Chapter 1 - I Must See Doctor Zander

Chapter 1 - I Must See Doctor Zander

"Sir, your daughter has to undergo surgery within three hours, but the operation is extremely difficult and there's only a 20% success rate, so please be mentally prepared!"

Upon hearing the doctor's words, Augustus Cross' legs wobbled and he sank to the ground.

20% success rate. It was not much of a difference than being handed a death sentence!

"Doctor, you must have a safer way, right? My daughter is only four years old. Please, you have to save her!"

Augustus was a grown man, but he was so anxious that he was reduced to tears.

The doctor sighed sympathetically. "She must have the surgery. However, if you can invite that person to perform the surgery, the chances of success can at least be doubled. It might even reach 70 to 80%!"

"Really?" Augustus was overjoyed. "Who is it?"

"He's none other than the dean of Halmont Medical Academy, Doctor Zander! If there's anyone in Halmont City who can save your daughter, it's him! But…"

"But what?"

"As far as I know, Doctor Zander retired a few years ago and won't be convinced easily. I'm afraid that even if you go to him, it'll be a wasted trip."

However, Augustus's gaze was firm. "For the sake of my daughter, even if I have to risk my life, I'll definitely bring Doctor Zander here!"

Forty minutes later, Augustus took the address given by the doctor and got out of the cab at the gate of Maplewood Villa.

Just as he was about to go in, the security guard at the door stopped him.

"Hey, what're you doing?"

This was a famous upscale residential area in Halmont City, and everyone here was well-dressed and traveled in luxury cars. People like Augustus who wore ordinary clothes and took cabs were naturally treated differently.

"Hello, I'm here to find Doctor Zander. It's really urgent. Please let me in."

"Sorry, but this is a high-end community. We cannot allow people to enter unless the owner gives their permission!"

The security guard raised his chin arrogantly.

Augustus was frantic. "Sir, I really need to see Doctor Zander! My daughter needs him for surgery. I have to see him immediately! Please help me!"

Augustus tried to go in, but he was chased away by the security guard.

"Help my *ss! It's none of my damn business whether your daughter needs surgery or not. Get lost!"

Augustus's eyes went red with anger. His daughter's life was at stake. How could this security guard say such ruthless words? He was terrible!

"I have to see Doctor Zander today. Don't try to stop me!"

Augustus pushed the security guard away and charged in, but before he could enter, five or six additional guards suddenly emerged from the guardhouse and blocked his way.

"Damn it, how dare you break into Maplewood Villa! Kick him out!"

Between the pushing and shoving, horns blared behind him. Seven to eight sports cars lined up and urged the guards to open the gates.

"F*ck, what's going on?! Good dogs don't stand in the way. Get out of my way!"

In a red Ferrari, a young man with ear studs and sunglasses cussed impatiently.

"I'm sorry, Young Master Zander. It's because this ignorant man is causing trouble here. I'll get rid of him right away!"

The captain of the security guard was just about to drag Augustus away, but Young Master Zander saw Augustus and froze.

"Augustus Cross?"

Young Master Zander got out of the car and walked over to Augustus, taking off his sunglasses.

"Jace Zander!"

Augustus frowned.

Jace Zander was actually Augustus's university classmate, but they were not on good terms. In fact, calling them enemies would not be an exaggeration.

Back then, Augustus accidentally saw Jace and a few others forcibly carrying a girl to the lab and was prepared to do something unthinkable, so he quickly stopped them and called for a teacher.

News of that incident spread like wildfire in Halmont University. Since Jace's family was rich, the incident was eventually suppressed.

From then on, Jace and the others targeted Augustus wherever he went. Several times, he went back to his dorm to find that someone had poured urine on his bed, and his student loan was also inexplicably canceled!

It was also because of that that Augustus, whose mother came from an impoverished family and was seriously ill, had to finally choose to drop out of university as a sophomore and marry into the Harrington family!

"Well, what a bloody coincidence! I didn't expect to bump into a jinx like you here!"

Jace's mouth was full of mockery.

At that time, the others had also gotten out of their sports car. It was the pack of scoundrels who followed Jace around back in those days. When they saw Augustus, they also started to ridicule him.

"Holy crap, isn't that Mr. Good Samaritan Augustus? What, you didn't finish uni so you came here to be a security guard?"

"A security guard? This is Maplewood Villa. He doesn't even have the qualifications to be a guard here! Hahahaha…"

Augustus clenched his fists and gnashed his teeth.

He did not get any reward for his courageous deeds, but these scum were living a well-off life. This world was really unfair!

Augustus did not have time to waste with these scums, but as he tried to leave, he was blocked.

"Get out of my way!"

"Don't rush. You haven't said what you came here for. If there's something that's making you unhappy, you can tell us and make us happy instead, hahaha…"

Jace was clearly wasting Augustus's time on purpose because he could tell that Augustus was in a hurry.

Just then, the security guard captain said eagerly, "Young Master Zander, this man said he's here to find Doctor Zander. He said his daughter is sick and needs surgery."

At those words, Jace and the others exchanged looks and laughed smugly at the same time.

"Sh*t, you're really unlucky, huh? You're already p*ss poor, and your daughter is sick too. You're really a jinx, hahaha…"

Augustus was burning with rage. His daughter was in critical condition, but these b*stards had the audacity to say such things!

"I f*cking dare you to say that again!"

Augustus rushed up to grab Jace, but he was kicked down by a young man with bleached yellow hair.

That person's name was Andy Cabot, who hung out with Jace back in university. He also bullied Augustus all the time.

"You little b*tch. Do you think you're tough now? How dare you try to fight Jace!"

Then, Jace pinched Augustus's face and said slyly, "Don't you want to see Doctor Zander? Then let me tell you. Doctor Zander is my grandfather!"
