Chapter 464: Is There Someone Standing by the Gate?
Tan Mo paused for a second and acted as if she only just realized something. “Oh, right! How could I forget this? There’s no way you can go back to when you’re a 15-year-old! Silly me! But no worries. You did pretty well on your graduation exam. Even though you aren’t the best, it’s still enough to get you to Beijing University.”
Tan Mo didn’t even hold back the pressure she was giving Lin Jingyuan as she wanted the high school senior to know that even if she did well on her graduation exam, there were many more people out there that were better than her.
Of course, Lin Jingyuan could be proud of her achievement, but she should never become arrogant.
Lin Jingyuan lowered her head in embarrassment. When she raised her head again, the people from Beijing University had already walked out the door.
She could only bite her lip and watch them leave.
Since the people from Beijing University had clearly shown that they weren’t interested in her, she decided to apply to Hua University instead.
However, even Hua University had the same reaction. Professor Jiao’s expression was as dark as it could get. He quickly followed after Beijing University and left the classroom with his students following closely behind him.
If Lin Jingyuan had never suggested the competition, Hua University could have been saved from such an embarrassment.
The result of the competition made it seem as if Hua University wasn’t as good as Beijing University.
Lin Jingyuan opened her mouth but couldn’t find any words in her head.
In the end, Tan Mo didn’t care what happened to Lin Jingyuan.
Just as she promised, she took the opposite route back and healed the injured trees that were on the other side of the path.
Even though healing plants was easier than healing humans, using too much of her healing power was still taxing.
After sending her power into the last tree, Tan Mo finally let out a sigh of relief.
She quietly sneaked back into the group.
As they walked toward the gate, Tan Mo suddenly noticed a familiar figure standing by it.
She rubbed her eyes and shook her head, thinking that she was seeing things because she was exhausted from overusing her healing power.
However, when she closed her eyes and opened them again, the figure was still standing by the gate.
She rubbed her eyes again, and the person was still there.
Wei Zhiqian was there standing by the gate when he noticed Tan Mo closing her eyes and rubbing them.
He didn’t even need to guess to know that she thought she was seeing illusions.
The man couldn’t help but laugh at her reaction.
Tan Mo quickly turned to the person who was walking next to her and asked, “Chi Xuanzi, do you see a person standing by the gate?”
Since the guard was in the guardhouse, Wei Zhiqian was the only person standing there.
“Yes.” Chi Xuanzi nodded, unable to understand why Tan Mo asked that. “Tan Mo, are you feeling unwell or something?”
“N-no. I’m fine.” Tan Mo quickly smiled. “I just thought I was seeing an illusion or something.”
“No, there really is a person standing there,” Chi Xuanzi assured her. “You must be tired. Why don’t you get some rest when we get back to the hotel?”
Tan Mo nodded and followed the party to the gate. When they almost got there, Wei Zhiqian called out, “Momo.”
Tan Mo was afraid to run into Wei Zhiqian at the moment.
At the same time, she felt delighted and excited from the bottom of her heart.
It was perhaps because she was used to experiencing such emotions whenever she met Wei Zhiqian.
It was something that was already deeply engraved in her.
Tan Mo’s primal emotion reacted faster than her brain, and she acted instinctively.
She ran toward Wei Zhiqian and greeted him. “Uncle! Why are you here?”
“This was your first time leaving B City alone, so I was a little worried,” Wei Zhiqian explained with a faint smile.
“But isn’t it Tuesday today? Don’t you have work?” It was only 5 p.m., which meant that it wasn’t even time to get off work yet.
Plus, it took a few hours to travel from B City to Jiaoyuan City.
Even if Wei Zhiqian took the plane or high-speed train, it would still take time.
It was evident that Wei Zhiqian had left B City quite early.
“I didn’t have anything to do last night, so I finished today’s work instead. Fortunately, there weren’t that many things for me to do, so I decided to come and take a look,” Wei Zhiqian explained.
Even though the man made it seem like it wasn’t much, Tan Mo knew that finishing a whole day’s work in a single day was very taxing.
His action warmed Tan Mo’s heart. “I’m here with the teachers and students. You don’t have to worry about a thing.”
“Well, this is still your first time traveling without any close friends or family members,” Wei Zhiqian said, knowing that the students who came along with the trip weren’t really that close with Tan Mo.
Their talk was interrupted when Professor Yao and the rest of the group approached them.
“Professor Yao,” Wei Zhiqian quickly greeted. Since he was once a student at Beijing University, he recognized the head of the Department of Mathematics.
“It was kind of a waste for you to come here today.” Professor Yao smiled. “We’ve done all we needed to do today, and we’ll be heading back tomorrow. There will be other staff from the university to come and set up the booth. Even if you didn’t come today, you’d be able to see Tan Mo tomorrow.”
“That’s different. I can’t get the worried feeling out of my head until I see her,” Wei Zhiqian explained with a smile.
Professor Yao knew that Tan Mo would be safe with Wei Zhiqian. Thus, he said, “Well, there’s no harm in that. Since there’s nothing more for us to do here, Tan Mo, you don’t have to follow us anymore. As for the rest of the students, you can do whatever you want. There are quite a lot of interesting places to visit here in Jiaoyuan City. Just be careful of your surroundings, got it? Also, our plane leaves at 2:30 tomorrow, so you guys can sleep until around 11.”
Lin Fuxi took the chance and asked, “Professor Yao, can I go back home for a night?”
“Oh? Is your home here in Jiaoyuan City?”
“Kind of. It’s in the county next to here. The place is still under Jiaoyuan City’s jurisdiction.” Worried that Professor Yao would refuse, she added, “It’ll only take me an hour to head back home. It’s almost as long as taking a bus tour around Jiaoyuan City.”
Professor Yao thought about it and said, “Well, it’s wrong to not let you go back home when you’re this close. Alright, but be careful on your way there, okay? Make sure you return before noon tomorrow.”
“Thank you! I’ll be back by then!” Lin Fuxi exclaimed.
At first, she thought they would be staying in Jiaoyuan City for three days and could return home the next day.
She never expected that they would take care of everything in one single day and would return to B City the next day.
Lin Fuxi had the option to return to B City on her own, but she didn’t want to spend her money on the plane ticket. That was why she could only hurry back home that night.
“Let’s go,” Wei Zhiqian said to Tan Mo.
Tan Mo paused for a few seconds and nodded. “Okay…”
Hearing her response, Wei Zhiqian couldn’t help but turn to look at Tan Mo in a weird way.
