Alyssa immediately turned around and shushed him, “Hush now, don’t speak. I’ve got this nagging

feeling that Mara is up to no good. I want to see what sort of mischief she’s planning this time.”

Dean fell silent. Indeed, Mara was quite the troublemaker. Ever since Mara had set foot in their home, a

series of unfortunate events had unfolded, even stirring up trouble in Balfour and Ivy’s relationship.

He and Alyssa had been planning to visit the film set tomorrow morning to see Ivy. She was alone with

her injured ankle and all. Even surrounded by her colleagues, the old couple couldn’t help but worry

about her.

Once Mara was certain that Dean and Alyssa’s room was quiet, she turned off the main lights in the

living room and tiptoed upstairs. She didn’t barge straight into Balfour’s room; instead, she pressed her

ear against the study door for a moment. But the study was built with Balfour’s need for privacy in

mind, soundproofed to perfection. After standing in silence and hearing no discernible activity, she

could no longer contain her excitement and pushed the door open. Holding her breath, she stepped

inside only to find Balfour, who was usually so vibrant, now slumped over his desk, fast asleep.

Mara approached Balfour step by step, her excitement growing with each movement. “Balfour, are you

asleep?” she called out tentatively, but there was no response from him resting on the desk.

“Balfour, if you’re tired, you shouldn’t sleep here; you might catch a cold. Let me help y go back to your

room to sleep,” she whispered as she made her way to his side.

Standing before him, she gazed at his still handsome profile, even in repose. Unable to contain her

thrill any longer, she reached out her hand and gently caressed Balfour’s fa “Balfour, do you have any

idea how much I’ve sacrificed just to be closer to you? You or know about the tragedy that struck my

family back then, and that I fled the country to escape the aftermath. But do you know what I’ve given

up just to be near you?”

Her fingertips traced the line from his eyebrow to his jaw. Every feature of Balfour’s was utterly

fascinating to her. When she first laid eyes on him, she fell deeply in love. That’s when she understood

what love at first sight truly meant-once this person appears, your eyes, your heart, are completely

taken, never again to let anyone else in.

Sadly, Balfour’s attention had never been on Mara; it was always occupied by her sister. But

fortunately, her sister was now dead!

Although Ivy had come into the picture, Mara was not concerned. There was plenty of time, and she

was confident that she would deal with Ivy once and for all.

“Balfour, now it’s just you and me. That clueless girl, Ivy, has moved out. This shows that

We are meant to be together, you belong only to me.”

Mara’s hand lingered on Balfour’s cheek as a low chuckle escaped her lips. “Oh, my dear sister, your

death was so worthwhile! Because you died, I’ve had Balfour’s protection for all these years.”

Mara watched the sleeping Balfour for a long while before finally taking out her phone to snap a photo

of his peaceful face.
