Chapter 8

C8 – Magic Sharing

Wen Huaimu meandered through several streets until he reached a rather rundown one, where he entered a modest eatery.

The place was named Lemon Restaurant, a cozy establishment with just two floors. Its unpretentious interior was a clear sign of its small scale.

As Wen Huaimu stepped inside, he found the restaurant unusually quiet for noon. The lunch crowd typically didn’t start trickling in until after 1:30 pm.

“You’re here,” greeted a warm, middle-aged woman with a friendly face.

She was the sole staff member at Lemon Restaurant, known affectionately as Big Sister He, a neighbor from Wen Huaimu’s own community. Despite her financial hardships, she had been employed by Wen Huaimu’s family for several years.

Wen Huaimu returned her greeting with a smile, “Hello, Auntie He.”

“Come over and lend a hand,” called out Ai Shayu, who was busy moving wine boxes, upon spotting Wen Huaimu.

With a quick smile at Big Sister He, Wen Huaimu hurried over to assist.

Once the work was done, Ai Shayu served up a hearty lunch. Without hesitation, Wen Huaimu took the bowl of noodles to his father’s office and dug in.

Meanwhile, the little elfin inside the molding ring watched on, salivating. Ai Shayu had prepared a simple yet aromatic meal of two dishes and a soup for Wen Huaimu, showcasing her commendable culinary skills that could stir anyone’s appetite.

The elfin, having been born less than a day ago, had never encountered such enticing aromas. Her drool was inevitable.

The sight amused Wen Huaimu. He had been eating his mother’s version of a “nutritious fast food” for over a decade, and it had long lost its appeal to him.

Nonetheless, seeing the elfin’s eagerness, Wen Huaimu discreetly split half of his meal and placed it into the molding space.

The elfin let out a cry of delight and eagerly devoured the feast before her, exclaiming between bites, “So tasty, so tasty! This dish is absolutely wonderful.”

Wen Huaimu watched, utterly astounded and at a loss for words.

After finishing lunch, Wen Huaimu left the Lemon restaurant with a contented elfin in tow, eager to leave quickly.

The prospect of using magic, something straight out of legend, thrilled Wen Huaimu. He was abuzz with excitement at the thought of casting spells, even if it was just a Water Lubricant Skill that might not work perfectly.

Wen Huaimu arrived at a long-deserted factory, a place where few ever ventured, making it an ideal spot to practice magic.

“Diaochan, how do I go about borrowing magic from you?” Wen Huaimu asked, his face alight with anticipation.

Diaochan, engrossed in savoring her ice cream, responded without looking up, “Just follow the ancient gods’ rules, establish a blood pact with me, and we can begin sharing magic.”

“Is it really that simple?” Wen Huaimu was momentarily taken aback, but his excitement quickly surged as he focused his mind and silently recited the incantation the elfin had given him.

“By the ancient gods’ decree, let the magic of the blood pact be shared.”

No sooner had he finished the incantation than Wen Huaimu felt a sharp pain in his head. His senses seemed to extend beyond his body, connecting him with the world around him.

Simultaneously, warmth spread from the molding ring on his finger, infusing his body with a strange sensation.

“What’s happening?” Wen Huaimu looked down at his own body, which stood with eyes closed, feeling bewildered.

“You’ve managed to share eighty percent of the magic power! That’s incredible,” the elfin exclaimed, her ice cream forgotten as she looked up in astonishment.

“Eighty percent?” Wen Huaimu was struggling to grasp the concept.

“Dopey brother, it means you can use eighty percent of my magic power. But can you also project your Devil Spirit?” The elfin’s surprise turned to a stunned expression.

“Devil Spirit? What’s that?” Wen Huaimu was still anxious about his out-of-body experience. But the elfin seemed to understand his predicament and he quickly pressed her for answers.

“It’s what you’re experiencing now. Your spirit is projecting outside your body, allowing you to absorb spiritual power more efficiently and transform it into magic,” the elfin explained, her face tinged with envy.

“So this is what it’s like to have a Devil Spirit emerge!” Wen Huaimu was no longer scared, realizing it was actually a good thing.

“However, since this is your first time, you shouldn’t let your Devil Spirit stay outside your body for too long, or it might dissipate,” the elfin warned.

“What happens if the Devil Spirit dissipates?” Wen Huaimu asked, puzzled.

“If your Devil Spirit dissipates, you’ll turn into a fool,” the elfin said with a mischievous laugh.

“Ah!” Wen Huaimu was startled and quickly drew his Devil Spirit back toward his body. He experienced a moment of darkness before regaining control. Exhaling a sigh of relief, he murmured, “That was close!”

“You’re such a scaredy-cat. There are enchanters out there who would do anything to release their Devil Spirit, and yet they can’t manage it. And here you are calling it dangerous,” the elfin remarked, her face a mix of envy and scorn.

“Is it really that hard? It seemed pretty easy to me; my Devil Spirit came out just like that,” Wen Huaimu said, oblivious to the impact of his words.

The elfin, clearly miffed, explained, “Manifesting a Devil Spirit is a special gift. If an enchanter is born with strong psychic force, they can form a Devil Spirit the very first time they encounter magic. During their training, their magic can become two to three times more powerful. There’s another way, but it’s much rarer. An enchanter could reach a high level of mastery through sheer effort and then try to force the spirit to emerge. But that’s incredibly risky. One misstep, and the enchanter could end up a fool or be consumed by the magic. They could be reduced to ashes, their souls obliterated.”

“That sounds terrifying!” Wen Huaimu exclaimed, then brightened, “Does that mean a lot of people will envy me?”

“Absolutely, I envy you myself. We elfin may have strong psychic force innately, but we’re just shy of being able to form a Devil Spirit, so it’s not something we possess naturally,” the elfin said, her expression one of pure envy.

Wen Huaimu suddenly felt a surge of pride, realizing he had an advantage over the elfin. He patted his chest confidently and declared, “No worries, I’ll take good care of you from now on. Nobody will dare to mess with you.”

“You’re so kind.” The elfin’s face lit up with a smile as her envy melted away, radiating pure joy.

“But I’m not that envious of you, you know, because we’ve already forged a blood pact. So, as you advance quickly in your training, I’ll be leveling up just as fast,” the elfin playfully remarked.

“Is that so? That’s fantastic!” Wen Huaimu burst into delighted laughter.

“Absolutely. Just keep up your diligent cultivation, and I’ll soon be an intermediate elfin. I’m really aspiring to be the Elf Queen,” the elfin said, her expression a mix of innocence and determination.

“Rest assured, your dream will certainly come true,” Wen Huaimu assured her.

“Halt, halt, or I’ll shoot!”

Just then, a frantic shout echoed from outside the factory, followed by two figures bursting in.

Wen Huaimu was taken aback, still trying to make sense of the situation when he heard an excited cry, “Ah, what luck! I’ve even managed to snag a hostage!”
