Chapter 538

Brittany hit the power off button on her computer, then strolled into the kitchen and popped open the fridge.

Besides the ready-made chicken soup, the fridge was stocked with fresh fruits, breakfast fixings for tomorrow, and even her favorite

dessert

All courtesy of William.

He had always been so thoughtful

Brittany took out the chicken soup, heated it up, and brought it to the dining room to take her time enjoying it.

She was not really a soup gal, but William swore it was good for her health, so he always kept it ready for her.

Brittany finished the soup and was just about to get up when the doorbell rang.

“Who could that be?”

Who could be knocking at this hour?

Brittany made her way to the door. Peering through the peephole, she saw a man outside, reeking of booze and looking dead tired.

Isaac?

What was he doing here again?

‘Brittany, open up.”

Isaac knew she wasn’t asleep yet.

Brittany had no intention of opening the door as she said, “Mr. Salter, please leave.”

Isaac leaned against the door. This usually cold and proud man now looked years older, showing a fragile side. His voice was choked. “I miss you”

He was shivering, his eyes filled with exhaustion.

Brittany felt annoyed and even a bit scared for no particular reason

“Leave now, or I’m calling the cops!”

She wanted nothing more to do with Isaac!

Seeing her rejection and disgust, Isaac felt a pain he couldn’t put into words. He stood outside the door, silent for a long time.

Brittany dialed the emergency number. Before long, the cops were here.

“Sir, we received a call suggesting that you might have ill intentions. Please come with us.”

Isaac let out a quiet laugh, then turned and left.

Brittany’s rejection was like a bunch of needles piercing his heart, making his body shudder violently.

The next second…

“Bang!”

“Sin

Isaac collapsed. Even in his last moments of consciousness, his gaze was still fixed on the tightly closed door.

After the police arrived, Brittany let out a sigh of relief. She didn’t feel like cleaning up the dining table anymore.

She grabbed some fresh clothes and headed into the bathroom.

After washing off the day’s fatigue, she returned to the bedroom and saw a lit-up screen on her phone.

She picked up the phone and saw a message from Daniel.

“Mom, I miss you. Can I come see you tomorrow?”

The message was sent an hour ago.

Brittany hadn’t seen Daniel in a while and missed him too.

“Sure. Let your dad know”

Daniel didn’t reply, probably already asleep.

Knowing he would reply once he saw the message, Brittany crawled into bed and quickly fell asleep.

After a while, she heard some footsteps, like they were coming from a dream, but also real.

Brittany sat up abruptly. Her heartbeat was all over the place.

Brittany got up to check but heard no footsteps. She checked the surveillance and made sure no one was in the house before sighing in relief.

She returned to the bedroom and lay on the bed, but couldn’t fall asleep again.

Until, her phone buzzed.

She picked up the phone to see a message from Daniel, “Dad hasn’t been home for days. I’ve informed Granny Emily. Let’s meet up here later.”
