Chapter 51: Preparations
Chapter 51: Preparations
"Ruby, come take a look - I did it! It's finished!"
Ruby steps out of the amulet, takes her human form and looks at me, standing there with Blitz in my hands. The lightning keeps going up and down the blade, so at times it looks like I'm holding lightning in my hands.
Ruby says "Wow, that sword looks amazing!"
"Thanks! It's called Blitz."
Ruby says "Blitz? Isn't that a pretty simple name? Shouldn't a sword like that have a grander name?"
I reach over, pick up the sheath, sheath Blitz and toss it to Ruby.
"Try to draw the sword."
She tries with all her might, but the sword won't budge, so she throws it at me. I easily unsheathe it and spin it around before re-sheathing it.
Ruby says "What, she doesn't like me because I'm a fire spirit?"
"No, if I'm right, I'll be able to draw it. In fact, I might explode when I die, I'm not sure."
Ruby says "Why?"
"Before I tell you, don't hit!"
Ruby says "That just means you did something stupid that I should hit you for."
"I used fragments of my core to make the sword core."
Ruby says, "What, you basically made the sword using your own soul?"
"Umm, if my core represents my soul, then I guess so. That's why no one but me should be able to use it."
Ruby says, "Why would you do something so risky, that's crazy, I should beat you up for that!"
"I took risks, yes, but to make a sword that can kill a demon the risks were worth it."
Ruby says, "Can it, kill the demon, I mean?"
"Well, I'm pretty sure it can, why don't we go find out?"
Ruby says, "Right now? You look like you're about to fall."
I stop and take stock of myself, to be honest, I'm feeling pretty exhausted and pretty hungry. It's probably been a few days while I was charming Blitz.
"Well, maybe after I eat and get some rest."
Ruby smiles as she follows me back to camp. I quickly cook what meat is left of the bird thing and we share it before going to rest. When I wake up, I'm pretty sure it's been at least a day. I catch something to cook for breakfast.
After lunch, I prepare my armor and weapons and head for the cave. The longest part is navigating the ledge back to the river, but eventually I return to the cave where the demon is. I touch the amulet to let Ruby know it's time to leave, she does so and quickly takes human form.
Ruby says, "So what's the plan?"
"Wait, let me look around first."
I walk past the pile of rocks and take another look at the block of ice containing the demon. Then I walk all over the ice looking at the rest of the cave and the terrain we will be fighting on.
I also take a close look at the demon; its lower body is that of a very large wolf, while the head would normally be in place, but now it is a human torso covered in fur with a head that looks like a mix of wolf and human.
With four legs, it will probably be very fast, its upper body is also very muscular, so it could be very strong. It's not going to be an easy fight. I walk back towards Ruby as I think of a plan.
Ruby says, "It's so creepy the way his eyes follow you."
"Yeah, I've been trying to ignore it. I think I have the plan figured out."
Ruby says, "Okay, I'm listening."
"I want you on top of these rocks, we'll both hit the ice with fireballs to melt it, I'll be on the opposite side of the cave. When he is free I will get his attention, I want you to use a fire beam to see if the blue flames hurt him, if they do stay up there and hit him until you run out of mana. If they don't then you can use your swords, but be careful I think it will be too fast."
Ruby says, "That's it, that's the best plan you could come up with?"
"Yes, considering I know very little about what skills I might have. We'll have to adapt as we go along, so a complex, convoluted plan is basically useless."
Ruby says, "It would make me feel better."
"Trying to follow a plan might also get us killed."
Ruby says, "Okay, okay, okay, I get it, let's just get this over with."
"Right. Oh yeah, aim high with the fireball, if we burn the remains it'll be pointless."
Ruby says "Got it."
Ruby starts climbing up the pile of rocks and I move to the other side of the room, I move until I can see Ruby behind the ice block. I take one last careful look around to check for anything that might trip me up, then look back to check on Ruby.
When I see she's on top of the pile of rocks I ready my fireball.
Spell. Once the spell is ready, I look at Ruby and see that she has hers.
Ready too, I aim at the top half of the ice block and then nod towards Ruby.
We both throw our fireballs at the ice block. When the flames dissipate, I'm surprised to see that the ice hasn't changed at all.
Ruby yells "What now?"
I salute Ruby and sit down to meditate and take a look around with my inner sight. What I see is a staggering amount of mana swirling inside the ice, no wonder the fireballs had no effect. When I open my eyes, Ruby is sitting across from me.
"There's so much mana in that ice that I don't think anything we can hit it with can scratch it."
Ruby says, "So what do we do?"
"Um, the only thing that comes to mind is that I'm going to have to disenchant the ice."
Ruby says, "Won't that amount of mana kill you?"
"Maybe, if I did it all at once, probably. I need to study it a bit before I do anything."
Ruby says, "I think that's the first smart thing you've said since we first saw that thing."
"Haha. Just protect me while I study this thing."
Ruby says, "Yes, oh wise and mighty master!"
