Chapter 868: Elder Sister – Younger Brother
When Hilda heard the news that her mother would be accompanying the little boy for the next few days, the family was having lunch together.
The Baron was often away from home due to his work matters so it was just the Madame with her two children.
The servants had placed all their dishes on the table before vacating the room, giving the family of three some time to spend in each others’ company.
Hilda glanced at her mother who was serving the young boy, helping him eat despite him being old enough to do it himself.
This was the same as her previous life as the boy had been pampered beyond belief since he was born.
In the past, when she first reunited with her family, she was already close to thirteen years and had witnessed the dark side of humanity after living on the streets.
At that time, when she saw how lucky her younger brother had been to have someone who protected him all through his life, she felt burning jealousy erupt within her.
.....
She had lost all her hopes in life after her adoptive parents had died and she was left to wander on the streets, yearning for the day when she would finally be able to return to the inn she used to call her home.
However, this young boy had been the apple of so many peoples’ eyes and still possessed his naive nature due to his ignorance of the outside world.
This difference in them was clear as night and day when she first arrived at this mansion.
Even back then, her mother had done everything in her power to give her the best education and that sense of security that she needed.
Despite such efforts, Hilda had a hard time getting closer to them at that time.
From being an orphaned commoner to a noble with a rich and loving family.
Hilda did not know how to assimilate this information in her weary bones and thus had taken a much longer time to get closer to her family members.
However, in this life, she had vowed not to repeat the same mistakes as before and hence had already begun changing the course of her life.
Instead of waiting on the streets till she was thirteen and could have a fateful encounter with her mother, she had hastened this meeting by putting in some effort and a lot of planning.
Her mother had done the next part of the work, ensuring that she regained the title of the Baron’s daughter without any further complications.
Thus Hilda had begun her classes as a noble child at the age of nine instead of the past when she barely had any time before her coming-of-age ceremony.
This time, she would not repeat any of the events which had hindered her in her past life.
Therefore, she softened her eyes and smiled when her mother informed her of the schedule for the next few days.
“If I can complete my classes ahead of time someday then maybe I could also join you and little brother.” She suggested this slight change in their plans.
When the Baroness heard that her daughter would like to accompany them, she was more than happy to agree to this plan.
She had been worried that either Hilda or Edgar would be averse to the other’s presence but it looked like the elder sister was a good child who was willing to care for her little brother.
This thought brought a smile to her face as she turned toward her son who sat next to her.
“Did you hear that, Eddie? Big sister will join us.” She squeezed his chubby cheek, making him pout at her once again.
“You would like that, wouldn’t you?” She did not give up and continued massaging his fleshy cheek.
Edgar, who was also called Eddie, looked up to glance at the older girl who sat opposite them.
He wasn’t too familiar with his sister though she had entered their family many months ago.
After all, soon after Hilda had arrived in their household, the little boy had to depart for his first year at the academy.
Therefore, there had not been too many interactions between the two and some awkwardness was expected.
However, his father had asked him to be a good boy and try to get closer to his sister who had been sad for many years since she could not stay with them.
The little boy was unaware of the severity of this matter but a few minor details about their situation had been explained in simple terms.
To him, Hilda was the sister who had gotten lost when she was younger and had been brought back home after a very long time.
He had seen his parents shedding tears when they officially recognized the girl as their daughter so he could tell that they liked her very much.
Even his nanny had asked him to be good to this sister and not fight with her.
However, no matter what everyone said, he had a mind of his own and could think for himself.
He was willing to obey his parents but at the same time, his pampered upbringing did not let him suffer any grievances in silence.
Therefore, while he could accept her joining their outing, he wasn’t going to open up to her right away.
A child’s senses were sharper than adults and they could tell when someone did not make them feel good.
This was exactly how he felt when he first laid eyes on this sister of his.
He did not know what it was and neither could he let his parents know, especially after witnessing the pure joy and love he had seen on their faces while they hugged her.
After all, he was still a child, and even if he were to put his thoughts into words, they might brush him off and ask him to be more receptive toward her.
For this reason, he had never revealed what was on his mind and kept a distance from her even after he had returned from the academy.
He also did not throw a tantrum when his mother had begun neglecting him for her sake during his vacation which would end soon.
He respected his father who had asked him to be sensible now that he was growing up and was studying at the academy.
Therefore, he continued to hold in his dissatisfaction and nodded toward his mother, indicating that his sister could join them.
The Baroness cheered inwardly at the thought of the siblings being able to bond with each other by using this outing as an excuse.
Seated opposite them, Hilda also curled her lips to show her happiness but that smile did not reflect in her eyes.
She had noticed the young boy’s reluctance as well as his vigilance when their mother had asked him those questions.
However, she wasn’t too worried about it as similar incidents had taken place in her past life as well.
Edgar, who had been pampered all through his life, suddenly had to be nice to someone whom he had not known before so he was bound to be unhappy.
Despite knowing this fact, Hilda wasn’t too bothered because she was confident in herself.
‘He became my good younger brother in the past life so things will be the same in this life as well.’ She assured herself, fixing her gaze on the little boy with chubby cheeks.
When their eyes met, Hilda widened her smile and this time, it was a genuine one as she was confident about gaining his love and affection just as she had in their previous life.
