The other side of the phone responded, and Callum frowned. “Impossible? Aren’t you the so-called best hacker in Starhaven?”
Whatever the response was, Callum had lost his patience to continue the conversation. “Fine, if you can’t make this buck, someone else will.”
With that, he ended the call.
Callum’s brow furrowed as he pondered his next move. His phone had buzzed with an update that the reporters hadn’t managed to corner Lysander, and Lysander had made it back to Royal Estates.
The news wasn’t good. He knew Lysander would find out in no time that Thalassa and the kids were gone.
Knowing who Lysander was too well, Callum knew that Lysander would surely trace Thalassa’s escape route in no time.
If Lysander found out which way they had gone, they’d be sitting ducks.
They had arrived by plane, and while the road traffic wouldn’t give them away, Starhaven’s skies were blanketed with radar surveillance. With a simple radar check, their whereabouts would be as clear as day to Lysander.
Drowning in his worries, Callum was suddenly distracted by a tug at the hem of his shirt. Looking down, he saw Thalassa’s eldest son, his little hands responsible for the gentle pull.
The kid had the same striking features as Lysander, a spitting image, just pint-sized. Callum felt an instinctive twinge of fear at the resemblance but quickly remembered he was just a kid.
“What’s up, little man?” Callum asked, his voice softening.
“Callum, are you looking for a hacker? I can help you out.” Atticus said with an earnest expression, his youthful face belying the complexity of the task he was volunteering for.
“You?” Callum was astonished.
Atticus nodded confidently. “Yeah, I can hack into the security systems. I just need a computer.”
Callum was skeptical. The best hacker in Starhaven had failed, and now a four-year-old was offering to step in?
“Callum, my brother is really good. He’s a computer prodigy. He learned all about computers in preschool.” Dorian piped up in support of his sibling.
A twitch of amusement passed over Callum’s face. He needed a top-notch expert, not preschool proficiency.
“My brother’s the best, Callum. Please believe him.” Elowen chimed in. Her pride in her brother was evident.
“Atticus, I appreciate that you want to help.” Callum said with a chuckle, dismissing the notion as child’s play.
But Thalassa could see Callum’s disbelief. “Are you worried about Lysander tracking us through the surveillance footage?” she asked.
“Yeah.” Callum admitted, his tone serious.
“Please give Atticus a try. He’s a whiz with computers; he might be able to do it.”
“Really?” Callum asked, needing confirmation yet again.
“Yes, we’re running out of time. Do you have a laptop we can use? Please give it to Atticus. He can do it.” Thalassa insisted, her faith in her son unwavering. She had seen Atticus infiltrate Bruce’s devices and erase the videos that were being used to blackmail her.
It was because of that very deletion that she could flee without looking back.
Leaving Lysander was something she had longed to do but never managed. Today was an opportunity that couldn’t be squandered.
And they absolutely couldn’t afford to be dragged back by Lysander. If he caught them now, any future attempts at escape would be pure fantasy.
Moreover, she did not want to have any contact with Bruce and his family.
The best course of action was to distance themselves from all this strife.
Seeing Thalassa’s earnestness made it hard for Callum to believe it was a joke. He glanced between her and Atticus, and soon his astonishment gave way to acceptance.
After all, wasn’t it just a little while ago that he’d witnessed young Sophia confidently appraising the authenticity of precious stones? Now, if little Atticus was a computer genius, what was there not to understand or accept?
“I’ll get the laptop.” Callum said, heading toward the plane.
