The Demon Queen's Contract

Chapter 54: I'm a spy

Chapter 54: I'm a spy

"Can I come with you?" I asked, my eyes wide and hopeful.

Seraphina shook her head, smiling gently. "No, it's alright. It's something I need to handle alone. Enjoy the rest of your lunch."

I looked a bit disappointed but nodded. "Alright, if you say so."

Seraphina gave my hand a reassuring squeeze before standing up and making her way to her office. I watched her go, my mind racing with curiosity. What was so important that she couldn't let me tag along?

As soon as she was out of sight, I pushed my half-eaten lunch aside and leaned back in my chair, tapping my fingers on the table. I wasn't about to sit here and twiddle my thumbs while Seraphina ran off on some secret mission. No, I needed to know what was going on.

A plan began to form in my mind. If she wasn't going to let me come with her, I'd just have to follow her. And to do that, I'd need a disguise.

I hurried back to our chambers, rummaging through my wardrobe for something that would make me look inconspicuous. I found an old cloak with a deep hood that I could pull over my head, obscuring my face. Perfect. I wrapped it around myself, feeling like a character in one of those spy novels I'd read.

Looking at myself in the mirror, I couldn't help but chuckle. I looked ridiculous, like a child playing dress-up. But it would have to do. Satisfied with my appearance, I slipped out of the room and made my way towards Seraphina's office.

The palace was busy with activity, but I managed to avoid drawing too much attention. I crouched behind columns and ducked into alcoves whenever someone approached, feeling like a spy on a secret mission. It was actually kind of fun, and I had to stifle my laughter more than once.

As I approached Seraphina's office, I peeked around the corner and saw her talking to a servant who then disappeared down the hall. I pressed myself against the wall, heart pounding. When the coast was clear, I crept closer and positioned myself just outside the door.

I could hear her speaking with someone inside, but the words were muffled. Straining to listen, I caught snippets of their conversation. Something about a demon and ruins. My curiosity only grew stronger. What was she up to?

When the conversation ended and I heard footsteps approaching, I quickly ducked around the corner. Seraphina exited her office and headed towards the exit. I followed her at a safe distance, making sure to keep out of sight.

As we moved through the palace and into the surrounding forest, I began to imagine all sorts of scenarios. Maybe she was meeting another woman. My mind conjured up the image of a beautiful, mysterious stranger waiting for Seraphina in some hidden location. The thought made me laugh out loud, and I had to cover my mouth to keep quiet.

We traveled deeper into the forest, and I started to worry that I might lose her. The trees were dense, and it was getting harder to see her through the foliage. But I pressed on, determined not to give up.

Finally, I saw her stop at the edge of a clearing. She tied her horse to a tree and proceeded on foot. I did the same, hoping she wouldn't notice my horse nearby.

I watched as she made her way towards a set of ancient ruins. My heart raced with excitement. What was she doing here? I crept closer, making sure to stay hidden in the shadows.

As she approached the entrance of one of the larger structures, I could see her tense, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword. She was clearly on high alert. I crouched behind a bush, holding my breath.

Seraphina stepped inside the ruins, disappearing from view. I waited a few moments before following, making sure to be as quiet as possible. The inside of the building was dark and cold, the air thick with the scent of decay.

I moved carefully, trying to avoid making any noise. My heart pounded in my chest, and I could hear my own breathing. This was it. I was about to uncover whatever secret mission Seraphina was on.

As I made my way through the narrow corridor, I couldn't help but chuckle at my own ridiculousness. Here I was, sneaking around like a character in one of my favorite spy novels, all because I couldn't stand the thought of Seraphina keeping secrets from me. What if she really was meeting another woman? I pictured a dramatic confrontation, with me bursting in and demanding answers.

The thought made me laugh, and I had to bite my lip to keep quiet.

The corridor opened up into a larger room, and I could see Seraphina up ahead, talking to someone. I crouched behind a broken pillar, straining to hear their conversation. It was too far away to make out the words, but I could see the tension in Seraphina's posture. She was on edge, ready for anything.

I watched as she spoke with the figure, her voice low and urgent. My curiosity was killing me. What were they talking about? What was so important that she couldn't tell me?

Just then, the figure turned, and I caught a glimpse of their face. It was the spy from earlier, the one who had given Seraphina the information. My heart raced. This was serious. Whatever they were discussing, it was clearly important.

As the conversation continued, I tried to inch closer, hoping to catch some of the words. But I must have made a noise, because suddenly Seraphina turned, her eyes scanning the room. I froze, holding my breath. Had she seen me?

For a moment, our eyes met. I could see the surprise in her expression, followed by a flicker of annoyance. She knew I had followed her. I gave her a sheepish smile, hoping she wouldn't be too angry.

Seraphina sighed, shaking her head. She turned back to the spy, exchanging a few more words before dismissing him. As he left, she walked over to where I was hiding, her arms crossed.

"Elara," she said, her tone a mix of exasperation and amusement. "What are you doing here?"

I stood up, brushing the dirt off my cloak. "I was worried about you," I admitted. "I didn't want you to face whatever this is alone."

She gave me a long, hard look before her expression softened. "You're impossible, you know that?"

I grinned. "So I've been told."

She took my hand, leading me out of the ruins. "Come on. We need to talk."

As we walked back towards the clearing, I couldn't help but feel a sense of triumph. I had managed to follow Seraphina and uncover at least part of her mission. Now, I just needed to find out the rest.

As we walked back towards the clearing, I tried to piece together what I had overheard. Seraphina looked deep in thought, her brow furrowed with worry. I squeezed her hand, hoping to reassure her.

Finally, she sighed and broke the silence. "I was searching for a demon. He was causing trouble, and we managed to track him here. But he disappeared before I could do anything."

"A demon?" I echoed, feeling a shiver run down my spine. "That's... serious."

"Yes, it is." Seraphina's voice was tense. "And you shouldn't be here, Elara. This is dangerous."

I looked up at her, feeling a mix of guilt and defiance. "I know, but I couldn't just sit around and do nothing. I wanted to help."

She stopped walking and turned to face me, her eyes filled with concern. "I understand that, but this isn't a game. It's not like those books you read. You could have been hurt."

I looked down, feeling a bit chastised. "I know. I'm sorry."

She sighed again, this time with a hint of exasperation. "Elara, you drive me crazy sometimes. But I can't stay mad at you."

I gave her a sheepish smile. "I'm sorry for worrying you. I just... I care about you, and I didn't want you to face this alone."

She softened, pulling me into a hug. "I know, and I appreciate that. But promise me you'll be more careful in the future."

"I promise," I said, my voice muffled against her shoulder.

We started walking again, the tension between us easing. As we approached the clearing where our horses were tied, I couldn't help but giggle.

"What's so funny?" Seraphina asked, raising an eyebrow.

"I was just thinking about how ridiculous I must have looked sneaking around in that cloak," I admitted. "Like a character in one of those spy novels."

She chuckled, shaking her head. "You did look a bit silly. But I guess that's part of your charm."

I grinned. "Well, I'm glad I could provide some entertainment."

We mounted our horses and began the ride back to the castle. The forest was peaceful, the sunlight filtering through the leaves and casting dappled shadows on the ground. As we rode, Seraphina seemed to relax, her posture less tense.

"You know," she said after a while, "I can't believe you thought I was meeting another woman."

I blushed, feeling embarrassed. "I know it sounds ridiculous now, but my imagination kind of ran away with me."

She laughed, a genuine, joyful sound that made my heart swell. "You're something else, Elara. But I wouldn't have you any other way."

We continued to ride, the mood light and playful. As we approached the castle gates, I couldn't help but feel grateful for Seraphina's patience and understanding. She might scold me for my impulsiveness, but she always did it with love.

When we finally arrived back at the castle, Seraphina dismounted and turned to me. "Alright, let's get inside. And no more secret missions for you, okay?"

I nodded, smiling. "Okay, no more secret missions. I'll leave the demon hunting to you."

"Good," she said, wrapping an arm around my shoulders as we walked inside. "Now, let's go find something less dangerous to do. Like maybe reading one of those romance novels you're so fond of."

I laughed, feeling a sense of relief and happiness wash over me. With Seraphina by my side, even the most challenging days seemed a little brighter.
