“Okay,” Warren answered respectfully.

Matilda cooked four dishes and one soup for dinner, which was not bad.

The small square table seemed to feel more crowded than usual because of Warren’s participation.

While eating, Matilda said to Warren, “After what you did today, the entire neighborhood knows that you two are married now, so don’t do something similar in the future. By the way, the baby in Amelia’s stomach shall have the surname Haab. You don’t have a problem with that, do you?”

Warren’s eyes flashed slightly as he tightened his hold on his fork.

“No,” Warren said.

“Another thing. Did you discuss your marriage with your family before this?” Matilda asked again.

“I can decide my marriage myself. I’ll find the time to talk to my family about it soon,” Warren replied.

“Good. I don’t want your family to object and then seek out my daughter to kick up a fuss,” Matilda said.

Warren nodded. “Of course, I won’t let my family trouble Amelia.”

After the meal, Warren took the initiative to gather the dirty dishes and carried them to the kitchen for washing.

Matilda didn’t stop him, instead turning to look at Amelia and say, “This is how we’re going to handle this whole marriage fiasco. Now that our neighbors know about it, find an excuse to say that he often goes on business trips, so he doesn’t come back frequently. That should fool them.”

“Okay,” Amelia answered.

Meanwhile, Aiden slipped into the kitchen and looked at Warren, who was washing dishes. “Mommy said that even though you’re married, everything will still be like before. Is that so?”

Warren paused and looked at his son. “It might be the same as before for your mommy, but not for me. I will be proud to be your mommy’s husband, and this will be my most honorable identity.”

Aiden listened carefully, though he didn’t seem to really understand.

“Aiden, I really love your mommy, to the point I would gladly give up my life for hers,” Warren said.

“I don’t think so. If you love Mommy, you wouldn’t have treated her like that at the beginning. Mommy said if you really loved someone, you could never bear to make that person sad, not even a little bit!” Aiden argued.

Warren’s eyes flashed with pain. He put down the dirty plate in his hand, squatted down, and looked straight at his son.

His son looked like him in many ways, but his eyes were like Amelia’s. When the boy smiled, it made Warren feel as if he was looking at Amelia smiling.

Unfortunately, because of his recklessness and stubbornness back then, Amelia stopped smiling at him. Even Aiden didn’t smile at him anymore.

“That’s because your daddy is very stupid. I was so stupid for not realizing how deeply I loved your mommy. Now, I’m being punished for all I’ve done,” Warren said in a low voice. “Aiden, don’t be like me in the future. If you meet someone you really love one day, don’t be as stupid as me and hurt your favorite person with self-righteousness. You will regret it for the rest of your life.”

Aiden listened quietly. Even though he had hated his father all the while, at that moment, he felt none of that hostility. On the contrary, he inexplicably found his father to be a little pitiful!

The days passed, but ever since Warren made a huge show of their marriage, Amelia could clearly sense the way her neighbors looked at her had changed.

Perhaps that was just human nature. In the future, after she gave birth to her child and they turned one, she would divorce Warren. Then, once Aiden had to go to junior high school, she would move to another place.

At that time, a divorced woman with two children would have a better reputation than an unmarried woman with two children.

It was ridiculous as she didn’t care much about her reputation.

However, reality forced her to care about it.

Just as Amelia was thinking about what job she could do when her son graduated from the elementary school, a black Maybach stopped at the door of the shop.

A woman in a tailored gown exited the vehicle.

She was in her 60s, wearing a late-autumn cloak with her hair tied up and delicate makeup on her face. She looked elegant and was clearly from a wealthy family.

Amelia’s body trembled, for she had recognized the woman.

It was the matriarch of the York family and none other than Warren’s mother, Lydia York!

In truth, Amelia had only seen Lydia once before, and it had been an accident. It was back when she was still in a relationship with Warren.

At that time, Lydia was indifferent to her and didn’t seem to care about the relationship between her and Warren.

Later, when Amelia was in prison, she realized that Lydia must have known Warren didn’t really love her, so the older woman naturally did not care about her!

Back in the present, seeing Lydia walking to her, Amelia asked calmly, “Do you need something?”

“In truth, I should have come to see you long ago. Now that you and Warren are married, it’s time for you to call me by my name. Don’t you think so, Amelia?” Lydia said, her demeanor different from the indifference that Amelia had received before. Now, Lydia’s expression made Amelia feel as though she was trying to get in the latter’s good books.

Regardless, Amelia couldn’t bring herself to address Lydia with such intimacy.

Lydia didn’t insist, simply continuing with a hint of sadness, “You know, the York family and the Haab family truly are destined to be involved with each other. Back then, your father almost destroyed the York family, and Warren was hospitalized due to leukemia. I almost couldn’t hold on. I really hated the Haab family then. Yet, in a twist of fate, it was you who saved Warren. If, at the time, you had refused to donate your bone marrow like Irene, then Warren would have died already, and the York family wouldn’t have regained its former glory by his hands. You saved

Warren with your bone marrow while Warren donated his liver for you. The debts between us all have long grown unclear. I know that it was the York family’s fault you suffered before, and we did wrong by Aiden. Now, however, I don’t want to bother with all those anymore. I just hope that my son can live well and be happy instead of drowning in pain all the time with no way out.”

By the end, Lydia’s voice was pleading

When had a woman like her, who had been in power for a long time, ever spoken to anyone with such a tone?

Amelia was stunned. She didn’t expect Lydia to act in such a manner.

“Amelia, you are also a mother. You chose to marry Warren for the sake of the baby in your stomach, so you must know how I feel. A mother can and will do everything for her child,” Lydia said earnestly, unable to stop herself from grabbing Amelia’s hand.

Amelia was silent. As her mother, she naturally understood Lydia’s feelings, but…
