It was not until the evening that Lu Zhaoyang woke up. Perhaps the anesthetic had lapsed; the first thing she felt was pain as if she had bone fracture all over her body.
She opened her eyes but still could not see. Lu Zhaoyang could not help but tremble, knowing that it was not a dream.
“Huo Yunting, are you here?” She called out in a whisper with a hint of eagerness.
Huo Yunting put down his notebook, turned to look at her and got to his feet. “Are you hungry?”
“I am not hungry. I just want to call your name.”
She just wanted to know that Huo Yunting was here.
Huo Yunting said nothing.
Lu Zhoayang still laid on her side, facing him. “Are you busy?”
She could hear him typing on the keyboard.
“It is fine.”
Huo Yunting stood at the bedside and tidied her quilt.
She suddenly reached out to hold his wrist. “Huo Yunting...”
He tensed up and quietly waited for her to continue.
But after a long while, she still did not say anything.
It was not until Huo Li sent in their dinner that Lu Zhaoyang let go of his wrist.
She just wanted to feel that sense of security, which only Huo Yunting could give.
Huo Li was silent all the while as he was afraid that the more he talked, the more mistakes he would make and agitate his brother’s wife. He put things down and left.
Lu Zhaoyang sat up from the bed and suddenly realized that she had not done something important yet.
“Huo Yunting, where is my cell phone?” She reached out to Huo Yunting. “I have not taken leave yet.”
“Your cell phone was damaged during the accident.”
Huo Yunting took the dinner to the small dining table on her bed. He wondered why she was still worried about things like that when she was already in such a condition. This woman must have hit her head.
“I forgot. What use there is to have a phone when I cannot see,” Lu Zhoayang said in a whisper with a smile but her eyes were filled with endless despair.
The so-called calmness was only an illusion.
Huo Yunting sat down at the bedside, holding her hand that was clenched into a fist in his cold palm.
Lu Zhaoyang would recover her eyesight when she found suitable corneas. It was just that the right organ was yet available.
“Open your mouth.”
Huo Yunting held her hand in one hand and took a spoonful of chicken soup in one hand and sent it to her mouth.
She took a few mouthfuls and stopped.
Huo Yunting had a hard time describing his feelings.
Knowing that she was the one killing his mother, he wondered why he could not take up the courage to question her.
Why did he feel so sad looking at her?
Why was he not willing to set things straight?
Closing and opening his eyes, Huo Yunting came out of his thoughts and scooped a spoonful of soup.
“Drink some more. You have only lost your eyesight; not half of your stomach.”
“I would rather have half the stomach gone than not being able to see.”
Lu Zhaoyang shook her head and lay back down with a forced smile. She pulled the quilt over herself.
Huo Yunting looked at her curling up under the quilt and lost his appetite too. He picked up his notebook and typed on it again.
There was silence for a long moment. Lu Zhaoyang silently whipped open her quilt.
“Are you not eating?”
“No appetite.” Huo Yunting stared at the screen and continued typing. “I have sent your boss a resignation email on your behalf.”
“What? Resignation?”
She whipped open her quilt and bounced up, her hands groping in the air but could not reach him.
Was he sitting far away?
But she just felt that he was close by.
Huo Yunting looked at her; she almost touched him, but her little hands had missed and moved to another direction.
