time,” Chloe said.
Luke nodded. Everyone’s gear improved after the previous fight, so that should be something easy to do. This time, for real, he will only offer support with Spark Ball. Hopefully, his natural HP regeneration will make his burns disappear because they were starting to bother him more than a little bit with the smoke and sweat.
Although they planned to take the monsters one by one, the whole group moved toward the battlefield. They want to keep using the previous formation to avoid problems… when the Red Fangs noticed that a group of five went to face Luke and the others. Still, he stopped them with Spark Balls, and that gave a chance to the long-ranged fighters to bombard them with bolts and bullets. Maybe it was due to the confidence they earned in the previous fight, but they didn’t miss a single Shot…
The first group was completely decimated, so the second had been two times bigger. While that would cause trouble for their allies, the Red Fangs didn’t hesitate. This time, not even Luke could stop all of them… at least not by using Spark Ball level one. He used the level four version that was two times bigger, and so was its area of effect. The enemy that was hit was killed in a single strike, while the others were paralyzed for more than a second. That was pretty amazing… the only problem was the fact that Luke used forty points of mana.
Without any hesitation, the group stepped forward. Instead of waiting for their attacks, it began to bombard the remaining Red Fangs. One after the other, the beasts began to fall, and since they couldn’t fight the zombies, the horde began to approach… while looking at that, the members of the group gulped nervously, while Luke sighed… that would be a long fight.
Luke thought a magical apocalypse would be many things, but he didn’t expect that it would be a menial task at some point… Still, defeating that horde had been one hell of a menial task since he fought mostly using Spark Ball. That gave his allies the chance to attack safely, but they weren’t exactly fast, and their power couldn’t be compared to Luke’s… when he got bored, he decided to pick his sword and fight, but when he did it… he didn’t even want to remember the pain he felt. When he used Stinger, his entire body began to burn, and he got dizzy… he had pushed himself too much. It was only obvious that someone wounded couldn’t fight…
In any case, after four hours of nonstop fights, the group finally decimated the horde on the southern side of the city. They could barely believe that they did such a thing… they leveled up many times while they were fighting, but that wasn’t something that could be done just by leveling up a little… Chloe and the others recognized that it was due to Luck’s presence. While he couldn’t fight up-close, his magic still allowed them to defeat dozens of thousands of monsters without getting hurt a single time…
Amidst all that, even Luke leveled up five times. Not only that, Spark Ball reached level five, and Pain Resistance leveled up twice… because of the pain caused by the burn marks. Tons of items were dropped as well, but none of them were useful to Luke. Again, he kept the potions and left the items to the others.
“Not a single skill book was dropped, huh…” Luke frowned.
“Instead of worrying about that, you should sit back and rest a little,” Rina said. “Tell one of them to drive that vehicle while you rest… sleeping is the best way to heal one’s body, after all.”
Luke was feeling a bit better, but Rina was right. He was in desperate need of a good night’s sleep… the sun had already set, though, and he didn’t feel like spending the night in Orlando.
“We did it… ” Chloe said. “You are something else, kiddo… Anyway, some of us want to pick other relatives we left behind to leave the city, is that fine with you?”
“… Whatever, just hurry up because we are leaving tonight,” Luke said while holding back his anger.
It seemed that people loved to put him in those situations where he would look like a complete ass if he disagreed with the others. It would be a waste if something happened to them, so Luke went with them after all that work. At first, Luke thought only ten or so people would join them, but then he saw twenty of them packing their things… how in the hell is he going to return to his vehicle now? They had to look for others… and that would only solve one problem and cause another: and that would be the fact that they will be easier to spot.
“Do you see now, Rina?” Luke asked. “Why would I want to play the hero when I know things like this are bound to happen?”
“Isn’t it fine?” Rina asked. “Just look at how relieved those people know that they can leave the city.”
“Only a moron would find pleasure in that,” Shalia said.
“… Help people, and they are bound to do the same to you in the future,” Rina said.
“I am not sure I can act while considering that. Besides, I am not the type who expects much from others since I don’t expect much from myself either,” Luke said.
