Chapter 11
Chapter 11
You Only Bully the Weak
One of the soldiers drew his sword as he bellowed, “Whoever dares to raise their voice again will be chopped into pieces and fed to the dogs.”
As soon as he said that, the other soldiers followed suit and brandished their swords.
Frightened, the villagers’ faces turned pale. They remained rooted to the spot and did not dare to move. They were only able to curse Zhao Chuchu in their hearts.
Meanwhile, Zhao Chuchu was taken to the inn located in town.
There were soldiers standing guard all around the inn and inside it.
“There is an epidemic going on. Are they not afraid that the plague might spread further if they gather so closely together?” Zhao Chuchu thought.
When she got off the carriage, the military officer escorting her to the inn asked coldly, “Can your prescription really cure people of the plague?”
“Epidemic diseases can be cured with a prescription. For other diseases, we’ll need to use the appropriate medication. I’ll need to check peoples’ conditions first.” Zhao Chuchu glanced at the military officer, looking very sure of herself.
Without waiting for the military officer to respond, Zhao Chuchu walked straight into the inn.
“We should avoid having people crowd around since there’s a plague going on. Do you want everyone to get infected in one go?”
“How dare you!”
“I’m being honest, yet you don’t wish to listen. You only bully the weak.”
When the soldiers heard that, they turned to stare at Zhao Chuchu.
The military officer’s face darkened. However, he knew he could not direct his anger at a girl. He could only vent his frustrations on his soldiers. “What are you looking at? If you stare again, I’ll gouge out your eyes.”
Zhao Chuchu suddenly turned around. “Where’s the patient?” she asked, her eyes blinking.
The military officer stiffened. After pondering his response for a while, he looked away, face flushed. “He’s upstairs.”
With that, he strode past Zhao Chuchu and led the way upstairs.
Zhao Chuchu let out a chuckle. The man’s bark was worse than his bite.
She followed the military officer to the room. The patient’s hair was white. Although he had a sickly countenance and his face seemed drained of blood, he appeared to be a righteous man.
Li Jiang was standing guard by his side. When he saw Zhao Chuchu, he said urgently, “General Gan’s condition suddenly took a turn for the worse. The doctor did not know how to help him. Chuchu, please go and take a look at him.”
Zhao Chuchu nodded as she gestured for Li Jiang to stay calm. She sat by General Gan’s bedside and checked his pulse.
The Wei Dynasty had troops stationed in all its prefectures. These troops were called Weisuo (5600 men). First, there was the Thousand Battalion (1120 men). Under it was the Hundred Battalion (112 men). The Hundred Battalion was further divided into platoons (50 men) and squads (10 men).
General Gan was the chief of the Thousand Battalion. There were around 50 soldiers in Lengshui Village. Hence, Li Jiang was likely the leader of a platoon.
The epidemic had spread rapidly. Even a skilled fighter like General Gan was not spared from the disease.
Fortunately, he was a strong martial artist. Since he was relatively healthy, his life was not in danger.
After Zhao Chuchu checked General Gan’s pulse, she said confidently, “I can cure him.”
The stern-looking military officer immediately asked, “Are you serious? If you’re lying, I will kill you immediately!”
Li Jiang hurriedly explained, “General Lin, if Ms. Chuchu says she can treat General Gan, I’m sure she can do it. She’s only a young girl. Please don’t scare her, General Lin.”
General Lin glanced at Li Jiang and snorted.
“What if I can cure him?” Zhao Chuchu shot back at General Lin. “What will you do?”
“If you can cure General Gan, I will bow to you and apologize.”
“Deal. Follow me to get the herbs.”
Just as Zhao Chuchu was about to leave the room, General Lin raised his sword to stop her. “Are you trying to run away?”
An exasperated Zhao Chuchu retorted, “My lord, how do you expect me to treat General Gan if you don’t let me go out to buy the herbs? Where do you think I can run off to?”
Perhaps General Lin realized that he had been too harsh towards Zhao Chuchu, as he withdrew his sword and followed her to the apothecary.
After purchasing the herbs, Zhao Chuchu proceeded to brew the medicine herself. When General Lin was not looking, she quickly added crushed pills from the space into the medication.
By the time she brought the medicine upstairs, General Gan had already woken up.
His razor-sharp eyes studied Zhao Chuchu intently like a hawk, regarding her with suspicion.
