Vol. 3 - Chapter 140 - Katariona Meets Marie’s Uncle Amidst the Commotion
Vol. 3 - Chapter 140 - Katariona Meets Marie’s Uncle Amidst the Commotion
After two hours of chatting and laughing, we decided to call it a night and went to greet Sebas-san, but he said he was busy and requested that we wait a little longer.
As the wind picked up and the weather turned chilly, we were escorted from the terrace to the drawing-room.
The large window of the drawing-room provided a panoramic view of the "Rosette Garden," and it was as beautiful as a painting.
While gazing at the "Rosette Garden" through the window, I suddenly noticed that there was a lot of noise around the entrance of the Drawing Room.
"Please wait! The garden is reserved today!"
"It would only be reserved during the day. As for me, I want to entertain guests here tonight!"
There are two voices. One is Sebas-san, who is the other?
The arguing voices grew closer and closer, and then someone barged into the drawing-room.
"Baron Campbell! You cannot come in without permission!"
That must mean he is Charlotte's father.
The small, fat, middle-aged man with the same flaxen hair as Charlotte was indeed Baron Campbell.
There were not many of them, but I had seen him on several occasions, so I remembered his face.
Baron Campbell looked around and seemed to have caught sight of the table where we were sitting.
"Is it those ladies who rented out the place?'
Confirming this with Sebas-san, Baron Campbell seemed to have no idea who we were.
This seat is probably difficult to see from that side because of the shiny window.
Otherwise, he would have bowed to Chris first as a vassal.
If he were a nobleman of this country, he would not be unaware of the face of his country's princess.
"Sir, it is as you see."
"Fumu."
Baron Campbell seems to be pondering something.
"How impertinent of him to address Chris, the princess! I shall go and warn him."
"Wait a minute, Tria. Let's see what happens first."
Chris stops Tria as she is about to get up.
"But ......"
"Come on, Tria. Something interesting is about to happen."
Angel said, slyly. She is clearly amused.
"Angel. You're doing that ...... thing again ....... But I understand. I will do as Chris says."
I, on the other hand, decided to watch and see what would happen.
"Well, let's do it like this. How about I pay for the whole day's rental and you ladies go home?"
What a terribly selfish proposal.
"That's not how it works. If you make another reservation for another day, we can make arrangements."
"It has to be today! I said I'll pay you any amount of money you want!"
"It's not about the money."
Sebas-san rebuked him, but Baron Campbell would not back down.
He wants to rent out the garden at all costs. His selfishness is just like Charlotte's.
Charlotte's character is probably inherited from her father.
It is often said, "Like father, like daughter."
Baron Campbell is trying to push his luck, but Sebas-san is not giving an inch.
As a hotel manager, he is probably accustomed to dealing with such complainers.
"What's all the fuss about?"
Two gentlemen entered the drawing-room with familiar voices.
"What's this!? His Excellency Prime Minister Paulford and Count Forrester. I am sorry for not being here to greet you."
Sebas-san hurriedly bowed to the two gentlemen.
My uncle and ...... Count Forrester?
A rare combination indeed.
Count Forrester is the brother of the head butler and Marie's uncle.
Leon, puzzled, spoke to me telepathically.
"Is that Marie's uncle?"
"It seems so. I've never met him before."
He occasionally sneaks in to check on Marie, but I've never seen him.
They look so much alike that it is easy to tell at a glance that they are related.
His tall, muscular physique, visible even through his clothes, suggests that he is a military man.
Count Forrester is, as I recall, the deputy commander of the Order of the Kingsguard. The fact that he is wearing the uniform of the Kingsguard means that he is on duty.
Is he escorting my uncle?
But a knight of the Kingsguard is supposed to only guard royalty.
"Did he come to pick up Chris or something?"
I unintentionally voiced my question.
"No. Count Forrester is here to escort Mother. Come to think of it, she mentioned that a friend of hers was coming from abroad today, so she came to this hotel where she is staying to meet him."
Chris explained that an old friend of the queen is traveling to the Kingdom of Findalia and staying at this hotel.
"Is that so? But what is my uncle doing here?"
As we tilted our heads, my uncle seemed to notice us and came quickly toward us.
"Rio! My dear niece. Is it God's will that we should meet here?"
That god is sitting on my lap. I looked at Leon and shook my head.
Apparently, it was not divinely ordained.
I stood up and did a curtesy.
"Uncle. Good day to you. Did you come to this hotel on business?"
"Mm. I am an attendant of Her Highness, I suppose."
My uncle's face slackened as he gazed at me.
"As usual, you are a fool for your niece. Prime Minister."
Before I knew it, Chris was standing in a regal position beside me, her face grim.
Is she angry that he passed by her and greeted me first?
"That's not true. She is jealous of the Prime Minister."
"Eh? What did you say, Leon?"
My uncle showed no sign of panic, but instead gave Chris the courtesy of a retainer.
"Hello, Your Royal Highness. Are you having a tea party with your friends today?"
"Shameless. You knew about this already, didn't you?"
"What are you talking about?"
Although it is a bit blunt, this kind of exchange is probably an everyday occurrence.
After all, Chris has been learning about domestic politics from my uncle since she was a child. And now she is learning it all over again.
He also greeted Tria and Angel respectively.
"Katariona-sama. My brother and niece are always at your service. My name is Auguste Forrester. This is the first time we have met in this way, but I knew of you from a letter from my niece."
I was greeted by Count Forrester, who was standing one step behind my uncle.
"I am pleased to meet you for the first time. Count Forrester. My name is Katariona Yurie Grandeur. I, too, am always indebted to the head butler and Marie."
Count Forrester smiled at me when I faced him. When he smiles, he looks like Marie, and his voice is just like that of the head butler. Somehow I feel a kinship with him.
"My niece's letters always mention you, and I am honored to meet you in this way."
"What do Marie's letters say about me?"
I didn't mean to pry into the correspondence between uncle and niece, but I am curious about what Marie writes about me.
"Every time she writes, she writes that she is happy to serve a very intelligent and kind young lady. I feel as if even I am watching the growth of Katariona-sama."
She writes about my growing up? What is Marie writing to her own uncle?
I can feel my face turning red as I listened to Count Forrester.
"His Excellency the Prime Minister often boasts of his niece, but looking at you, I think I know what he's talking about."
"Wahaha! I knew that you would! Isn't my niece adorable?"
Suddenly, my uncle interrupted me and Count Forrester.
My uncle put his hand around Count Forrester's neck and said something outrageous.
"But I won't give her to you as a wife. After all, Rio will be my daughter in the future."
Count Forrester is a bachelor. I have heard from a confidant that the Count intends to adopt Marie as his daughter and make her the heir of the House Forrester.
"Yes? What are you saying? Prime Minister. Are you already drunk?"
Count Forrester looked annoyed.
"I haven't had a drink!"
Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Baron Campbell staggering over to us.
"Her Royal Highness the Princess? Is it Her Royal Highness Princess Christina?"
Baron Campbell seemed to come in at a rapid pace as if he were suddenly rolling over, and then he fell to his knees in front of Chris.
Because of the conversation, we had had with Uncle and Count Forrester, I had completely forgotten he was there.
"I did not know that Her Royal Highness the Princess was here, I am terribly sorry!"
Baron Campbell's face is pale as he looked Chris in the eye.
He may not have been able to see us clearly, but he must have just realized the gravity of the situation after making such a spectacularly ugly scene in front of the royal family.
"I don't mind," she replied to the Baron, "I'm just here on my own today. You said you wanted to rent out the Rosette Garden, didn't you?"
"I wasn't aware that Her Highness the Princess had a private party, so I'd like to give up for today and call it a day! I am terribly sorry!"
Baron Campbell was completely overwhelmed by the princess's majesty.
"No," she said, "We'll leave you to it. Manager, do you have reservations for the Rosette Garden later?"
Sebas-san, who had been kneeling next to Baron Campbell, calmly answered Chris's question.
"I have no appointments after this. Your Royal Highness."
"Yes. Then there's no problem with Baron Campbell renting out the place after this, no?"
Sebas-san looked up with a puzzled look on his face and gave Tria a peek.
Tria nodded as she saw the look in his eyes. This means it is the right thing to do.
"It can't be helped. Baron Campbell, could you please go through the formalities?"
Baron Campbell nodded, clearly relieved, and bowed to Chris again.
"Thank you, Your Highness, the Princess, for your kindness!"
Sebas-san and Baron Campbell left the drawing-room together.
"Prime Minister. Find out what Baron Campbell is doing after this."
After confirming that Baron Campbell had left the drawing-room, Chris whispered to Uncle.
"I don't need to be told. But Your Highness the Princess is quite theatrical."
Chris puffed her cheeks out as Uncle smirked at him.
"Do you think he'll make a move?"
"Probably ......"
Unable to understand the exchange between Chris and Uncle, I tilted my head back when Leon sent me a telepathic message.
"There must be some nefarious activity going on. Well, leave it to the Prime Minister."
That reminds me, my uncle said he is looking into Baron Campbell. Leon is right, there must be something going on here today.
Chris seems to know something, but it's not something I want to poke my nose into.
I'll leave it to my uncle.
