Chapter 23
Chapter 23
C23 – Is It My Fault for Being Handsome
“Isn’t that the case? And yet you can’t identify your foe? What does that make you if not naive?”
A chuckle escaped from Wang Xiao.
Realizing Wang Xiao was referring to the incident on the bus, a blush crept onto Yu Meini’s beautiful face. Guilt swelled inside her, but her pride stopped her from immediately apologizing to him.
“I admit, I was at fault for the bus incident. I apologize. I’ll even take you out for a meal as a gesture of regret!”
Taking a deep breath and swallowing her pride, Yu Meini offered an apology to Wang Xiao.
She discovered Wang Xiao was from the same university. She intended to offer him a meal as a gesture, something she had never done even for the affluent admirers who pursued her.
“There’s no need. I can handle my own meals. Let’s just leave it be.”
Wang Xiao, with a subtle smile, gestured at Yu Meini, then turned and headed towards the Forest City University’s rear entrance.
“Did he just turn me down?”
Shock registered in Yu Meini’s eyes as she stood rooted to the ground, disbelieving.
Many women at Forest City University had approached her for a meal, only to be rebuffed. Today, she had humbled herself to extend an invitation, and yet she was the one declined.
Did she lack allure? It was the first time Yu Meini questioned her own attractiveness, but she quickly dismissed the notion.
As one of Forest City University’s most notable beauties, she never doubted her looks.
“Fine, be that way. I didn’t really want to invite you anyway!”
Watching Wang Xiao’s retreating figure, Yu Meini felt a surge of frustration. She stomped her foot and murmured angrily.
Having let off steam, she continued her way towards Forest City University.
……
The Forest City University boasted a picturesque setting, nestled among mountains and rivers. Its verdant trees and majestic statues of renowned personalities enhanced its beauty. The ambiance carried a distinct aroma reminiscent of books.
Everywhere you looked, you were reminded of the Forest City University’s esteemed reputation as a top-tier institution in the Jiangnan Province.
At that very moment, an attractive young man strolled leisurely down the campus path, pausing occasionally to appreciate the surroundings and expressing his admiration with an audible sigh.
“Amazing! Only in universities do you find such a plethora of beautiful girls.”
Wang Xiao’s gaze was continually drawn to the girls donning checkered shirts and mini-skirts, their fair legs capturing his attention.
It suddenly made sense to him why the elderly often remarked, “When you descend the mountain, seize any opportunity to visit a university. There’s a trove of wonders waiting within.”
Wang Xiao found himself nodding in agreement.
With an ice cream cone in hand, he sauntered through the campus, savoring both his treat and the views. He felt no urgency to register, knowing he had the rest of the afternoon.
“Jiajia, why did we part ways?”
A commotion from the square caught Wang Xiao’s ear. Raising an eyebrow in curiosity, he anticipated a scene unfolding.
Reaching the square, ice cream still in tow, he observed a distraught young man, presumably named Lin Hua, desperately gripping a girl’s hand.
“Lin Hua, our relationship is complicated. We just aren’t a match. It’s best we go our separate ways.”
The girl, identified as Jiajia, replied with a firm shake of her head.
“Jiajia, I worked hard for a year to get into Forest City University, all for the hope of being with you. Please tell me what I did wrong. I promise I’ll rectify it.”
Lin Hua’s plea was evident in his tightened grip on Jiajia’s hand.
“Ah, young love,” Wang Xiao mused to himself, enjoying his ice cream and silently lamenting the scene before him.
Out of the blue, Jiajia’s gaze landed on Wang Xiao. Pointing towards him, she told Lin Hua, “Some things just can’t be transformed at will. For instance, if you had even half of his charm… Perhaps we might still stand a chance.”
“Er…”
Wang Xiao’s eyes lit up in surprise when the girl singled him out. A hint of a smile played at his lips.
He was merely a spectator of the event. Why was he being dragged into this?
Surely, his good looks weren’t a crime!
Overhearing this, the portly man shot Wang Xiao a glance. His gaze briefly clouded with pain before he said to Jiajia, “Jiajia, it’s not my fault I wasn’t born conventionally attractive. Why does this astonish you?”
It was bewildering for him to see the simple girl he had admired in high school transform so drastically after just one year in college.
She had evolved into someone materialistic, obsessed with looks.
“Lin Hua, I apologize. You can’t offer me what I desire. Regardless of your looks, you’re not financially adequate for me.”
Jiajia sighed, looking disappointedly at the stout man known as Lin Hua.
A crowd of students had gathered as spectators. Several girls looked at Lin Hua with contempt, clearly siding with Jiajia’s perspective.
“Jiajia, can we hurry? I’m famished, and the diner’s getting impatient.”
A well-dressed young man approached Jiajia, voicing his impatience.
“Darling, just a moment more.”
Spotting the affluent-looking young man, Jiajia’s face lit up, addressing him affectionately.
“Jiajia, who is this? Why address him so fondly?”
Noticing Jiajia’s demeanor shift upon the man’s arrival, Lin Hua’s face darkened, demanding answers from Jiajia.
“Lin Hua, isn’t it apparent?”
With a hint of exasperation, Jiajia clutched the arm of the affluent man and replied icily to Lin Hua.
Lin Hua staggered backward, his face a picture of disbelief.
He had been toiling academically, hoping to join her in the same university. Who could’ve predicted she’d move on so quickly?
Pity was evident in the eyes of the onlooking students as they observed Lin Hua.
“How long have the two of you been together?”
With a tense grip and a steely gaze, Lin Hua questioned Jiajia.
“The third week of the first year…”
Jia Jia gently tilted her head, speaking in a feeble voice.
Upon hearing this, Lin Hua’s expression darkened instantly. He looked intently at Jia Jia, questioning, “If you’ve been with him since the third week after our first year, why not tell me outright?”
“Ah, so you’re the backup Jia Jia mentioned, huh? We appreciate the 600 yuan you send monthly. It may not be a lot, but it suffices for meals and a night’s stay.”
Before Jia Jia could respond, the affluent young man beside her smirked, addressing Lin Hua.
Swoosh…
The students around them erupted into whispers the moment those words were uttered.
“That poor guy is truly tragic. He’s been sidelined for a year by a girl, and he even sends her money monthly.”
“Worse, the money he provides is used by another man for private time with her…”
Many of the male students gazed at Lin Hua, their eyes reflecting pity and sympathy.
“Wh, what!”
Hearing these words, Lin Hua shuddered. He lifted his gaze to Jia Jia, a girl he had cherished for four years, hoping to decipher her feelings. Her evasion of his gaze made things clear.
He had been giving her his monthly allowance for the past year, enduring a bare minimum lifestyle, just to ensure she didn’t go without.
Only to find out that another had been using his hard-earned money to enjoy time with her?
“You sent that money of your own accord. I never demanded it.”
Jia Jia finally asserted, her voice firm as she met Lin Hua’s gaze.
Boom…
These words felt like a crushing blow to Lin Hua’s already fragile heart.
“Enough, chubby. My girlfriend has spelled it out for you. Don’t bother her anymore. If you do, I won’t hold back. Leave now!”
The wealthy young man then chipped in with a haughty tone, looking at Lin Hua with clear scorn.
“Fuck off!”
Lin Hua’s eyes were bloodshot. He clenched his fists tightly. His swollen body rushed towards the Rich Young Master, as if he was going to fight the Rich Young Master to the death.
“Humph, you overestimate yourself!”
When the Rich Young Master saw Lin Hua lunging at him, he sneered. He kicked Lin Hua in the abdomen and sent him flying.
Lin Hua fell in front of Wang Xiao. He spat out a mouthful of bile, but the anger on his face didn’t disappear. His eyes were bloodshot. He struggled to get up from the ground and roared, “I will kill you, I will kill you!”
Wang Xiao saw this and couldn’t help shaking his head. This fatty’s physique was swollen and weak. He didn’t even have a few pounds of meat. How could he beat Lin Hua?
“Damn fatty, don’t refuse a toast and drink a forfeit. Kneel down and kowtow to me three times. I will let you go!”
That Rich Young Master arrogantly looked at Lin Hua and coldly snorted.
“Fuck you, kneel down? If you have the guts, kill me!”
Lin Hua clenched his fist and roared at Rich Young Master.
“Since you want to die, don’t blame me. Attack!”
Rich Young Master’s face darkened when he heard this, and he said in a cold tone.
As soon as his voice faded, a few of his underlings rushed out from the crowd and pounced towards Lin Hua.
When the surrounding students saw this scene, they were so scared that they hid to the side, fearing that it would affect them.
Seeing that Rich Young Master had so many underlings, Lin Hua’s face was filled with anger. He wasn’t afraid and was ready to fight with Rich Young Master to the death.
But at this moment, a hand was placed on his shoulder, stopping him.
“You don’t want your life anymore?”
Wang Xiao smiled faintly at Lin Hua and said.
“How can I not take revenge for my wife?”
Lin Hua clenched his fists, his eyes were bloodshot, and he said while gnashing his teeth in anger.
Hearing this, Wang Xiao smiled faintly. His next sentence instantly reduced Lin Hua’s anger by 70%.
“A whore who was played by someone for a year, is she also considered a wife? At most, she can be considered as a prostitute. She doesn’t even deserve to be a prostitute.”
