“Excuse me,” requested the nurse softly behind Lu Zhaoyang. She backed away as the nurse brought a set of needles. There was a sharp smell of rubbing alcohol before she watched the nurse giving her fainted mother an injection. “Thank you,” mumbled the nurse as she exited with the doctor. She decided to head for a walk and there she saw her man leaning against the wall. She almost forgot they were in public, that she nearly plunged herself into his embrace.
He pulled her close, “Do it. You need it.”
“I’m fine.” She turned and rested against the freezing wall with her head staying as low as her mood.
“The doctor just told us that even if my mother wakes up, she will never be as healthy as before. Not only that, she will never get pregnant again.” She had no idea why she told the devil all this but her heart urged her to pour her feelings out to somebody trustworthy.
“Will she never wake up?” Tears knotted her nose.
“Don’t worry. She will wake up. I mean, it’s hard to get an easy life like this. She hasn’t had enough being the wife of a wealthy family.” Huo Yunting was trying to comfort her but it seemed like his sarcasm was hardwired in his brain.
“Can I have a moment without your satire? As if things have not gotten worse!” She glared at him and walked away.
“Where are you going?” He reached out with his hand.
“To your father’s mansion.” She planned to pack a few daily necessities for her mother.
“I’ll drive!”
“No.”
On their way home, Lu Zhaoyang had hardly said a word on her seat. The same was with Huo Yunting who could feel the scratches from his fearsome wife just now. It was a chore to get her to the car. She insisted dialing for a Uber when she got a driver.
“Ridiculous,” muttered the man.
Once the car stopped by the mansion, she stormed into the house without even a ‘thank you’.
The bloody sofa had been replaced and the old lady was nowhere to be found in the living room. Zhaoyang headed upstairs straight to pick a few clothes, all into a mini suitcase for her mother. She dragged the suitcase downstairs before she was stopped by her man who was smoking at the porch. It was the same mesmerizing sight she saw in his office months ago.
The same choking too, ugh.
She frowned thinking so.
“You should really cut on smoking. It’s unhealthy.”
“Alright then.” He then tossed the cigarette to the ground before stepping on it. He wanted to take the suitcase from her but she pushed him away, “I know what you’re thinking. You don’t have to send me back. We have our own driver.”
“Well, you meant *I* have *my* own driver. You can go and have a try. See if any of *my* drivers listen to you.” He snatched the suitcase away, “It’s just a few minutes drive away from the house. Do you have to carry this?” He brandished the suitcase, “People are going to think you’re heading for vacation.”
“...” The girl was speechless and decided to give in.
It’s always better to get prepared for the worst.
Thought Zhaoyang in the car.
Huo Yunting dropped her at the hospital and sped away after that.
Huo Zhenning left the ward right after she came. There were a lot of unsettled business at the company.
She sat down and looked at her mother sympathetically as her hand reached for her mother’s pale fingers in the blanket. Her mother’s eyes remained closed and her face remained cold. Nothing had changed.
It would be New Year’s Eve tomorrow—Nobody in the family ever imagined they would spend their New Year’s Eve like this.
Huo Zhenning came later that night but it was only a brief visit before he walked out of the ward, sighing.
Lu Zhaoyang felt her heart wrenched seeing her mother remaining still in the bed the second morning. Huo Zhenning soon came after breakfast but he just sat across the sofa in the private ward, reading his newspaper.
In the midst of silence, a knock on the door rang.
“Come in,” responded Huo Zhenning behind the newspaper.
It was the doctor with a stack of reports in his hand, “Mr. Huo, the results are in.”
Zhaoyang lifted her head and looked into the doctor’s eyes.
