A lonesome planet slowly rotated on its axis with more than half of it exposed to the sun.
Unlike earth, it was mostly green vegetation and a few patches of brown from dry land. This was a planet named Seon, one of the planets supplying most of the federation’s food crops.
Because it had a lot of suitable conditions to grow a variety of crops it produced anything from wheat and rice to vegetables and spices.
Seon was a very important chess piece in the federation and it was because of this that it became a target by the enemy.
In the past two years, the Republic had changed strategies. Instead of attacking random cities, they had begun to strategically attack important planets by slowly infiltrating the system, and the final attack crippled the entire planet.
This time it was Seon under fire with the entire planet going dark and off the grid for an entire week. All the transport for granary and vegetables that came to Seon never returned and neither could the rest of the federation get in contact with the prime minister of Seon or the military base.
.....
The mission was simple. Rescue Seon and restore order. At the forefront of this mission were seven elite squads including Stygian Wyrm comprising of the elite future marshal, a revered genius who can hack into anything, two muscle heads loyal to a fault and last but not least the craziest Cadet in the military.
“You assholes just had to get Varanasi. Is this the halo of the future Marshal?” complained Shannon through the open communication channel.
Li Ran monitoring the mission from the COV cruiser chuckled as he leaned back in his seat. He pulled up the images of the sacred city of Varanasi and began to brag.
“A replica of one of the most sacred cities on old earth. A gorgeous sunkissed city that breathes divine bliss with close to a thousand temples. Oh and-,” he continued singing praises before Shannon cut him off.
“Will you shut the fuck up? You sound like a freaking tour guide,” she said the jealousy in her voice apparent.
“We are stuck with farmlands yet you guys get a beautiful city. This is unfair,” she complained while walking through a field of tall grass which made one feel itchy just looking at it.
“Shannon, stop fucking around and come over here,” was the sound of Hela’s voice beckoning her over thus cutting the communication line.
Li Ran pulled up the live footage from the drones and the mechs while taking a sip of his energy drink.
“It’s like a fucking ghost town. It’s like everyone just disappeared and left everything as is,” said Zain as they slowly walked through the deserted city with his weapon drawn.
“It feels eerie like there are actual ghosts. I feel chills all over my body,” replied Omari respectfully closing the door of a temple.
Zi Han who had heard ghost this ghost that for the past ten minutes was feeling tense his vigilance at an all-time high.
Slurp, slurp!
“I think there is nothing left in that can. Please stop,” said Zain referring to Li Ran who was sucking on his straw in the team channel.
“I will slurp to my heart’s content, deal with it... It is a ghost town. The drones have scanned through the entire perimeter and there is nothing, not even a single roach,” replied Li Ran that is before he got an alert that a worm was trying to infiltrate his system.
Li Ran smiled maliciously as he sat up straight. “This is getting interesting,” he whispered but no one heard him.
He dialed a contact and when the person angrily picked up Li Ran asked directly, “Crvena, are you trying to fuck with my system again?”
“You piece of @&#^^#&÷, I am going to !#&& and then @%!^@#&. Fuck off!” cussed and swore to Crvena before cutting the call.
Li Ran did it on purpose. Crvena had tried to hack him before but he failed miserably. After that Li Ran put him in his place so it would be a surprise if he became a repeat offender.
While Li Ran was setting a trap, Yi Chen was trying to coax his beloved who had been ignoring him for the past twenty four hours.
Yi Chen stood in front of Zi Han and asked, “Are you still mad at me?”
Zi Han who was still angry just glanced at him before walking past him. He was feeling tense because of the word ghost floating around but he would rather deal with a vicious ghost right now.
Yi Chen grasped Zi Han’s wrist and pulled him back but Zi Han drew his rifle resting the barrel on Yi Chen’s shoulder.
Anyone who had seen this scene would have thought Zi Han wanted to shoot Yi Chen but only Yi Chen knew that Zi Han had sensed something out of place.
His gaze fixed on Zi Han he asked, “What is it?”
Zi Han’s breathing quickened his chest rising and falling rapidly as he stared into the distance. His nerves only got even more tense the longer he stared. In front of him was nothing but abandoned temples and tall statues but he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was watching them.
There was indeed something watching him. It was a translucent spectre-like monster. It was so confident in its trickery that it wrapped itself around the barrel of Zi Han’s rifle while opening its mouth wide as though to take a bite.
Zi Han raised the corner of his lips in a sneer. For the past six months he had gone through every creature from the Republic recorded in Igneous’ archives.
If the Republic was truly shipping beasts from their own solar system to the Onyx federation then this could only be the deadly phantom or as they call it in their team, ‘Casper’.
Zi Han whispered, “Duck,” and as soon as Yi Chen moved away Zi Han pulled the trigger and a black shadow showed itself shrieking as the laser ripped through its misty figure.
“Watch your backs. We have Caspers on the loose. Deploy the svelare grenades,” said Yi Chen as he took out automatic grenades filled with an inky substance. The automatic grenades broke into several parts and soon a series of explosions rang in the air across the city.
“The fuck, there is a lot of them,” yelled Omari his voice muffled by the sounds of gunfire.
Zi Han stared at the creatures looking at him with stupefied expressions with their bodies covered in the black substance and he almost laughed out loud.
