Chapter 15 – Comforting Herself (4)
Aunty Lian didn’t want to listen to her excuses, “Luckily I still have some left in the kitchen, I will bring you the rest of the soup right now!”
“Aunty Lian, I am fine...” Yu Duo wanted to tell her that her body was fine. She was fine, but Aunty Lian had already walked away without listening to here. She brought back the remaining herbal soup from the kitchen along with the dregs and placed it in front of her.
“Madam, you should drink it while it’s still warm,” said Aunty Lian as she stood her ground. It was obvious that she wasn’t going to go anywhere until she had finished drinking the soup.
Yu Duo stared at the bowl in front of her, it was at least twice the size of the bowl before, and she could see the dregs floating around on the top of the bowl. She could already taste the bitterness on the back of her tongue and her stomach started to roil.
“Aunty Lian, my period is fine. I don’t have painful periods anymore.”
Aunty Lian wouldn’t listen to a word she said; she even thought Yu Duo was just looking for excuses.
Just a month or two ago, before Master’s accident, Madam couldn’t even get out of bed during her period. How was that fine?
Aunty Lian’s face dropped, “Madam, the herbalist said that even if your body had recovered, you will still need to take this a few more times to solidity it.”
“But...” Yu Duo was floundering.
“Go on, drink it. It’s not good cold.”
Under Aunty Lian’s unbudging stare, Yu Duo had no choice but to pick up the bowl courageously like she was about to go to battle as she chugged the herbal soup.
It would be too painful to drink it one sip at a time.
After Yu Duo had finished chugging her herbal soup, she looked even more pale than she was at the funeral. She covered her mouth, and tears were about to stream down her face.
Aunty Lian said satisfyingly, “Madam, don’t stay up to late. I shall see myself out now.”
Having said that, she left with the bowl.
Yu Duo quickly got up, locked the bedroom door, and fished out the candies she used to have after the herbal soup. That finally afforded some relief to the bitter taste in her mouth.
WHOOOSH!!
A gust of wind came in from the opened window and blew the curtain high up for a prolonged period of time. It was empty behind the curtain, almost as though someone was hiding behind it.
With that image in her mind, plus what had happened last night, Yu Duo felt her hair standing up on the back of her neck.
Suddenly, a familiar voice rang next to her ear through gritted teeth. It sounded like both right next to her ear but also from very far away at the same time. It was very metaphysical, but she heard it clearly.
—– “I didn’t know you are afraid of anything.”
Yu Duo shuddered and her heart was pounding wildly in her chest. Her knees buckled and she looked carefully around the room. There was no one else inside the room other than her.
Did Fu Sinian return?
No! That’s impossible!
Yu Duo refused to believe it.
Fu Sinian was dead and there was no such thing as ghosts.
It’s alright. It’s alright. She was just imagining all these. Possibly because she missed Sinian so much that she was hearing things.
Yu Duo patted herself on her chest to comfort herself.
