Chapter 19: This Damned Charm

It was the morning of the first day of the new school term.
“Son, school’s starting today! Don’t forget what I told you.”
Father Wang instructed, “Don’t compare soul pets with others. Just train your own. Don’t envy those rare ones.”
“If this little one performs poorly, don’t be disappointed.
“Come to think of it, it has grown so much in just half a month. Green caterpillars are so easy to raise.”
Father Wang looked at the green caterpillar behind Wang Che and sighed.
Father Wang and Mother Wang didn’t know much about soul pets and had already forgotten about what they had learned in school.
They only felt that it grew faster than the average rate, but not too quickly as well.
After all, it was a worm.
“Alright.”
Wang Che nodded and turned to the bug, “Let’s go to school now. If we encounter other soul pets, be friendly. Don’t compare yourself to them during the entrance exam.
“Got it?”
“Hiss!” The green caterpillar also replied obediently.
“You talk too much,” snapped Mother Wang as she stuffed a piece of bread into Father Wang’s mouth, snorting. “I asked the son of one of my colleagues, Auntie Li, who is also in the second semester of his senior year. He said that green caterpillars can’t grow so rapidly. I think this is no ordinary green caterpillar.”
“Not only that, our son has trained it well. Look, it appears to be more powerful than before. If there was a tattoo on its forehead, it would look even more imposing than a tiger! It’s not inferior to those rare soul pets at all!”
“Wife, a tiger is not the only one with stripes on its forehead, so does a tortoise…” muttered Father Wang.
“It looks like I will have to loosen your joints today!”
“Eh… Wait, it’s a tiger, definitely a tiger!”
Crackle…
There was a clatter.
Wang Che glanced at them. They had been married for decades, but they could still bicker like this.
He took his soul pet and walked out. He looked at the blue sky and felt good.
“Let’s go to Skyheart City’s First High.”
Skyheart City’s First High. One of the three major high schools in Skyheart City.
Students and parents came and went from the school.
Among them, the first and second-year students stared at the seniors with envy and desire.
They looked at the cool, cute, and beautiful soul pets around them.
Without awakening a martial soul, a soul pet could only follow its master.
If they awakened their martial soul, a Contract Soul Master could create a soul ring, and due to the life contract, the soul ring would form a unique soul realm.
The soul pet would then be able to enter the soul realm within the soul ring to rest and cultivate.
It would not need to follow the Contract Soul Master constantly, and would not take up so much space.
Only in the third year could one see an overwhelming number of soul pets following their masters.
Wang Che stood in front of the majestic school.
For a moment, he felt slightly ridiculous.
It was as if he had just stepped onto the path of cultivation and seen the Immortal Sect.
He shook his head and smiled.
He perked up and thought to himself.
‘Ahem, although I’ve lived for a long time, I’m still young in this timeline.’
With the green caterpillar behind him, Wang Che strode in.
There were many students with their soul pets.
In terms of size, there were a number of them that had an even larger build compared to the green caterpillar.
For example, the Ancient Tree Spiritual Knight.
In terms of cuteness, there were cats that were even more adorable than the green caterpillar. They had a black coat of fur and were as big as a teapot.
The level of power among the soul pets was far greater as well.
There were not many third-year students in First High, only about 360 of them.
Almost everyone had a soul pet.
The green caterpillar was too inconspicuous here. It looked way too ordinary.
“Wang Che! Eh, why is your green caterpillar so big?”
Xu Haifeng’s voice came from behind.
He was hugging a bun-like soul pet and excitedly ran over.
As he got closer, he realized that there was a green caterpillar the size of a puppy behind Wang Che.
He was taken aback.
“Is this the Hundred Flowers Beast?” asked Wang Che as he turned around and smiled at his friend.
The soul pet in Xu Haifeng’s arms resembled a cute bun. Its body was a shade of light green, and at the top of its head was a flower bud that looked like an antenna. On the side were two short, round hands and underneath were two short, rabbit-like legs.
There were a pair of eyes in the center of the ball-like creature, shut in slumber.
Its appearance was unique indeed.
Hundred Flower Beast. A type of soul pet that was extremely cute in the early stages and would go on to develop attractive looks in the later phases. It wasn’t weak either.
It was loved by many young men and women.
Xu Haifeng’s Hundred Flowers Beast was not very big in size. He held it in his arms as if he was hugging a basketball.
However, he had also given it a pinkish-white coat.
There was a bow tied on the head too.
“Are you… trying to raise a doll?”
Wang Che sputtered.
“What? Isn’t it pretty?” Xu Haifeng chuckled.
Wang Che stared at him.
This man who stood 1.8 meters tall was only half an inch shorter than him. He had a buzz cut, and his facial features were alright. There was a hint of roguishness between his brows.
It was indeed a manly thing to do.
“What a sight,” Wang Che quipped.
“Hey, what do you even know?” Xu Haifeng whispered. “It’s so cute. Such a dainty Hundred Flowers Beast will attract many pretty girls in the future.”
“…”
Wang Che was speechless.
“So, this is the reason why you chose the Hundred Flowers Beast?” Wang Che asked, glancing at him.
“That’s only one of the few reasons,” assured Xu Haifeng as he smiled again. “The main reason is that it’s just too beautiful. I’ll just treat it as if I’m raising a daughter. Come on child, wake up and meet him.”
The Hundred Flowers Beast opened its eyes in a daze. It first looked at Xu Haifeng, then at Wang Che.
Swoosh!
It let out a soft cry and extended a hand as short as a wick toward Wang Che.
It wanted him to hug it.
“F*ck, you don’t want me anymore?” Xu Haifeng gasped as he continued. “Wang Che, scram off. Your damn charm can even affect soul pets! I’m seriously about to vomit!”
Wang Che kept silent yet again.
“Ssss!”
The green caterpillar suddenly called out to him.
“Huh?” He turned and gazed at it. “You want to wear clothes too? You have thick skin, so you don’t have to.”
The green caterpillar glared at him sideways.
“Speaking of which, my Hundred Flowers Beast already has 16 years of soul power cultivation.”
Xu Haifeng lowered his voice and was rather pleased with himself as he added, “Yesterday, I saw that the students in class were all trash. They didn’t even manage to enlighten their soul pets.”
“I’m going to show off my abilities during the soul power cultivation test later!”
Wang Che smiled but did not say anything.
The two of them talked as they entered the school.
The campus was surrounded by lush, timeworn trees. The school building was painted blue and white, its road wide and sturdy, enough to accomodate the movements of any young soul pet.
The most special segment, however, was the field.
It was incredibly large, with various tools for training young soul pets. The top was covered by a faint membrane used to block the wind and rain from getting into the field.
Studying in this school naturally meant learning how to train soul pets.
If one wished for additional training, they could only go to clubs located outside of the school compound.
All sorts of equipment here were free to be used for teaching students and training their soul pets, but they were only available on schooling days.
There would be a test in the second semester of their third year.
Of course, they wouldn’t test the soul pet’s stats so strictly.
After all, they had only just started cultivating them.
In the beginning, most lessons involved training in strength, speed, physique, and so on.
The first test would be a simple one of soul power cultivation alone, because it was the foundation.
Normally, if one wanted to assess the soul power cultivation of a soul pet, they could roughly judge based on the soul pet’s size, characteristics, appearance, and other factors.
However, it was difficult to determine accurately.
If one signed a life soul pact, the Contract Soul Master would automatically sense their own soul pet’s soul power cultivation.
The reason for this was because for every year gained, a faint golden light would emanate from the soul pet’s body.
It would be obvious.
The school wanted to carry out this examination mainly to know how many students had hatched and cultivated over the winter break.
The location of the test was not held in the classrooms anymore, as most classes for third-years were held on the field.
After all, soul pets ranged from a variety of sizes.. The normal classrooms couldn’t hold so many of them.
