Chapter 927: A Shameless Bastard
“Shameless bastard!” A disgusted whisper echoed from a certain corner of the Banquet Hall far from where Earl Blaise stood, explaining his family’s circumstances to the King.
Though this whisper came from a distance, the men with aura within their bodies had heard it right away.
However, none of them turned toward the source of the sound for two reasons.
The first reason was that they were acknowledging those words aimed at Earl Blaise, implying that he truly was a shameless nuisance.
At the same time, they did not turn toward the one who had just cursed in the presence of the King to prevent this person from being embarrassed and punished if this caught the attention of higher nobles.
However, what many failed to realize was that even King Ophire himself, who was said to possess the highest amount of aura within his body among all the nobles present here, had also heard that disgruntled voice.
Yet he too pretended to not have heard it and only stared at the Earl who was sweating profusely in his presence.
.....
Earl Blaise’s aura wasn’t nearly at the same level as the King and hence did not know that someone had just cursed at him which many noblemen had heard but chose to ignore.
These noblemen were tactful to not turn towards the grumbling voice but one little girl, whose curiosity outweighed her courtesy, glanced over her shoulder to check who had just spoken while being discreet.
Yvonne had almost chortled when she heard this disgusted voice, making her eager to know who exactly dared to behave in this way while inside the Royal Palace.
Thanks to her careful actions to not seem too obvious while glancing at the corner where this voice was heard, she did not attract any attention from those around her.
Her effort to be discreet paid off and her curiosity dissipated upon realizing that the curse had escaped from a certain middle-aged noble woman’s lips.
‘Baroness MacIntyre?’ Yvonne raised her brow when she recognized who this person was.
The wife of the Baron she had formed a contract with many years ago was the one who had uttered that curse laced with blatant disgust and anger.
Even right now, the Baroness had a fire burning in her eyes as she leered at Earl Blaise who stood before the King, ignorant of everything happening around him.
The Baron was left speechless and wide-eyed at first but soon hurried to cover his wife’s mouth with his wide palm which managed to bring her back to her senses.
As the young girl watched in secrecy, the noblewoman patted his arm to denote that she would not lose control over herself once again.
However, the anger seething within her did not seem to lessen as she continued to glare at the Earl.
Though Yvonne had to admit that Earl Blaise was being shameless by coming up with excuses when everyone knew why his wife must have gotten so feeble, she wasn’t able to discern why the Baroness was reacting so strongly.
Therefore, her brows furrowed as she tried to make sense of this situation.
“Baroness MacIntyre and Countess Blaise are siblings.” A deeply lowered voice whispered close to her, making the child turn away from the Baroness in the next instant.
Yvonne, at first, had assumed that it was her father who had just spoken but found something wrong when she realized that it wasn’t his voice.
This made her glance at the source of the sound, only to find someone unexpectedly standing right next to her.
Marquess Sullivan Samed smiled when he saw the bewildered expression on his most favored pupil’s face before continuing what he had just disclosed.
“She’s annoyed that her sister is suffering after marrying the Earl.” He explained why Baroness MacIntyre was so furious right now.
Yvonne did not know when her tutor had approached her but his words brought a glint of understanding to her amethyst eyes.
She had no reason to doubt him so she believed his explanations since she wasn’t too familiar with this matter.
Yvonne had been taught about the noble families of their Kingdom but this knowledge was limited to only the main branches.
The numerous side branches had never been included in her curriculum hence she was ignorant of this fact until now.
Now that she had learned of the Baroness’ reason for despising Earl Blaise, she did not find this situation to be odd at all.
Instead, she wondered why the Baroness, who she could tell was the elder sister, did nothing to help her younger sibling during these troubled times.
Her questioning glance moved from the Baroness and finally landed on the man whom she believed would be able to give her the answers she was looking for.
However, her frown only deepened when she noticed the Marquess staring back at her with a subtle smile, indicating that her queries would take longer to be answered.
He even pointed his chin towards the elevated platform, making her recall that they were still in the presence of the King.
Marquess Samed had already been generous enough to let her in on the details he was aware of so she could only nod in compliance with his actions and turned towards the direction he had just pointed at.
As she fixed her gaze on the elevated platform, she heard a statement coming from the King which made her raise her brows once again.
Yvonne was distracted by what she had just witnessed and what the Marquess had said so she had not been paying attention to the conversation that had taken place between the King and Earl Blaise.
Though there wasn’t much context, she could decipher the meaning hidden behind the Ruler’s seemingly simple words.
“I pride myself on the fact that my subjects are so loyal. I hope Earl Blaise will not let me down.” King Ophire finally let out a smile as those words came to an end.
Though it might sound as though the King was asking his nobles to continue being loyal to him, there was an underlying meaning in his words that could be interpreted in a different manner.
Rosenhyde had abolished the practice of polygamy after King Ophire had ascended to the throne.
The Kings and noblemen of the past had the option to take in multiple partners as long as the first woman they married remained his legal wife in the sights of nobility.
However, King Ophire, seeing the tragic events that took place in his father’s life, decided to put an end to this tradition.
Thus Rosenhyde had become a Kingdom that practiced and preached monogamy.
Therefore, the King’s words could also be hinting at Earl Blaise’s recent rumors concerning his infidelity which had gotten a lot of attention among the noblemen.
If one was left unchecked then others would follow soon after and King Ophire did not want anyone to suffer the fate that his mother, the previous Queen, and Prince Draco’s mother, Concubine Yuliza had gone through.
Seeing Countess Blaise today had reminded the King of his mother’s condition which moved from anxiety and depression to hostility and finally ended in depravity.
No one had found their happy ending in the previous generation of the Royal family so King Ophire did not want any other young child to experience what he and his younger brother had witnessed.
His eyes even fell upon the young daughter of the Earl, hoping that her father’s actions did not leave a mark on her heart.
For her happy future, the King raised his head once again and fixed his stern gaze on the Earl.
“I shall do my best, Your Majesty!” The response he received in a trembling voice was pleasing to the King who waved his wrist, allowing the Blaise family to step away.
The Earl did not even have the chance to bring out his present before the King and could only reluctantly hand it over to the Royal Chamberlain, worried that he might displease the King if he tried to make a fuss right now.
The other two Earls, who had gotten their fair share of the limelight thanks to the precious presents they brought forward, sneered at the disheartened look on Earl Blaise’s face.
They both disapproved of his actions and thus were pleased to see that there were consequences that one would have to suffer for their recklessness.
With this, an awkward air filled the Palace as nothing of this sort had happened ever before.
Though the King sat with an expressionless face, everyone could tell that he wasn’t happy with Earl Blaise, causing them to also make sure to not follow in that man’s footsteps.
The Royal Chamberlain, who returned to his position after setting aside the recent present handed to him, glanced at the folder he had been holding to see which family would appear next.
Once the Earls completed greeting the King, it was the turn of the Viscounts to make their way forward.
Usually, Viscount Zavanth would be the only one from this tier of nobility to show up for the King’s birthday celebration.
The other Fief Lords whose territories were far from the Capital would often send their apologies for not appearing for the King’s birthday celebration along with the presents they had prepared.
However, things would be different this year due to the appearance of the members of a certain family who had been away from the Capital for the longest time.
Therefore, the Royal Chamberlain glanced in their direction before announcing their name, asking them to step forward.
