demanded, his voice laced with betrayal. He couldn’t believe that after all these years of being sharp as
a tack, he’d been played for a fool by Joie. “Or is this some misguided attempt at playing the saint?”
Cornered, Joie admitted, “Bro Isaac, I did deceive you five years ago, but I’ve just donated a kidney to
Grandma. Doesn’t that count for something?”
Isaac was floored by her audacity.
“In three days, I’ll arrange for you to leave the country. You’re never to set foot in Imperial City again.”
After Isaac left the hospital room, Joie clenched her fist around the glass on the nightstand and hurled it
at the floor, her face twisted with rage.
Isaac stepped out into the hallway.
“Keep this under wraps,” he instructed.
“Understood.”
By the time Grace woke up, it was already the dead of night.
Isaac had been sent home by Brittany to get some rest. He hadn’t slept in over twenty-four hours and
was running on fumes.
Brittany stayed by Grace’s side at the hospital. When she saw Grace stir, she immediately called for
the doctor. After a thorough examination confirmed everything was fine, Brittany heaved a sigh of relief
and adjusted the head of Grace’s bed. “Grandma, how are you feeling?”
Grace’s voice was hoarse. “Not too bad.”
The anesthesia was wearing off, and the incision was starting to throb with pain.
Brittany sat by the bed, dabbing Grace’s lips with a moist cotton swab.
Grace was weak from just waking up but didn’t want to sleep.
After wiping Grace’s mouth, Brittany spoke softly, “Grandma, you can’t eat just yet. I’ve made some
soup for you. Once you’re a bit more settled, I’ll help you have some.”
“You’re such a good girl.”
“Zac was up for nearly a day straight. I had to force him to go home and rest. He’ll be back soon.”
Brittany had already sent a message to Isaac, letting him know that Grace was awake.
“That’s good.”
Grace’s fondness for Brittany grew; she was proving to be a diligent daughter-in-law, worthy of the
Salter family name.
Isaac hurried back as soon as he heard the news.
Grace’s face lit up with joy upon seeing Isaac.
Struggling to contain his emotion, Isaac sat by the bed, holding Grace’s hand, and they exchanged
warm words.
Brittany, having stayed up all night, was feeling the strain. She stepped out of the room to clear her
head.
“What about Joie?” Grace inquired, still worried about her.
“She’s come around.”
Grace sighed in relief. “Give her some extra money to take with her.”
Her feelings for Joie were complicated. She had saved Grace’s life multiple times, and yet she had also
erred. As the only elder in the family, Grace had to strike a fair balance.
“I’m on it.”
The hospital was eerily quiet in the deep of night.
Two nurses were whispering at the end of a long corridor.
“Did you hear? A body vanished from the morgue.”
“Stolen?”
“They say it disappeared for a few hours and then turned up again with a new cut on the abdomen.”
The nurses murmured among themselves.
“Creepy, right? The guy died in a car accident, young too.”
“And the security footage got deleted. But they found the body near the operation room.”
“Let’s drop it. This is getting too spooky.”
One of them, seemingly frightened, stopped the conversation from going any further.
Brittany, unfazed, turned away and headed back to the room.
Grace had already drifted off to sleep.
Isaac stepped out just in time.
“Grandma’s asleep. Let’s head back,” he said.
Brittany followed him to the parking lot when suddenly, something clicked in her mind.
She pulled out her phone and sent a quick WhatsApp message.
