Shu Yan stopped her motion of picking at the vegetables and couldn’t help but looked over at Hu Ruiyang. Was it that obvious? Even if he had noticed it, he shouldn’t have said it out loud, right? Wouldn’t that just make things awkward?
“Of course I wouldn’t be so blunt at work but I tend to be more so when I am around those I am more familiar with. Speculations will only worsen the misunderstandings. I gather that you don’t like me probably because I was being aggressive when we first met?”
“That’s not true. You are just making things up.” Shu Yan smiled awkwardly.
“Xiao Xue is the only girl in the family and we have always been very protective of her. That made her somewhat simple-minded and was, therefore, fooled by Zhang Baizong. I really was not aware of the matters of Zhang Baizong before. I did know that he had gotten back with the little nanny though. I chose not to tell Xiao Xue because I didn’t think she would be able to handle it. I was infuriated when I found out that someone had told it to her. We did later on realized that Xiao Xue was way less fragile than we had imagined. She was particularly strong and decisive. Everything was all in my head.”
“Wouldn’t it be better if you tell these to Ruixue in person?” asked Shu Yan quizzically.
Hu Ruiyang avoided her question. “I am very curious how a woman who hadn’t even graduated grade school could come up with such an amazing proposal. Nor did you act or talk like a naïve woman from a village.”
“I have always been smart and had been top of my class when I was a child. If my family doesn’t weight boys over girls as much as they do and made me quit school, I would for sure be able to go to college.” Shu Yan knew that sooner or later someone who bring that up. Mainly because she didn’t try too hard to hide it.
That being said, original owner did have good grades in school and had always been the top of her classes in first and second grades.
The corners of Hu Ruiyang’s mouth twitched. There was a total of ten or so students and scoring 70 points in mathematics and literature would put one as the top student in school. Exactly what made her think that she could get into college.
Alright, he would buy it that she was a smart one. There were no other explanations. Unless he was to believe that someone had inspired her in a dream. He was never a superstitious one.
Shu Yan was about done preparing the dishes. She looked at the time and it was already past 10 o’clock. She used her kids as an excuse and went to join them in the gain room. Hu Ruixue woke up at 11 and was baffled when she saw Hu Ruiyang in the living room. “How come you are here, Big Brother?”
“I got a couple bottles of good wine from De so I thought I would bring them over for you,” said Hu Ruiyang as he led her over to look at the two new bottles of red wine that he had placed in her wine cabinet.
“De had returned? When did that happen?”
“That’s right. And he asked about you. He wanted to know when you will have time to get together and grab a bite.”
Hu Ruixue gave Hu Ruiyang a dubious look. “Are you two up to something again?”
“What do you mean by up to something?” said Hu Ruiyang seriously. “We haven’t gotten together for a while so just think that we should set some time aside is all.”
“Okay, good then. I have said it a long time ago that I only think of De as a brother. Don’t even try to set us up. Right now I only want to focus on my career and taking care of Duoduo. Speaking of, have you seen Yanyan when you arrived?” Hu Ruixue really had no intention to get remarried but her mother always come up with different ideas to get her to go on arranged dates.
“Yes, I saw her. We even chatted a little bit. She is playing with her kids in the game room,” said Hu Ruiyang as he lifted his chin.
Hu Ruixue, “Then why are you still sitting here?”
“Whatever do you mean by that? Are you kicking me out?” Hu Ruiyang had never seen anyone treating their guests that way.
Hu Ruixue hrumped lightly. “Stop with that already. This was Yanyan’s first time visiting. Don’t scare her away to a point that she would never want to come again.”
“Fine. I’ll leave. You let Shu Yan know.”
“Byee.” Hu Ruixue waved at him.
Shu Yan noticed that Hu Ruiyang wasn’t there when she walked back out. She took a look in the kitchen direction. He wasn’t there either.
“You don’t need to look anymore. My brother had something else to take care of and had already taken off,” said Hu Ruixue, amused. “Is that necessary? My brother is not some sort of beast.”
“Of course that is necessary. Your brother has strong aura. It’s not something that a pleasant like me can withstand.” Shu Yan felt that she always needed to be on her toes when talking to him. It was very tiring.
Hu Ruixue giggled nonstop from Shu Yan’s words.
