Chapter 167 Trying To Make Things Work (2)

?Chaerin Atticus waited for Lukas to return.

She waited, and waited and then waited some more.

She knew that it was probably not the best choice for her to stay with the Atticus family in Nyx city for a night… but the reason why that wasn't the best choice was because of Lily.

"Are you alright, dear?" Charlotte, her grandmother asked. "You haven't touched your blood soup yet, and it's getting cold."

"Ah, it's alright…" Chaerin uneasily said as she held her spoon and stirred it slowly against the bowl.

The only reason why this was a bad idea was because Lukas wanted to save Lily.

And though she and Lily were both of his girlfriends, somehow Lily took precedence over her.

"I mean, it's because she's gravely ill." Chaerin scolded herself silently. There was no use comparing someone who was perfectly healthy and someone who was in her death's bed.

However, that didn't mean that Chaerin was supposed to accept that she was placed second in his priorities right?

It was why Chaerin was surprised and also happy to know that Lukas wanted to let the others know that she and him were going to stay overnight here with the Atticus family.

This was Lukas's own way of showing that he cared and also prioritized what Chaerin wanted, even though she didn't say it aloud.

"Who's ill?" Charlotte asked.

"Grandma, it's rude to ask questions." Junia whispered.

"Ah, the reason why I left Lux wasn't because of visiting Junia alone or anything like that." Chaerin explained. Since she had told it to Chelsea, it only felt right to tell this to the others too. "But one of… one of the people that I know became gravely ill and we need to obtain something to heal her."

"Oh dear, is it not something that bringing her here would help?" Chaerin's uncle furrowed his brows. "The hospitals here in Nyx might be a little better than Lux's, no offense to your city."

"I'm afraid not." Chaerin smiled tiredly. "It's kind of a time of the essence mission, the longer that we delay things… the more complicated things could become, so I really shouldn't have stayed here, but Lukas said it was alright."

"It does sound really important," Junia quietly said. "But we're glad that you're here."

"And do you really need to come with them in the first place, honey?" Chaerin's aunt asked. "Time essence and all that. Sounds like something a few can do by themselves, maybe you don't necessarily have to join them?"

"Not now, that's a bad question to ask." Charlotte scowled at her daughter-in-law. "There's a reason why this girl chose to accompany this group and we shouldn't ask her to abandon such an important thing just because we'd like to have her around."

"…You'd like to have me around?" Chaerin blinked.

"Well, as far as I can see, my family has warmed up immediately to you." Charlotte said with a smile. "And you're a sweet and nice gal. Why wouldn't we not like to have you around?"

Chaerin's cheeks grew warm, and she didn't think that she'd be able to feel this way after such a long time. The thought was gratifying, but her priorities were still the same.

Since Lukas wanted to save Lily, and since Lily really didn't deserve to die… Chaerin was onboard with the plan. She didn't want to leave Lukas's side at all.

A knock suddenly interrupted her train of thoughts.

"Lukas?" Chaerin immediately brightened up, and stood up from her chair.

Charlotte laughed a little. "Ah, now that's something inseparable."

Chaerin blushed and excused herself, making her way back to the door.

***

Lukas knocked on the door and waited for a couple of seconds.

He didn't think that he'd get exhausted, but comparing it with everything he had done for the past weeks… which was close to nothing, this was actually quite a strenuous feat.

Anyhow, Lukas was gonna let Chaerin know about the Aurelius, and the Carmilla, and if she wanted to stay with her family then she was free to stay with them and he'd take care of things from there.

"Am I going to run back and find the Carmilla House again? Hell yeah, I am." Lukas sighed and brushed the sweat off his forehead, waiting again.

Nobody opened the door.

Lukas blinked and didn't think that it would take this long. He knocked again, a bit louder this time. Still no response.

"What happened?" Lukas took a deep breath and tried to catch his breath. Rhea who floated beside of him rolled her eyes, but simply phased through the door and then poked her head out.

"They're not here."

"What do you mean?" Lukas looked at her alarmed.

"I mean, nobody's there. Not a single soul, nada."

"That's not…" Lukas blubbered. "Where would they even go? Chaerin and her entire family just disappeared?"

"Are you going to panic?" Rhea tilted her head.

"No, there has to be a reason for it… the city is safe. This place is a Vampire sanctuary, so yeah? Maybe they just went out?" Lukas tapped his foot uncertainly outside of the door. "Did Chaerin try and find me on her own? But why would everyone be gone if that was the case? Surely, the family should have stayed…"

Lukas glanced left and right at the other units in the building and sighed. It was something that he had never done before back in his time as a human, but out of everything that he'd done as a Vampire, this was probably the most strangest one yet.

Lukas knocked at the Atticus family's neighbor and waited.

Finally, someone opened the door and gave him an odd look.

"You're not the delivery guy." The young teenage Vampire said with a frown.

"I'm not, but I'm actually from next door." Lukas faked a grin, not exactly feeling the need to act happy or friendly. "Do you know where the people here went to? Heard anything happen?"

"Shouldn't you know if you're from there?" the Vampire crossed his arms.

Lukas' grin faltered slightly, and one of his eye's twitched.
