Chapter 174 - Falling Off The Bridge
Chapter 174 - Falling Off The Bridge
"Help me!"
It was the scene that was branded into Zhenyi's mind like a tattoo. There was nothing memorable about this scene in a good sense, but still, it was impossible for Zhenyi to forget it either. How could you forget something that had been the subject of your constant nightmares?
Surely, anyone wouldn't be able to forget it too.
The young Zhenyi was hanging from a bridge, screaming for help. Below her was a flowing river. The speed of the water was terrifying and so was the picture playing before her eyes.
She was thrown into the river in an attempt to kill her but they said who could kill the mortal that God Himself is meaning to protect? That was why, when she was tossed into the river, her hand caught the iron railing in the end moment.
Call it God's will or whatever! But Zhenyi knew one thing that she couldn't lose hope in the end.
"Hold my hand!" The boy emerged all of a sudden, astonishing Zhenyi.
They were supposed to go separate ways as the boy was successful in contacting his father who would send him help shortly. Zhenyi was supposed to hide at their determined place until he would come back to her but as he went out to finish his task, the men who were searching for the two children found Zhenyi. No matter how strong she was, she was not capable enough of fighting those trained and well-built men, after all, she was merely a nine years old child who hadn't even seen the outer world in almost a year.
Zhenyi blinked her eyes at him. She didn't know if she should be happy or worried. Yes, she wanted someone to save her but she didn't want him to come back to save her either, because she knew those people would hurt him too.
"Why are you here?" Though she was hung from a brode, she still had the courage to ask him a very unreasonable question.
"To fulfill my promise," came a sharp reply.
He knew she was a stubborn little thing. " Didn't you say I am like a knight to you?" He smiled at her. "I am here to protect my damsel in distress."
"I don't want you to save me. Go back." Her vision was blurring and her hold on the iron railing was losing. " They will catch you again and I don't want you to get hurt because of me. So, please go back."
"Give me your hand," said the boy, completely ignoring her blabbering. "Consider it a favor. Let me save you, please. We have yet to get to know each other. Don't you think we need to be safe to know each other?"
"Your dad will be searching for you, go to him. I don't even know how to go back to my home." Tears started streaming down her cheeks. She was so brave yet so soft at her heart. He couldn't bear to see her hurt.
He leaned forward and tried to hold her hand. He was not very tall either but he managed to hold her hand. If he pulled her in a single try, he would be able to get her out of here but if not…
God knew how, but he managed to get Zhenyi out of the situation and when she was on the ground, he saw her bleeding beneath her clothes. She had been stabbed in the stomach. He didn't know how she had been holding until now.
He shook her body as if not to let her sleep. He didn't know what to do in such a situation, but one thing he knew was that if she slept now, perhaps he would not be able to see her awake.
"Talk to me!" He shouted.
"My stomach is hurting," said Zhenyi, weakly.
"Of course, it will hurt, dummy. You have been hurt. Please hold on, my dad will be here. He can get us out of this situation."
She didn't know how but Zhenyi realized one thing that he was not happy to go back with his father and it wasn't hard to assume that he just contacted her because of her.
"Are you hearing me?" He asked.
Seeing that she was not responding to him, he tried to provoke her because he realized that she was not very good at provoking. "You don't even tell me your name and you still dare to ignore me by pretending to sleep in front of me."
"For a man who assures that he doesn't know how to talk, you sure have a wicked tongue," came a prompt sharp reply.
"Well, compared to you I am still nobody." He tried to lighten the situation but only if he could.
He didn't stop talking to her. "Tell me how are you gonna pay me back since I saved your life not once or twice but several times."
"You can make me your slave since I have nowhere to go," said Zhenyi half-jokingly.
She didn't know how to go back to her family or if they would ever accept her back. She had been the reason for her mother's and sister's death so maybe her family would hate her too. She stole her father of his wife and her brother of his mother. She deserved to be hated.
"Don't talk like that. We will look for your family," the boy chided her. He really wanted to help and that's why the boy who had a goalless and meaningless life, found his objective in saving her life even if he had to risk his for her. "Do you know something about your family that can help us to find them?" He questioned her.
