Chapter 698

“I will behave, I’ll study hard, and I will grow up to protect you.”

Daniel’s solemn promise brought a flush of emotion to Brittany’s eyes.

Leaving the hospital, Brittany decided to take Daniel back to her rural hometown.

When they arrived at Granny Dustin’s old place, it was already nightfall.

After five years, the yard was impeccably neat and clean.

Brittany was surprised.

After Granny passed away, all the servants had left. Who could’ve been taking care of the place then?

Daniel, still a child, was quick to shift his emotions.

Spotting the garden in the yard, he bolted towards it.

“Slow down,” Brittany called out, worried he might trip.

Just then, a passerby noticed Brittany.

“Ms. Dustin, is that you?” the stranger asked, approaching her quickly.

“Who are you?” Brittany didn’t recognize the man.

“You’ve forgotten, I guess. I used to work here. When Donna Dustin passed away, I stuck around in the neighborhood,” the man explained. He had a kind face.

“Hello.” Brittany offered a warm smile, “Did you take care of this yard?”

“No, not me. There’s a professional who comes around. I thought it was at your request.”

The man seemed surprised. For five years, someone had been routinely cleaning the yard. He and the other locals assumed Brittany had arranged it.

Brittany thought, “A professional cleaner?”

Brittany’s mind flashed an image of a handsome face, but she quickly dismissed the thought. It couldn’t have been Isaac.

Sensing Brittany’s discomfort, the man decided to leave her be.

Walking through the gates, Brittany entered the yard.

Everything was arranged just as Granny had left it. Even the lotus pond was teeming with life.

Brittany had brought along items for a memorial. She called Daniel from the garden and they headed towards Granny’s grave site.

Granny’s passing had been sudden. Her funeral was simple.

Entering the solemn graveyard, Brittany and Daniel approached Granny’s gravestone.

There were numerous offerings and fresh flowers scattered around the grave, a testament to frequent visitors.

Brittany placed some fruits and flowers, “Daniel, say hello to your great-grandmother.”

Daniel knelt, and called out to his great-grandmother in his small, childlike voice.

Brittany was touched by his understanding. After instructing him to bow three times, she allowed him to go play.

Brittany knelt in front of the grave and was silent for a long time.

As she was about to leave, she remembered Granny’s favorite dish, which was a pot of rib soup.

“Granny, these past five years have been tough.” She choked back tears, whispering her grievances. “Isaac and I are getting a divorce. He lied to me about your kidney and I ruined his career. We’re even now.”

A drizzle began to fall. Concerned about Daniel catching a cold, Brittany quickly got up, said her goodbyes, and left.

Back at home, Brittany handed Daniel some fresh clothes and instructed him to take a bath to prevent a cold.

Once Daniel was upstairs, Brittany headed to the kitchen. The house was empty and devoid of food.

After

a moment of hesitation, Brittany decided to drive to the local grocery store for supplies.

As she got out of the car, a pair of arms suddenly wrapped around her. The man was clearly drunk, pressing his body against hers, “I missed you. I missed you…”

His breath was hot and intoxicating, making her uncomfortable.

Recognizing the voice, Brittany angrily pushed the man away, “Isaac, it’s you again!”

He had the audacity to show up!

Her shove sent Isaac sprawling on the ground. He was too drunk to get up, and his bloodshot eyes stared straight at her.
