Chapter 601: There's Actually Strategy Involved
"You'll pay for looking down on me like that! Go slave number three, slave number one!! Show that stupid Wrunch your dedication to me!!"
"Yes Mistress!!"
"I'm slave number one!!!"
"Hahaha! Go and show them what you're made of, Wruncher!! Kick their asses!!"
"Wraaaagghh!!"
What the fuck am I even watching…
The two Mahun slaves charged towards the Wrunch slave, one of them heading directly for him while the other attempted to flank from the side.
For the Mahuns side, one of them was using a sword and shield while the other was using a double bladed axe. As for the Wrunch, he was using dual wielding two axes the same size as the double bladed axe the Mahun was using.
The fight looks like it's going to be a normal real time fight instead of them taking turns at least… If they were actually going to take turns to hit each other, I would have flipped.
I'm guessing this was sort of like a tag team battle except the numbers aren't fixed or something?
The Wrunch clashed against the Mahun with the shield, the Mahun raising his shield to receive the shoulder charge from the bigger opponent.
To his credit, he wasn't sent flying like I thought he would but only skidded a metre back while maintaining his stance.
His partner raised his double bladed axe and tried to bring it down on the Wrunch but he simply swung one of his axes to smack the weapon aside.
The Wrunch then twisted his hand and swung the axe back towards the axe wielding Mahun in an attempt to cleave him into two.
The Mahun slave jumped back to avoid it, the blade narrowly missing him by a few inches and crashing into the ground where he had been moments earlier.
The other Mahun slave charged towards the Wrunch, his shield still raised which was blocking the Wrunch's line of sight and hid the sword that he was preparing to stab him with.
He must have seen through the ruse because the Wrunch immediately swung his other axe to smash into the shield, the force of the blow causing the Mahun to stumble away to the side.
However, that attack caused the Wrunch to turn his back against the second Mahun slave, an opportunity that he was not letting go.
He leapt towards the Wrunch with his axe raised into the air and it looked like he would be able to score a hit when a [Static Bolt] came flying from outside the arena and blasted him in the side.
As though the Wrunch had already anticipated that to happen, he swung back around and cleaved the paralysed Mahun with one of his axes. That blow would have cut the Mahun into two but the slave was teleported outside the arena the moment the axe hit him in the side, which I guess meant that he was now defeated.
"Hahaha! Didn't even react to that, did you, Taritia?!" Bjorn laughed, his palm still pointed at the arena from when he shot the spell.
I then noticed the announcer flipping over a card that replaced the number six with a five on Bjorn's side of the arena.
So that's what they meant by support? The trainers are allowed to cast six spells in total to help their combat slaves during the fight or something?
Taritia didn't react to his taunts since the fight still seemed to be continuing as the shielded Mahun charged towards the Wrunch.
The Wrunch made a snort at his opponent's efforts and raised his arm to bring it down on the Mahun.
"[Strength]!!" Taritia shouted suddenly, her magic enveloping the Mahun with a dull glow.
The Mahun deftly sidestepped the blow and leapt towards the Wrunch with a sudden burst of speed, thrusting his sword out to stab him in the head.
The sword made contact with the Wrunch and he was teleported outside the arena, the Mahun landing in a crouch before raising his sword into the air.
"I am slave number one!!!"
…
I'm kind of wondering just how that woman trains her slaves? Are they actually ok? And are all the slaves in her shop like this?
Katsuki leaned over from my side as though reading my mind, "Mistress. Some of these slave trainers specifically only train their slaves to participate in these exhibitions. They will then sell off those slaves afterwards. These types of slave trainers usually don't have a shop where they sell their slaves at."
"Eh? Then how do they even earn a living?"
"That's not their primary work, Mistress, it's more like their hobby."
"Mmm… I see… You don't happen to know the rules of this exhibition do you?"
Surprisingly, it was Delmare who was sitting in front of me who turned around to smile sheepishly, "I do, Ast… Umm… Mistress."
I tilted my head at her, "How do you know?"
She then discreetly pointed to the side, "There's someone that's new over there and their friend was explaining the exhibition to him. I kind of overheard their conversation…"
Oh wow, she managed to listen in on their conversation through all the shouting and cheering around us? I didn't know her hearing was that good.
I then leaned forward, "So what are the rules?"
"Umm… So they first decide who would start and the person who starts gets to choose what is the maximum number of slaves that can enter the arena for the first round. So since Taritia chose two, that means Bjorn can choose either to send up to two slaves for the first round."
"I see… And the support number?"
"Ah, the second person would get to choose the number of times they can support the slaves in the arena through picking out a number from a box. The support can take any form such as casting spells like we've seen or even giving them a potion or weapon. Basically anything the trainer does to directly interfere with the fight.
They would also be able to use up their support to bring back a slave that has been defeated before to return back to the fight but that would deduct two points off the number of support they have."
Interesting…
"So I assume that once one side runs out of support and combat slaves, the other side will win?"
"That's correct, Mistress."
I then noticed that Bjorn had called in a male Meslatar combat slave to replace the Wrunch he had lost.
"Erm… So what's going on over there now?"
Delmare paused and she glanced to the side for a moment before turning to me, "Umm… The winner or winners of that round will remain on the stage and the one who lost gets to pick the number of slaves to send out in the next fight… Had Taritia's two slaves survived, one of them would have to leave the stage since Bjorn only sent out one.
For this case, the slave that had won the last round would have to fight the new slave that has taken the Wrunch's place."
Ah… I get it… So there's also some strategy involved in choosing who would fight in each round.
I'm guessing Bjorn was counting on at least taking out one of Taritia's slaves in the first round so that he could send in a new slave to take on the winded winner from the first round with ease.
And sure enough, the fight had only begun for a few seconds before the Meslatar slave cut down the Mahun slave with his longsword, ending the second round with Bjorn's victory without breaking a sweat.
Now even if Taritia sends out a new slave, both of them would be fresh and she would be down two slaves while Bjorn only lost one.
Both sides seem to be saving their support though, since neither Taritia nor Bjorn used anything in the second fight and they have not chosen to bring back the defeated slaves either.
Here I thought that this exhibition would just be a simple fight between the combat slaves, I was not expecting there to be layers of strategy involved in this…
"What's stopping anyone from just sending out all five slaves at the same time though?" I asked.
Delmare scratched her cheek, "Umm… I'm actually not sure about that… But I believe that there actually isn't really anything stopping them from doing so if they want to."
Hmm… In that case, I'm wondering if that would be the smart option for me to do later since the girls are used to fighting together already?
But that's also assuming that I am the one who gets to pick the number of people that would be fighting in that round of course.
Just as I was thinking about that, Taritia suddenly let out a shout from her side of the arena.
"I bring back slave number slave number one with my support and send him out again!"
The number on her side that indicated the number of support she had remaining dropped to three and the same slave that was defeated by the Meslatar on the stage leapt back in.
Why the hell would she send in a slave that was just defeated again?
